THE new Rose of Tralee said she can’t wait to spend more time in Ireland after winning the title earlier tonight.

Maggie McEldowney, representing Chicago, spoke to the assembled press shortly after winning the title and told of the festival experience and the honour of representing the Windy City.

“The festival has been incredible. The experience that we’ve [the Roses] shared together, we’ve seen so much of the country. It’s been surreal,” said 27 year old Maggie. “To be sitting in front of you is such an honour and a privilege and I hope I represent our class to the best of my ability.”

She also spoke of her pride at being chosen as Rose of Tralee representing Chicago.

“One of my favourite parts about being Chicago Rose is getting to wear the Chicago sash. I’m beaming with pride for the people back home. There is such a strong Irish community in Chicago, I cannot wait to share the news with them. The crown’s coming to Chicago!” said Maggie.

This was her third time applying for the Rose of Tralee. Her 100 year old grandmother in Derry, Rose O’Neill, thought she would make a great Rose.

Maggie said she was looking forward to meeting everyone and working with the Rose centres. She said she’s looking forward to promoting the Rose of Tralee and following in the footsteps of Maria Walsh and Elysha Brennan.
