THOUSANDS of people passed through the corridors of IT Tralee on Saturday as the college hosted an exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) showcase day as part of Science Week.
The day included a Careers in STEM exhibition and panel discussion facilitated by broadcaster and lecturer Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin where company representatives talked about the varied STEM careers available to graduates in Kerry and beyond.
“The day went really well,” said Brid McElligott, Vice-President for Research and Development at IT Tralee. “We had a fantastic attendance, everyone had a really enjoyable time as it was very much a family day. There were many workshops for young people as well as talks from industry representatives in relation to career opportunities in the whole area of science and technology. Overall is was a fantastic day with the emphasis on fun and education.”

There was plenty of fun for families and children of all ages – primary and secondary – on the day with many free workshops and shows like Mathsworld, Lego WeDo, Cell Explorers, Designer Minds and Spec in a Suitcase. There was also a great show for kids with Scientific Sue, while everyone received vouchers for free ice-cream, coffee and biscuits, with the children getting a goodie bag to take home.
The interactive workshops engaged all ages and brought to life the world of STEM. The first Girls Hackathon in Kerry also took place which was all about getting young women creating with code and encouraging them to be aware of opportunities in the digital technology sector. Scroll down for photos…
