Earthquake Fundraiser: Our fundraising effort on Sunday the 12th March for earthquake relief in Syria & Turkey was a whopping success. A total of €2380 was raised, and we were absolutely blown away by the generosity of everyone who turned up on the day to sample the dinners and the mouthwatering array of desserts on offer.

Apologies to those who came towards the end when we started to run out of food – we’ll be wiser next time!

Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day & before – thinking especially of the dessert magicians here – and to Terrys Butchers & Horan Centre Dunnes who assisted with the ingredients required for the two main courses.

Those who set up the tables, took money, served the food & did the washing up. A special mention for the club staff who as always, facilitated us in every possible way. The whole thing was a great team effort – not surprising as this is something we excel at in Na Gaeil!

The money has been lodged to the Red Cross & Mèdecin sans Frontières – Doctors Without Borders.

Na Gaeil Senior Men: Our senior team’s first game in the Kerry & West Limerick Credit Union sponsored County League (Division 2) was played last Friday in Gallarus against An Ghaeltacht.

The home side had the aid of the breeze in the first half and proceeded to dominate the first 20 minutes, scoring 5 points without reply.

Two frees from Dara Devine finally got Na Gaeil moving before An Ghaeltacht got the final point of the half to leave them ahead by 6 points to 2 at halftime.

Things didn’t get any better for Na Gaeil at the start of the second half as An Ghaeltacht added 2 more points to their tally to push their lead out to 8 points to 2 with just 7 minutes gone.

However a much-needed point from Jack Sheehan was followed by 2 more frees from the accurate boot of Dara Devine meaning the gap was cut to 3 points.

However, An Ghaeltacht hit back with a point from play and with only 10 minutes remaining it looked like Na Gaeil would require a goal.

But the lads kept the pressure on the home side and earned a few crucial turnovers leading to vital scores from sub Eoin O’Neill and Dara Devine.

With just minutes remaining a Ghaeltacht player received a second yellow card and Na Gaeil capitalised with two Dara Devine frees, the latter one being the last kick of the game from 40m out. Final score: An Ghaeltacht 0-9, Na Gaeil 0-9.

Its great to see Diarmuid back after his injury but unfortunately Stefan picked up an injury during the Tyrone game. We wish him a speedy recovery. Kerry’s final game in the League will be next Sunday in Salthill versus Galway.

Kerry LGFA (seniors): Round 6 of the National League Division 1 saw Kerry travel to Páirc Uí Chaoimh last Friday to take on Cork. Prior to this game the Kerry girls had a 100% record and had qualified for the League final.

However, on this occasion Cork proved to be a little stronger and won on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-6. Kerry’s final game will be away to Galway next Sunday in Tuam at 2pm.

The game will be re-fixed for a later date. Last Saturday our lads made the long journey to Templenoe to take on Sneem/Derrynane/Templenoe/Tuosist in Round 5.

We were quickly out of the blocks and built up an early lead which we maintained until the end despite the best efforts of our hosts. Final score was Na Gaeil 4-19, S/D/T/T 1-10.

Scór: The Tralee & District round of Scór na nÓg was held last Wednesday night in the club hall. There was a great, enthusiastic crowd present to hear a lovely mix of storytelling, drama, music & singing, from ourselves, John Mitchels, Tralee Parnells & Churchill.

Na Gaeil was represented in the Aithriseoreacht competition by Matthew Riordan, who told the hilarious story of Barney – a man who bit off more than he could chew by marrying a woman with “notions”!!

His delivery of this piece earned him top marks, which is a rare thing in Scór. He was expertly tutored by none other than Helen Sugrue, who is the reigning Scór Sinsear Aithriseoreacht county champion.

Matthew was also part of the Nuachleas, along with Elsie Rogers, Faye & Isla Fitzmaurice, Sam Gleasure, Nicole Arefjeva, Bríd O Sullivan and Clodagh Burke, and they performed a mime entitled “In the Blink of an Eye”, written by our own talented playwright Mary Quirke.

They gave a great account of themselves but were beaten by a group from Tralee Parnells, who went back in time to deliver a drama telling us how The Rose of Tralee came to be written.

We wish them & the other winners on the night the very best of luck in the Co final, which will take place in Currow on Saturday the 25th March. Thanks to Fionán FitzGerald, who was MC on the night, and also to Tom Herlihy who co-ordinated the event.

We’ll be starting Scór na bPaistí shortly so if anyone is interested in getting a child involved please contact Margaret at 086 0855008 or Mary at 086 0806665.
