Plaque Unveiled To Commemorate First Members Of Council In 1899

.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald at County Buildings this week to honour the first elected members of Kerry County Council. THE Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald, has unveiled a commemorative plaque at County Buildings in Tralee to honour the first elected members of Kerry County Council who were elected to the local authority in 1899.

This year marks 125 years of local government in Ireland and the establishment of county councils under the Local Government Act of 1898.

The first election to Kerry County Council took place on 6 April 1899 and the first meeting of the new local authority took place in the Grand Jury Room at Tralee Courthouse on 22 April.

Continued below…

.

The first members of Kerry County Council included those directly elected from 22 electoral divisions as well as the chairpersons of the six Rural District Councils, three members of the Grand Jury, and two co-options.

The first chairperson of Kerry County Council was St. John Donovan from Seafield, The Spa, Tralee, who was High Sheriff of Kerry and a member of Tralee Urban District Council.

.

There were some notable figures among those elected or co-opted to the new Council including Lord Ventry from Dingle, Lord Castlerosse from Killarney, and Arthur Blennerhassett of Ballyseedy Castle, as well as MJ Flavin from Tralee, who was MP for Kerry between 1900 and 1918.

Richard Latchford.

Another of the members, James Baily, who represented Tralee and who died shortly after the election, is a relative of a member of the current council, Angie Baily.

“This year marks 125 years of local government in Ireland and the establishment of county councils under the Local Government Act of 1898,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.  “This was a transformative moment in Irish local government and in Irish democracy and ensured that, for the first time, local elected assemblies were established to administer services in counties and on a county basis.

MJ Flavin.

“Though much has changed in local government in 125 years, many things have endured and survived that time. Kerry County Council continues to be the local democratically elected forum in which the concerns of the citizens of the county can be expressed, debated, and resolved.

“Public service remains at the heart of what we, do today, as elected members, as it was for those who took their seats on the first Council back in April 1899. We remain dedicated to public service, to bettering our county for all our citizens and to promoting and sustaining local democracy for the benefit of everyone in the county,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.

Lord Castlerosse.

PHOTOS: CBS Students Take Time Off From Holidays To Help Tidy Towns Effort

.
CBS students taking part in the Tralee Tidy Towns flower bed planting project.

LAST Wednesday saw staff and students from CBS The Green school lend a hand to Tralee Tidy Towns in litter picking and flower bed prep projects.

A big effort was made in a litter pick on the lanes of Tralee as the Tidy Towns Ireland adjudicators are still out and about judging the appearance of towns.

A flower bed revamp project on Prince’s Street was also the focus of some of the effort with some groundwork and maintenance of existing beds done by the CBS the Green team and Tralee Tidy Towns Members – supported by Anita Barber, garden designer.

.

The Tralee CBS boys were completing their two-week summer programme, the theme of which was: ‘building confidence and connections’.

Karen Tobin, manager of the programme, said that she believed that “this experience will not only benefit the community but also help foster a sense of responsibility and connection to their town. I hope that by their participation that we are able to instil environmental awareness, local pride and respect for our community.”

Chair of Tralee Tidy Towns, Brendan O’Brien said: “We are heartened by this support – Tralee CBS students did a fantastic job at a time when we need all of the support we can get in the town.

“We are delighted to collaborate with the school and we’d like to thank Karen Tobin the programme manager for reaching out to us and volunteering to help Tralee Tidy Towns. We’d also like to acknowledge our own volunteers’ effort and that of Anita Barber who attended especially to support our flower bed revamp. Thank to you Kerry County Council Tralee MD for collecting the bags as usual.” Scroll down for photos…

REPORT: Kerry And Bray Play Out Thrilling Draw At Mounthawk Park

.

David Moriarty reports on last night’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Bray Wanderers in Mounthawk Park…

KERRY FC 3-3 BRAY WANDERERS

Kerry FC were back at home after the longest trip of the season last week when they played Finn Harps in Ballybofey.
A narrow loss in that one meant a long trip back for the boys on Friday morning.

It was a competitive game with both teams having their fair share of chances, but the home side from Donegal prevailed and claimed all three points.

Ronan Teahan came close by hitting the upright and Aaron O’Sullivan made some great saves to keep the score close, but it was not enough on the night unfortunately.

Continued below…

.

The last time out against Bray Wanderers was at the Carlisle Grounds as Kerry were defeated 2-0. Goals from Cristian Magerusan and Peter Grogan claimed Bray’s sixth win out of six against Kerry FC since the Kingdom’s first appearance in the league last season.

Kerry would be hopeful of going one better and picking up at least a point against the Seagulls as Kerry are now four games undefeated at home. This was extended thanks to the late Ryan Kelliher equaliser two weeks ago against Wexford FC.

New signing Oran Crowe was a part of the squad for the clash and MU20’s player Bobby Amadasun made the step up to the senior team for the first time. The two debutants hoped to come on and make an instant impact in front of the home faithful in Tralee.

Kerry FC started the game well on top and after just three minutes Nathan Gleeson took the ball around Stephen McGuinness in the Bray goal, he passed the ball out to Sean McGrath whose shot was deflected behind for a corner. The subsequent corner came to nothing but it was a fantastic start from the home side.

Continued below…

.

Just five minutes later Ryan Kelliher had the ball in the back of the net but was given offside. There were a few shouts that the linesman had made the wrong decision but he stood his ground and stuck to his decision.

In a mad first ten minutes, Cian Brosnan had a shout for a penalty for a slight nudge in the back. Play was waved on and was probably the right decision as there was very minimal contact.

For a crazy opening ten minutes from the Kingdom where they were by far the better team, they got their reward through Ryan Kelliher.

A lovely intricate ball from Cian Brosnan down the channel opened up Ryan to be one-on-one with McGuinness. A slight touch around the Bray keeper from Kelliher was enough to put Kerry FC one goal to the good.

Ten minutes after going a goal ahead Kerry were awarded a penalty when Ryan Kelliher was amongst the action again when Max Murphy clipped Kelliher inside the area.

Mark Moynihan had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Ryan made no mistake when slotting it home into the bottom right corner.

McGuinness was close to getting there but the power was too much for Bray’s number one. Just twenty-three minutes into the game Kerry FC were in dreamland.

The dream had a dent in it though because just four minutes after Kerry’s second goal, Bray got one back. Darren Craven received a fizzed pass into his feet from twenty-five yards out, he took one touch and thumped it into the bottom left corner giving Bray hope.

The hope was doubled just a minute later when Harry Groome equalised just two minutes later. He received the ball on the half turn and had plenty of space and time to think about his shot before finding the bottom left corner.

On the stroke of half time, Nathan Gleeson nearly got Kerry back ahead when his lobbed effort from twenty yards out hit the top of the crossbar and fell kindly into the arms of McGuinness. The half-finished two a piece in a game that was breathtaking for the neutral.

Eleven minutes after the restart Kerry FC were on the front foot and got back in front thanks to a club first ever hat-trick courtesy of number nine Ryan Kelliher.

Bray were caught out at the back and a simple pass played Kelliher through on goal. The composure shown on display to take the ball around the keeper and finish with his weaker foot was nothing short of top-class from the Killarney man who writes his name into the history books.

The joy and jubilation was evident in and around the ground in admiration for the club’s leading goal scorer. Unfortunately, the jubilant atmosphere was short-lived as substitute Ben Feeney equalised with a free header into the bottom corner.

It was very disappointing to go level again after all the hard work was undone because of a free header inside the area.

There were very few opportunities in the final fifteen and it finished in a stalemate. On one hand an unbelievable night for Ryan Kelliher but on the other three points should have been grasped.

Kerry FC will take the point and move on as they head into the second round of the FAI Cup next week when they take on Cobh Ramblers in St. Colman’s Park looking to start a fresh cup campaign in style with a win.

Know Your Rights: Contraceptive Services In Ireland

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Birth control or contraception is the use of medicines, devices, or surgery to prevent pregnancy.  Ciara O’Gorman, Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Services advises; “You can get contraception from most pharmacies in Ireland. Most contraception will need a prescription from a GP but you do not need a prescription for emergency contraception or condoms.

You can get prescriptions for contraceptive drugs and devices, as well as advice about contraception from GPs, voluntary organisations and private family planning clinics. Voluntary and private family planning clinics usually have charges but may waive them or have lower fees in certain cases.

Continued below…

.

“Free contraception has now been extended to women aged 32 to 35.   This came into effect from 1 July 2024,” says Ciara.  You can get free contraception if you are:

• A woman or person with a uterus
• Aged 17 to 35
• Living in Ireland.

What contraception costs are free for people aged 17 to 35?

• Any GP appointments about your contraception options
• Contraception prescriptions from your doctor (at participating pharmacies)
• Emergency contraception (the morning-after-pill)
• Fitting, removal and check-ups of long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs)
• Other types of contraception such as contraceptive injections, implants, IUS and IUDs (coils), the contraceptive patch and contraceptive ring
• Prescriptions for combined oral contraception (the daily pill)

How do I get free contraception if I am aged 17 to 35?

“You do not need a medical card” says Ciara.  “You can book an appointment with a GP or doctor to discuss your contraception. This appointment will be free.  If you do not have a GP or do not want to go to a GP you can also get free contraception from some family planning clinics, women’s health clinics, student health clinics or health centres.  You can Freephone the HSE on 1800 700 700 to find a GP or clinic offering free contraception.”

At your appointment, you will need to give details of your PPS number, name, your date of birth and your address.

Your information is used to let the pharmacy know not to charge you for your free contraception prescription. You can also collect your free contraception from some family planning clinics.

Continued below…

.

Medical Cards & Contraception

“If you have a medical card, you get free contraceptive drugs, devices and free GP services including contraceptive advice. You can also get emergency contraception with the medical card.  You will have to pay a prescription charge for items you get from pharmacies under the medical card scheme.

If you do not have a medical card, and you are not eligible for the free contraception scheme, you will have to pay for contraception and contraceptive services. You may be able to reduce the cost of your contraception through the Drug Payment Scheme. For example, the cost of long-acting reversible contraceptives such as the IUS (hormonal coil) or IUD (copper coil). You may also be able to claim tax relief on medical expenses.”

You can get free condoms from:

• Sexual health or GUM (genitourinary medicine) clinics
• Some sexual health NGOs
• Many third level colleges

You can also buy condoms without a prescription from many supermarkets, newsagents and pharmacies.  Condoms are not free under the medical card or free contraception scheme.

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception is a back-up contraception. You can use emergency contraception to stop an unplanned pregnancy after you have had sex without using contraception, or if your method of contraception has failed (for example, the condom slipped, or you missed a pill).

You can choose different types of emergency contraception options:

• The emergency contraceptive pill (sometimes called the morning-after pill)
• The copper coil (also known as post-coital IUD)

You can use emergency contraception up to 5 days after having unprotected sex, but it is more effective the sooner you take it after unprotected sex.  You can get emergency contraception tablets over the counter in most pharmacies without having to go to a doctor for a prescription.

You can get free emergency contraception if:

• You have a medical card, or
• You are a woman or person with a uterus, aged 17 to 35 and living in Ireland

Unplanned pregnancy in Ireland

“If you have an unplanned pregnancy and need support, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has free confidential counselling and information services to help you consider your options and access the services that you need” says Ciara.  “My Options is a HSE free phone line (1800 828 010) and webchat (www.myoptions.ie) providing free and confidential information and counselling for people experiencing unplanned pregnancy. It’s important to note that this counselling and information service is also available to you if your partner is going through an unplanned pregnancy.”

• Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said: For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Kerry Parents And Friends Association Benefits From SEAI Grant

.

THE Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), has helped Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA) achieve major building upgrades and reduce their energy bills.

The not-for-profit received funding of €15,000 from the SEAI, 30% of the total project cost, for energy upgrades. KPFA installed external insulation to two homes.

Prior to works, there was mould growth on the walls within one of the properties so the Government funding led to the installation of external insultation, removal of mould growths, and improvement of the overall heat retention in these properties.

.

The project cost €50,023 in total.  To date, the association has saved €1,393 in thermal energy and 3,361 kgCO2.

The cost savings of the upgrades have also been of huge value to us as a non-profit organisation.”

Kerry Airport CEO Calls For Airlines To Take More Slots And Fly Direct To County

.
“No caps in Kerry other than the tweed kind” is the message from Kerry Airport CEO John Mulhern.

MANAGEMENT at Kerry Airport are inviting airlines to make use of available slots in Farranfore to help ease the pressure at Dublin Airport where a passenger cap is currently in place.

The Airport facilitated transatlantic aircraft under similar circumstances in 2023 and CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern said it would be a most suitable option again with the twice daily flights between Kerry and Dublin being extremely popular with passengers.

Kerry Airport is connected to three other major European cities – London and Manchester in the UK and Frankfurt in Germany – and it is capable of servicing the additional passengers, aircraft and crew.

Continued below…

.

Passenger numbers for 2024 are on course to match the record levels recorded in 2023 when 419,281 people passed through the Airport.

CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said; “Kerry Airport is an important strategic asset to County Kerry and the wider Munster region in strengthening transportation links both nationally and internationally. In excess of 25% of jobs in Kerry are directly dependent on the tourism and hospitality sectors and many more in business because of our airport connectivity. There are no ‘caps’ in Kerry other than the tweed kind.”

“Kerry Airport facilitates vibrant regional commerce, enables the movement of workers, drives business innovation and investment, and is of particular importance to many of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy based in Kerry. You can do business in Kerry, case in point Astellas Pharma, who recently commenced construction of a €330m facility generating 300 construction jobs and 100 highly specialised roles in engineering, science and technology.”

“I don’t agree with those who suggest that most visitors only want to fly directly to Dublin for tourism. In fact, many tell us they would prefer to fly directly to Kerry and statistics from Tourism Ireland and others demonstrate that very significant proportions of overseas visitors choose Kerry for their vacation. The emergence of the Wild Atlantic Way as a destination in itself has successfully attracted great numbers of visitors to this part of the country.”

“In this era of excessive urban growth, isn’t it time to shift the flow of people a little? I don’t have to fly to Dublin to visit Kerry, I can fly to Kerry to visit Dublin.”

Meanwhile, the Tender process is underway with work on an expansion project at Kerry Airport projected to begin later this year and be completed for the Summer of 2025.

All going to plan, it will involve increasing the size of the Departures Lounge, adding additional customer facilities, and developing a purpose-built Arrivals Hall which will include the necessary facilities for customs and immigration.  For more information on the airport visit www.kerryairport.ie.

Protest Held In The Square Against Russia’s War On Ukraine

.

A PEACEFUL protest by Ukrainians living in Kerry took place in the Square in Tralee on Wednesday.

The protest was dedicated to the memory of those children and adults who died in a rocket attack on July 8 which destroyed the county’s largest Children’s Hospital in Ukraine.

This action aimed to remind the media, authorities, and local residents that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing and that innocent Ukrainian children are dying from rocket attacks on hospitals and residential buildings.

.

During the peaceful protest, people demanded urgently needed air defence systems for Ukraine to protect against rocket attacks, which target children’s hospitals, residential buildings, and power plants that power entire cities.

“We are talking about cancer children’s hospital attack because of its striking cruelty. But such stories happen in Ukraine every day. Ukraine urgently needs air defence systems to protect itself. We believe that the air defence system is humanitarian aid,”  said Natalia Krasnekova , a Ukrainian activist in Kerry.

Similar peaceful protests took place on Wednesday in Dublin and Galway. Protests in Wexford, Portlaoise and Ennis are planned for the coming days.

Kerry FC Hope To Break Bray Hoodoo At Home On Friday Night

.

By Ivan Hurley

WELL, it may be mid-summer, but there is almost an autumn feel to the weather in the Kingdom this week. But the weather is sure to be a damn sight better than it was back in February when these sides last met.

Five goals, a red card, thunder, lightning, snow, hail, high winds and torrential rain in a game that lasted over 120 minutes. One would hope that sort of drama won’t ensue on Friday night.

Kerry come into this one on a mixed run of form. In the last 8 games, Kerry are unbeaten in 4 home matches (3 wins, 1 draw) but have been beaten in the last 4 away matches.

Continued below…

.

Football can be a funny game but when you look at the overall picture, Kerry’s home form must be taken into account when previewing current matches in Tralee.

Beaten by one goal in each of the last 4 away matches does put a sting in the good news story but Kerry will be keen to add another 3 points to the table on Friday night.

But Bray Wanderers have been a stickler for the Kingdom to date. Six previous meetings all ending in defeat for the league newcomers over the last 19 months will leave Conor McCarthy’s charges wanting to get some sort of revenge on the Seagulls.

Bray come into the game in a mixed run of form themselves. Two straight defeats against top-of-the-table Cork City and bottom-of-the-table Longford Town tells you all you need to know about the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division season.

Wanderers sit 5th in the table on 31 points, 12 ahead of Kerry who are in 9th. A closed gap of 9 points to that final play off place would be very much welcomed by the Kerry FC manager

The last time these sides met in Mounthawk Park, the game was delayed due to a severe storm in Mounthawk Park.

A heavy snow shower followed by thunder and lightning saw the game delayed by some 30 minutes as the ground staff worked hard to get the pitch cleared. Bray went on to win a tremendous on-field battle by 3 goals to 2.

Speaking to the media earlier this week, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy issued no fresh injury concerns for the Kingdom ahead of this one.

Valerii Dolia is a step closer to his return but will be a couple of weeks away from a return to the matchday 20. Head Coach Conor McCarthy and forward Kennedy Amechi begin 3 match suspensions following red cards after last Thursday’-s game against Finn Harps.

“They (Bray) are going very well,” said Conor McCarthy. “Obviously, with Ian Ryan’s departure, I thought they might struggle a bit because they were on a good spell when Ian stepped away. But Lorcan has gone in there and seems to have continued that along and maybe even improved things further.”

“So I think they are doing really well at the moment, they have some really good players. Every time we’ve played them we’ve had a good competitive game so it’s important that we use Mounthawk Park to our advantage. When we do play at home we seem to make it very difficult for teams to come down here so we need to use that and give it a right go for the 90+ minutes and give a performance that will give us a chance to get a good result.”

.

SUMMER arrived for a couple of hours on Tuesday evening as former students from Causeway Comprehensive School made their way in the sunshine to the Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

The occasion was the annual Debs Ball, organised by the students themselves, which saw them get together just weeks after completing their Leaving Cert.

Around 130 sat down for a meal followed by entertainment from the folks at Debs Guru and they no doubt had a fantastic time. We were there to capture the style at the start of the evening. Scroll down for photos…

Healy-Rae Calls For Social Media Companies To Be Held Accountable For False Information

.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae

DEPUTY Michael Healy-Rae TD has called for social media companies to be accountable for their failure to prevent the spreading of false information about various individuals.

The Kerry Deputy asked Taoiseach Simon Harris during his speakers time to ensure that the  bar in which print and broadcast media are held accountable to, is also placed on social media companies.

“I want us to get back to telling the truth and being fair in our comments,” he said after highlighting a recent incident where he said his late mother’s photograph was used in a distasteful way.

Continued below…

.

“They can say whatever the hell they like about me because it won’t worry me. It won’t take one minute out of my headspace. It won’t bother me. I don’t like it when they attack my family because they are my family. When they attack my friends, I don’t like that. But I am going to say this… My late mother died in 2015 and she was a highly respectable woman. She could speak seven languages. She never said anything bad about any human being. She supported all of us in every way she possibly could. And she was a nice lady.”

“When I saw one night her name being used in a derogatory way and in a political way, that pushed it over the line for me.”

“Why is it acceptable in the Ireland of today that people can go on social media platforms, and they can say whatever they like, about whoever they like. It can be members of An Garda Síochána, it can be politicians.”

“They can say outrageous things, they can say hurtful things, they can attack people’s families, they can attack individuals,” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD said.

Deputy Michael Healy Rae is challenging the Taoiseach to tackle the behaviour on misuse of social media and the failure of social media companies to act and will pledge his full support.

Kerry College Announces New Apprenticeship Training Facility In Monavalley

.
Colette O’Connor (Tralee Chamber Alliance), Kasia Lyko (Kerry College), Stephen Stack (President Tralee Chamber) John Herlihy (Kerry College Assistant Manager) at the announcement of the new facility at Monavalley.

KERRY College Monavalley Campus has announced the recent completion of the fit out and refurbishment of a former warehouse in Monavalley Business Park.

From June 2024, this newly transformed space will be utilised to expand apprenticeship training provision on campus.

This expansion will further increase the growth of apprentice registrations in County Kerry and meet the growing demand for apprenticeship training throughout the country.

Continued below…

.

This development is excellent news for Kerry College Monavalley Campus, local employers, and apprentices, who will now have access to their off-the-job training in a timelier manner.

Additionally, many Kerry apprentices will now complete their off-the-job training locally, eliminating the need to relocate to other parts of the country.

The expansion also benefits businesses in Tralee town by ensuring a constant student presence throughout the year, including during the summer months.

Most of the apprentices training at Kerry College Monavalley Campus are still travelling from outside of the county, benefitting local accommodation providers and businesses within and around Tralee.

With the increased capacity of apprenticeship training at Monavalley Campus, over 240 apprentices will be training throughout the summer. Some classes have already commenced, with further starts scheduled for June, July, and August.

Apprenticeship demand and provision remain strong, with new apprenticeships coming on stream nationally throughout 2024.

Tralee Chamber Alliance commended the efforts of Kerry College in expanding the apprenticeship offerings, and enhancing the public-private partnership approach to developing new apprenticeships.

“The new apprenticeship training facility is a significant boost for our community,” said Stephen Stack, President of Tralee Chamber Alliance.

“It not only supports local employers by providing a skilled workforce but also keeps our young talent within the county. This development strengthens the relationship between Kerry College and the business community, driving economic growth and innovation in the region.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Ioseph Nestor – assistant campus manager here in Monavalley and Kasia Lyko – National Apprenticeship Programme Coordinator who are much valued members of the Chambers Education Steering Group Sub Committee.”

For further details on the apprenticeship programsmes, visit www.kerrycollege.ie or contact Kerry College Monavalley Campus at 066 7149600.
