Excitement was in the air as over 100 people attended Cara Credit Union’s Prize Giving Night in Manor West Hotel, Tralee. Invited guests included our inspirational artists from Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and their families. The theme of this year’s Credit Union Art Competition was the ‘Walk of Life’ and this theme was excellently executed in all age group from under 7’s right up to the adult category.

Speaking to Pa Laide, CEO, Cara Credit Union “Prizegiving Night is a great night for our winners and their families and is testimony of the commitment students, parents, teachers and schools give to the support of our youth activities. We were delighted to see so many of our schools encourage their students to participate in the Credit Union Art Competition. This is a fantastic opportunity to display and showcase the level of talent within our common bond. All 1st prize winners will now go on to represent Cara Credit Union at Chapter 23 (regional level) of the competition.”

Cara Credit Union can confidently say that the ‘future is in safe hands’ judging by the level of interest our younger members have in the Credit Union movement via our Art Competition and Credit Union Quiz, which will be held on Sunday 2nd February 2020. Prizegiving night follows on from the Education Awards held last week, where 7 lucky third level students each received €1,500 towards their studies.

The yearly Cara Credit Union Education Awards are open to undergraduates in a full-time course of at least 2 years’ duration and the Dan Kellegher Memorial Awards are open to post-graduates in a full or part-time course of at least 1 years’ duration. The 2020 applications will be accepted from 1st August to 30th September 2020. The awards are open to all Cara Credit Union members in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.
The 2019 winners of the Dan Kellegher Awards were Aideen Griffin from Matt Talbot Road, Tralee and Clara Heinrich from Caherleaheen, Tralee
The winners of the Education Awards were Hannah Skelhorn from Brosna, Gavin O’ Brien from Ballyvelly, Emily Switer from The Spa, Cian Talbot from Caherleahee and Sarah Mc Mahon from Oakpark Tralee.
Speaking to Pa Laide , CEO Cara Credit Union “ we understand the college years are a very expensive time and often place a huge financial burden on students and their families. While our education awards don’t solve the problem, they do go some way towards easing the financial pressure. Cara Credit Union has never been more relevant for students, with our new Current Account and globally accepted Mastercard Debit Card we can now serve our students when they move onto college. Students up to the age of 25 and in a full-time course of studies are eligible for fee concessions. We also offer a low interest rate loan for students who need a loan. For parent who have saved up for college we have a low rate Saver’s Loan, which gives parents the option to “spend it or save it” on loans of €5,000 or more. Most people find it easier to repay a loan than it is to save so they borrow on the strength of their savings. With our saver’s loan they still have their savings at the end of the loan plus they have the flexibility of knowing that they can repay their loan anytime without penalty and they have peace of mind of free life cover on both their loans and their savings with our Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance. ”
Applications for the Education and Dan Kellegher Awards will be accepted from 1st August – 30th September 2020. For further information on Cara Credit Union’s Current Account and Student Loans go to their website www.caracreditunion.ie or call into their offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.

News Release

KILLARNEY CREDIT UNION AND CARA CREDIT UNIONS INTRODUCE A NEW FULL-SERVICE CURRENT ACCOUNT

Today (Thursday 17th October) on International Credit Union Day, Killarney Credit Union and Cara Credit Unions are introducing a new full-service Current Account.

The new Current Account includes the globally accepted Mastercard Debit Card with Contactless Payments, Standing Orders, Direct Debits, and the option of an Overdraft facility.

Members of Killarney Credit Union and Cara Credit Unions can open a Current Account online or in their local Credit Union offices. This is good news for Credit Union members and for consumers in general who have limited choice at present. Credit Unions are seen to offer something different to the major banks in terms of their personal touch and are considered trustworthy.

The new Current Account has simple and transparent pricing. A low monthly fee of €4.00 applies and that covers unlimited euro point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking and unlimited standing orders and direct debit processing and up to five euro ATM withdrawals per month. Full details of fees and charges are available on Killarney Credit Union and Cara Credit Unions Websites.
Speaking at the launch, Pa Laide, CEO of Cara Credit Union said:

“This is a watershed moment in the credit unions history. It means credit union members with savings and loans will now be able to get a competitive Current Account from their trusted Credit Union, and they will no longer need to go to a bank to get this service. For the first time, we will be able to provide our members with a real choice for their day-to-day financial needs. And this service, which will be accessible globally and digitally, will enable us to become even more relevant to our members in the ever-increasing digital world.

Speaking to Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union “credit unions have been voted the 'most trusted financial institution' for many years, and just recently they became the first in the world to receive the coveted the national ‘CX Award for Best Customer Experience in Ireland’ for a record-breaking five years in a row. This trusted position is one we want to build on with this new service launch. We envisage many members switching their day to day banking to the Credit Union because we are now a community owned viable alternative”.

Information on the new Current Account are available from Killarney Credit Union in Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen and Cara Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and on their websites.
