WE’VE bad timing.
It was break time when we called to Listellick NS on Wednesday morning and the junior infants were a bit bemused with us interrupting them mid-sandwich to take some photos.
All 30 of the new pupils seemed to be very happy though, as their teacher Riona Ruane explained.
“They settled in really well, there were no tears. There’s a big number here and they’re all very happy and enjoying themselves,” said Ms Ruane.

Over in Flemby NS, teacher Fiona Cooke, had a lot fewer new arrivals to welcome. There were five pupils beginning at the Ballymacelligott school, joining the other 13 from other years in Ms Cooke’s class.
“They all settled in very well. Some of them have siblings or cousins here in the school, which makes the transition easier in a multi-class. They are used to coming in for open days and science evenings. We usually invite them in beforehand for community walks so the parents have a chance to meet each other parents and the pupils can get to know their classmates before they start,” said Ms Cooke.
It makes for a great close-knit school as far as we could see when we visited. Scroll down for photos…
