STUDENTS from a local school were out and about on Friday doing their own little part in keeping their town tidy.
It was definitely not the weather that the TY students from ‘Presentation Secondary’ school wanted on the day, but they chose to soldier on through the wind and rain armed with gloves, ‘litter pickers’ and rubbish bags.

They gave one half of the local park a good scrubbing and going over. Evidence of this work can be seen as I arrive at the school, with multiple bags of already collected rubbish sitting near the entrance ready to be taken away.
Their endeavours are all part of the ‘Green Flag’ initiative of which the school has been an active and prominent participant over the last number of years.
“April is ‘National Spring Clean Month’. We’ve got the ‘Green Flag’ for the school and we achieved this by helping the children to become more environmentally aware. There’s a litter and waste programme for the green schools and this [the clean-up] is part of that litter and waste programme,” said teacher and organiser Gay Will.
“We’ve actually got the ‘Green Flag’ already so we’ve got to maintain it. There are seven Green Flags, you can get one every second year. The first one is for litter and waste. Today, the class will be doing the far of the park. It’s amazing what you would pick up. When you look for it [rubbish], it’s there.
The girls were certainly in high spirits as they set off to scour the grass for any more undesirable litter, let’s hope that we can all take a lesson from this and learn to be more litter conscious.
