TRALEE Chamber Alliance, in partnership with Cara Credit Union, has introduced “Siopa le Gaeilge” (Shop with Irish), a cornerstone initiative of the Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations.

As a town that embraces its status as an Irish Service Town, the Chamber believes it’s vital to instil the love and use of Irish from a young age.

At the core of “Siopa le Gaeilge” lies a vision to embed the Irish language into the daily lives of Tralee’s youth. This initiative is a call to the younger generation to embrace their heritage, to weave the Irish language into their everyday interactions, especially when they engage with participating local shops and businesses.

“Siopa le Gaeilge” encourages primary school-aged students in the Tralee and wider North Kerry area to converse in Irish – ‘as Gaeilge’.

In recognition of their efforts, students will be awarded paper tokens and stickers of participation – symbols of honour for their contribution to keeping Irish alive in our town. Pupils can then bring their tokens into school and when a set number agreed by the school is reached, classes will receive a “Homework Pass”.

These tokens are more than just mementos. They symbolise entry into a competition with prizes generously provided to the school and students by Cara Credit Union.

Siobhán Donnelly, Marketing Manager of Cara Credit Union; “We are delighted to sponsor this initiative to help promote the use of the Irish language in our community. As a credit union, we value our local culture and heritage and feel this initiative is a fun way to get us all using a cúpla focal.”Through “Siopa le Gaeilge,”

Anne Looney, Chair of Tralee Chamber Alliance Education Group “We invite the entire community to join us in this enriching journey. Let us come together to speak, celebrate, and live the Irish language, reinforcing Tralee’s proud status as an Irish Service Town.”
