THE second of the Secret Cine Club’s open air summer screenings in the Town Park took place on Friday night.
The nights are getting colder so cinema lovers came prepared for the elements with umbrellas, hats and coats as they settled down to watch the classic Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.
Luckily, the weather was kind though – unlike during Raiders Of The Lost Ark when showers put a little damper on the event – with the only light in the sky being the moon…and no sign of spaceships.
Artistic Director of the Kerry Film Festival, Róisín McGuigan, explained why they picked the movie and indeed the other classic movies showing around the county this summer, which included Back To The Future, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Blade Runner and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off.
“When you’re picking a programme, you want it to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. A lot of young people might not have seen Close Encounters… because it was made in 1977 and older people might not remember it. It’s a movie not shown that regularly on TV,” she said.
“We wanted to appeal to everybody, but also to show quality films. If you want fluff you can go to blockbusters in the cinema, but it wouldn’t be our modus operandi to be showing something that wasn’t a good film. Close Encounters is one of those films that would be on the list of movies to see before you die,” she said.
The audience certainly enjoyed it and will no doubt look forward to more free open air screenings in the future.
