BUSINESS groups and third level institutions in Kerry have welcomed the news this morning of Astellas Pharma Ireland’s plans for a new €330m facility in Tralee.

A statement from Munster Technology University expressed delight that it would be located in Kerry Technology Park adjacent to the North Campus.

“This significant addition to the area is immense and will help to further establish Kerry as a centre of excellence in STEM. This investment, together with the current construction of the €30 million STEM Building at MTU Kerry North Campus, provides a very bright future for STEM education and careers in Kerry, bringing specialised engineering, science and technology roles to the southwest region,” read the statement.

“Astellas and MTU have a long history of engagement and collaboration and we look forward to continuing that relationship. This new facility, along with the established facility in Killorglin will provide future excellent student internships, work placements, project work and graduate opportunities,” the statement continued.

Tralee Chamber also welcomed the news. CEO Colette O’Connor said; “This announcement is a significant and welcome boost for the Tralee region, promising increased economic activity that will benefit the local economy. Astellas has recognised the high quality talent pool that Tralee and the surrounding Kerry area offers and today’s welcome announcement provides further employment opportunities.”

The news was also warmly welcomed by Killarney Chamber where it was described as “the sporting equivalent of Kerry winning the All-Ireland in football”.

Wholeheartedly welcoming the news, the Killarney business organisation said as the tourist season begins to slowly wind down for this year, it was magnificent to learn of plans for a facility that will inject a whole new lease of life to Tralee town and to the entire county.

“We are all well aware of the hugely positive economic impact the Astellas plant in Killorglin has had on the local economy and it has helped many people to build homes, educate their children and enjoy a great quality of life,” read the statement from the Chamber.

“Now it is Tralee’s turn to reap the benefits and we are delighted for our colleagues and friends there and for the entire county as everybody will benefit,” the Chamber said.
