JOHN Mitchels produced a gutsy, determined second half performance to surprise their illustrious neighbours from across town at Ballyseedy yesterday by winning 4-10 to 1-17.
A late Laurence Bastible goal was crucial in deciding this Credit Union County League Division 1 Round 2 tie played in glorious sunshine to give the home side their first win of the campaign.

Stacks played with the wind – blowing into the complex end – in the first half but it was Mitchels who opened the scoring from James Duggan.
This was followed with three points by Stacks but a well taken goal by Niall Sheehy left the score at 1-1 to 0-3 halfway through the opening period.
Two points from Shane O’Callaghan and Sean Dukes put Stacks a point ahead. Michael Wrenn levelled matters before David Mannix scored a further point from play, but a score from Alan O’Donoghue followed soon after for the home side.
Stacks went two points ahead soon after, before Niall Sheehy replied with a point from play. Shane O’Callaghan completed the scoring for the half to leave the visitors in the ascendency, 1-4 to 0-9 at the short whistle.
While Mitchels scored an early point it was Stacks who took the initiative in the opening third of the half scoring four points for the trot.
Then came the comeback. Two goals in quick succession from Alan O’Donoghue and Niall Sheehy inspired the home side and points from George Bastible and James Duggan left the score at 3-8 to 0-13 with around 15 minutes remaining.

But Stacks showed that famous resilience and ratcheted up 1-2 to lead again, the goal coming from Shane O’Callaghan. It was tit for tat there after with Mitchels levelling the game with a Shane O’Connor point before a David Mannix free gave Stacks the lead again. Shane O’Connor levelled the game with a point from play.
With minutes to go, the decisive score came when Laurence Bastible stole in to drive the ball into the net. Mitchels were not going to surrender that lead again and Greg Horan’s late point was a consolation score.
