MUNSTER Technological University has announced the winners of this year’s ‘Haberdashery — Circular & Sustainable Design’ programme coinciding with global Revolution Fashion Week 2023.

Ireland’s Knowledge Center for Carbon Climate and Community Action (IKC3) and the CIRCBIO research group at MTU are working with transition year students to advance their sustainability knowledge, develop their eco-design, social awareness and entrepreneurial skills to create new sustainable fashion products and services, embracing the business models of the circular economy.

Haberdashery is a two-day design challenge where senior cycle students develop their research and design skills to create circular and sustainable business ideas for clothing, footwear, bags or accessories.

The premise of this programme is to weave transversal skills in research, design and collaboration, along with knowledge of the EU and Irish policy landscape, into challenges which enable students to react to the climate crisis through creativity and empowerment.

Over 100 students took part in the Haberdashery 2023 programme, which included looking at the link between climate change and fast fashion; the 9 R’s and sustainable choices we can make as individuals.

Clothing brand founder, Paul Galvin, an Industry Ambassador for the Haberdashery programme, spoke to the students about the importance of storytelling for inclusion in branding, andtechnological and social innovations within the fashion industry, such as bio-based and renewable materials and circular business models.
