WHAT have The Beatles, Olly Murs and The Sound Of Music got in common?

Their songs will all be performed next week when the members of Tralee Musical Society bring their ‘That’s Entertainment’ show to Siamsa Tíre.

We called down to rehearsals on Wednesday night and found out more about the show which has been running now for about 20 years.

“It’s in the spirit of the old ‘Tops of the Town’ format,” said Director of the show, Oliver Hurley.

“It’s a variety show of music, comedy, excerpts from musicals and so on. What it does for the Society is that it brings new talent to the fore. With a regular musical you might only have a few leads, but with this show you’re doing snippets from different musicals, so it gives a lot of people an opportunity and we’ve found that it unearths new talent,” he said.

So what can we expect to hear and see next week?

“Well, we’re aware that we have an audience of all ages, so we try to have a good mix. We’ll have numbers from ‘Grease’, ‘The Sound Of Music’, ‘Memphis’ the musical, a medley from the western musicals like ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and ‘Oklahoma’, a tribute to The Beatles, an Olly Murs tribute…comedy sketches go down the best and this year we have a sketch about Disney Princesses who’re hit with the water charges,” said Oliver.

“We’ve great comedians like Tom Hanafin, John Scroope, Jim Adams and John Drummey. With all of them on stage together it makes a great combination and we’re blessed in Tralee to have the likes of them,” he said.

The show will feature around 100 people, including 40 children, and TMS regulars like Tim Landers and Jackie O’Mahony.

“It’s light entertainment at its best so we encourage people to book early. It’ll be a great show,” said Oliver.

The show opens on Wednesday, November 4 – and continues until Saturday, November 7 – nightly at 8pm.

Tickets are €18 (€16 concession) and can be booked at the Siamsa Tire Box Office on 066-23055.
