NORMALLY when people are heading off to searing heat, it’s for nothing else but sandy beaches and relaxation.
However, Robert O’Mahony from Cloghers, will head for the blistering heat of Mombasa in Kenya to help build a project for the ‘Ray of Light Foundation’, who rescue children from sex-traffickers.

Robert, a photographer with Kerry’s Eye, will head for Kenya in February and will be there for 12 days working from 6am to 3pm as a carpenter.
Robert first came in contact with the foundation while at mass in St John’s church, he picked up a mass leaflet with a notice in it about ‘Ray of Light’.
“I rang the number that was on the leaflet,” said Robert O’Mahony. “When I was told, the charity rescued children from sex-traffickers I thought ‘I’ve got to do that’,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to it. We’ll be working in 40 degree heat during the day!” he said.
Along with being a photographer, Robert is a fully trained carpenter. It just happened the charity needed a carpenter for a new project so Robert took that as his cue to jump on board.
Before heading out, Robert has to raise €3000, for the trip before he departs for Kenya, hence the fundraisers.
Hurling great, Henry Shefflin, is the patron of the charity, taking over from Derek Davis, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
“The age profile going are people in their 50s. Everybody involved has told me, once you go you’ll be back again, so it will be an adventure.”
Best of luck Robert.
