MUNSTER Technological University’s North Campus in Tralee will play a central role if Motorsport Ireland’s bid to host the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Ireland from 2025 is successful, after Kerry has been confirmed as one of three locations at a press conference in Dublin today.

If the bid is successful, beginning in 2025, the premier rally championships will be staged in Ireland and MTU’s North Campus in Tralee is to play a starring role in the races which are watched by a global audience which surpasses 240 million spectators.

One of the criteria to hold the event is a 10,000 square metre solid footing site for the WRC service park, along with ancillary modern buildings and infrastructure to accommodate the media centre, administrative functions, and medical centre.

MTU North Campus, including the Kerry Sports Academy, were identified as one of three preferred locations in the country to meet such criteria. The other locations are in Limerick and Waterford.

Today’s announcement is predicated on securing Government funding and this is a process that is underway at present. The bid is currently under consideration by senior management in the Major Sports Events Unit of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Commenting on the announcement Ciara Looney, Vice President Corporate Affairs at MTU, said; “This is an incredible opportunity to promote MTU, Kerry and Ireland to a global audience. We have world class facilities at MTU in Kerry and it’s especially rewarding that the inspection teams recognised these as well as the great effort everybody involved mounted for our bid. It really is a team effort.”
