Action Lesotho Shop Moves But Its Book Lovers Go With Them

Meadowlands Insert

Fergus Dennehy talks to Paul Hanrahan of the Action Lesotho about the book shop, people’s reading habits and the work the charity does…

Paul Hanrahan 2
Paul Hanrahan, Manager of the Action Lesotho Book Shop says that the shop is continuing the draw in the crowds.

THE big move is over and the books have settled back into the heaving shelves at the ‘Action Lesotho Book Shop’ at Tralee Shopping Centre.

The NGO and charity organisation has just finished moving from their old premises to their new one and while the ‘move’ has only seen them head across the hall, it’s a small symbol of the positive work that the team behind the scenes are bringing to not just Tralee, but to people abroad as well.

“We’ve moved within the same centre because we’re very happy here, but what we got was a more open and brighter space for us and we have more space now to put more books out. We moved as well so that the public could see us more easily because what we make here goes to support quite a few projects,” said Manager Paul Hanrahan when talking to TraleeToday.ie on Friday.

The shop has been in the town for a few years now with both young and old finding their very own hidden gem within the perfectly dusted shelves of the store.

But what does Paul think is the reason behind the continued draw of the shop?

“The draw of the shop? I think there’s a couple of things really. We have a very wide range of books. We sell a lot of the usual types which would be the crime thriller and popular fiction, but we also cater for other people as well,” he said.

“Older people in particular love cowboy books, then we’d get people who would look for really interesting books such as George Orwell and other classics, that type of thing you know.”

“You’d be surprised at the number of younger people who would be reading the classics. They’d hear about them and maybe wouldn’t be able to afford them in other shops. From us, they’d pick them up for €2 and because of this, a lot of teenagers would be reading a lot of the classics,” he continued.

“The one thing that we can’t keep on the shelf though is anything in Irish. As soon as it comes in, it’s gone. We’d constantly be asking people if they have anything as Gaeilge and to drop them into us. I don’t know if we have any books in Irish left in the shop at the moment,” he said.

While the book shop itself is a great asset to the town and its people, the work being done has far more reaching benefits than just locally. The shop is run 100% by volunteers with all proceeds from book sales going straight into helping the people of Lesotho, many of whom suffer and live in extreme poverty.

“Children in Lesotho get a meal at school but then when a lot of them go home, they don’t have any parents. It would be a child-led family,” said Paul.

“You might have a 13 year old child raising another two or three kids, they might have no food in the house – as in no food whatsoever. We provide them with a meal at the weekends and we’ve introduced a breakfast programme as well. The €2 that we make from a book might feed a child for a week,” he continued.

“To be honest, people come in to buy books but there’s a feel good factor involved for them to realise that the profits are actually going to help someone somewhere,” he said.

They will attend the award ceremony in the Helix in Dublin on November 3.

There must something special in the water over at the Spa National School it seems, with this being the school’s second nomination for the FÍS Film Festival in three years, with their current nomination coming from the work on their short film entitled ‘William and Mary Together Forever’.

St. Joseph’s NS in Ballyheigue will see its film, ‘The Chase’ entered into the awards while St. Finians NS entered with ‘Micko’s Missing Medals’ and finally Ardfert NS will be hoping that their piece ‘The Fight for Freedom’ will prove triumphant.

“We in Spa N.S. are delighted to be involved in the FÍS Film Festival again this year. FíS is an amazing experience for all students. It allows them to tap into and exhibit all of their wonderful creativity and imagination in a medium that excites and inspires audiences,” said Spa NS school principal Peter Linehan.

“The project encourages and demands teamwork from everyone. It is wonderful to see how all students participate and give their all, from start to finish and how they take real pride in their entry. The FÍS event in Dublin is the ‘icing on the cake’ as the students get the opportunity to celebrate all of the entries and share their experiences with their peers,” he finished.

To enter the festival, primary schools across the country were asked to devise a five minute long film on a subject of their choice.

The film had to be produced by the children and their teachers and entries are judged on imagination and creativity, the originality of the story, excellence in set design, costume design, film direction and production as well as the use of sound, acting and cinematography with those that chose to use special techniques such as animation or special effects to be awarded extra points.

Awards will be made in a wide variety of categories including Comedy, Acting, Storytelling, Adaptation, Animation, Special Effects, Direction, Costume, Editing, Production, Cinematography, Sound, Public Safety, Best Newcomer, Best Junior Class Production and Historical Adaptation, among others.

Helen O’Carroll will talk about the five witnesses that gave evidence at Roger Casement’s trial.

TRALEE Library is getting set to host a lecture next week based on the stories of the five civilians that witnessed the arrival of Roger Casement to Kerry in 1916 and the subsequent story of their evidence at his trial.

The story of Casement’s arrival in Kerry is well known around Ireland, how he came ashore on Banna Strand on a German ship that was carrying up to 20,000 rifles that were to be distributed amongst the Irish rebels.

He was then captured at McKenna’s fort and subsequently tried and hung for treason on London.

John McCarthy, Mary Gorman, Martin Collins, Michael Hussey and Maurice Moriarty were the five witnesses to Casement’s time in Kerry and who were then called to give evidence as witnesses at his trial in London.

Curator of the Kerry County Museum, Helen O’Carroll will give the lecture at 7.30pm on Tuesday next, October 20, where she will be discussing how the lives of the five witnesses were changed irrevocably by their chance sighting of Casement during his 31 hours in Kerry.

Kelly Oliver penned her beautiful new song entitled ‘Miles To Tralee’.

A TALENTED up and coming singer/songwriter has penned a beautiful new song based on the true story of how her maternal grandmother journeyed from her hometown of Tralee to England in order to find work.

Kelly Oliver is behind the upbeat song entitled ‘Miles to Tralee’, which talks about the desire that her grandmother feels to journey back to Ireland just to see her hometown and the land that she was born in once again.

“Well, my grandmother’s maiden name was Cleary and she lived in Stacks Villas in Tralee. She then moved over to London war to find work after the war and this was where she met my grandfather in Willesden, whom she then married,” said Kelly when talking to TraleeToday.ie yesterday.

“I am very connected to my Irish roots, and feel very much a part of the culture when I visit Ireland. This is something I feel my grandmother has passed on to me,” she continued.

“I am a contemporary folk singer influenced heavily by traditional Irish music and was inspired to write about her story because she has partly inspired my career as a folk singer. It makes me happy to think about her whenever I sing it, which is an element of the folk song tradition,” she finished up.

The London-based singer is certainly a talent and one that is steadily making her way up the rungs of the musical ladder. She has been described in The Times as “an artist that blends traditional values with hints of a bold indie-pop sensibility” while her album ‘This Land’ received a four star review from The Telegraph newspaper.

‘Miles to Tralee’ will be officially released on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Bandcamp on November 20 and will feature on Kelly’s second album which is set to be released in March 2016.

New Community Responders Scheme To Be Set Up In Tralee

Tralee Community Responders
Tralee will benefit from a new ‘Community Responders Scheme’.

TRALEE is to get a new ‘Community Responder Scheme’ (CFR) to assist the Ambulance Service in various life threatening emergencies.

The scheme will be made up entirely of volunteers living or working within the coverage area who will be on a roster system. The scheme will be reliant entirely on public support and business sponsorship and it is estimated that the scheme will require €8,000 in order to ‘go live’.

The scheme will be linked to, and under the control of, the National Ambulance Service, who are supporting
the scheme for Tralee.

Continued below…

Arthur Spring 2
.

Emergency calls for the scheme will be sent by ambulance control to the pagers of the responders on call. The scheme will attend calls for choking, stroke, chest pain and cardiac arrest within the 6km radius which is centered at the railway flyover on the Tralee Bypass.

The scheme will be managed on a local level by Scheme Coordinator Sean Horgan who also set-up and
continues to run the Ardfert & District Community First Responders which went live on 23rd February this year
and had attended 27 emergency calls as at 9th October.

“We are lucky enough in Tralee to have an ambulance station but the crews have a very large coverage area spanning from Kerry Head to Knocknagoshel. So what we intend to do, like the 120+ CFR schemes nationwide, is assist the National Ambulance Service where possible to ensure that assistance is given to persons choking, experiencing chest pain, a stroke or cardiac arrest,” said Sean Horgan, commenting on the setting up of the group.

Businesses and locals are asked to pledge their support to the CFR scheme in order to get it up and running.

“CFR schemes are worth their weight in gold and do tremendous work around Ireland. In times where ambulances are on other calls, you can still rest assured that a trained Community Responder is on their way to you. Taking Ardfert as an example, the members have assisted in many calls since going live and have genuinely made a difference and it would be great to follow suit in Tralee like other schemes in Kerry have – such as Ardfert, Killarney, Ballybunion, Sneem, Beale, Asdee and more,” Sean continued.

The responders will be local persons living or available within the 6km coverage area when on call. They will carry with them a kit bag containing all necessary supplies and a defibrillator when on call.

Full training will be provided and the only other requirements are that you are over 18, have a full driving licence, can pass a Garda vetting check, have access to an insured vehicle when on call and are not on call for any other
organisation whilst on call for the Tralee Community Responders.

The Tralee Community Responders website can be found HERE . A Facebook page for the group can be found HERE as well.

You will also be able to get in touch by e-mailing traleeresponders@gmail.com.

A PROJECT started by Castleisland woman Niamh Geaney and her friends has reached one of the highest echelons of TV coverage after it recently teamed up with the hugely popular US TV programme, ‘The Today Show’ on NBC.

Niamh Geaney, Harry English and Terence Manzanga are the three friends behind the ‘Twin Strangers’ (TS) project that has now grown into something beyond what the friends could ever have expected.

The project gained widespread recognition when Niamh found her almost identical lookalike (see previous story here) and has now gone even further with this partnership.

They have teamed up with the immensely popular television programme, which is regularly viewed by close to 5 million people, in a bid to encourage more people in the US to sign up to the site, in the hope of finding more doppelgangers for people.

The popular US show started to sit up and take notice of the TS project when the group uploaded a video of the very first meeting between two doppelgangers in the US.

“We got a huge amount of media attention after the release of our first ever US meet up involving Ambra from North Carolina and Jennifer from Texas (see video here) The Today show got in touch off the back of that, wanting to do a meet-up live on the show in Rockefeller Plaza in New York and who could say no to that!” said Niamh Geaney when talking to TraleeToday.ie yesterday.

“They had been following my story until now so it’s amazing to see it grow and to think that now we have the chance to bring a few doppelgänger pairs together from around the US,” she continued.

“We want as many people as possible to have the chance to find their doppelgängers and the more people that are registered the more chance everybody has of finding an exact match,” Niamh said.

“Twin Strangers is hugely popular in America and all around the globe. Just this week I’ve seen new users from the likes of Mayotte, Bahrain and Belarus sign-up. It really is a global phenomenon and an incredible thing to witness.”

Did she expect the project to take off the way it has?

“No we most certainly did not. What began as three friends with a bet to see which one of us could find our doppelganger in 28 days, to become what it has become: we now have a website called twinstrangers.com with over half a million people registered from around the globe trying to find their doppelganger, it’s unbelievable!” she said.

Check out the video down below…

We were on NBC’s Today Show! We’re looking for US Doppelgängers to fly to New York and meet for the very first time! Thanks Today Show for getting the ball rolling, if you haven’t registered yet, sign up now on www.TwinStrangers.com.

Share this with your friends and family too and maybe they could meet their Doppelgängers!

All funds raised from the afternoon will go toward continuing the building of the new extension at the school, which includes new classrooms, canteen space and learning support rooms.

The school is hoping to have this ready at some point before Christmas, with classes to begin there in the new year.

With spot prizes and and generous jackpots on the night, it seems like this is going to be one event that is not to be missed.

A TRALEE school is celebrating after benefitting from the latest ‘Sports Capital Programme’ grants allocation.

The Clash-based Coláiste Gleann Lí post-primary school received €90,000  and means that it is the only school-based application in the entire country to receive a grant.

This new influx of money will now be used by the school to help build a new changing room and other facilities at the onsite astro turf pitch.

The staff and management at the school were understandably delighted at the news which they felt complimented the image of the school as one that was ‘on the rise’ in the town.

“This fantastic news is timely as it will compliment our extension which is through the planning process and moving to the building phase shortly; with estimated completion date for next September. This new extension will include additional classrooms, a new engineering facility and a creative arts, media and library space in order to cater for the recent surge in enrolments,” said Principal Richard Lawlor.

“This welcome announcement will ensure that our fabulous on-site astro turf facility is fully maximised by the school and our community partners,” he continued.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone that played a part in making this happen; in particular our community partners and the Management and staff of Kerry Education and Training Board,” he finished.

The Assistant Principal, Maryanne Slattery expressed her delight as well at the money received.

“We will be delighted to show our sports capital and extension plans along with our state-of-the-art astro turf facility to members of the public, at our Open Day next Saturday, October 17th, from 10am to 1pm,” she said.
