THE Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club ran its 42nd Ring of Kerry Car Run on Saturday.
The run is the fourth longest running car classic car run in the country. Two years ago, the club marked the event’s 40th by attracting over 110 cars.
Last year, a very low -key event took place once restrictions lifted in July to maintain the club’s unbroken record of 41 consecutive runs.

With just 100 people permitted to attend outdoor events, this year’s run was restricted to just 50 cars (two per car) and to club members only.
Usually a two-day event, with an overnight halt in either Waterville or Caherdaniel, the 2021 edition was completed in just one day.
The oldest car on the run was a 1930 Chrysler 66 driven by Michael Cotter from Kells Bay.

One of the newest cars present was a 1990 Seat Ibiza, 90 KY 1. It was driven by Dave Curran who was giving the car its first outing since gaining classic status once it turned 30 years old.
“It was very important to the club that the run retains its unbroken run, it is one of the four oldest runs in the country,” said club secretary Garrett Foley.
“We were very concerned about current restrictions, so we limited it to 50 cars, all registration was done online, which is something we are going to do in the future, even after all these COVID-19 restrictions. We hope to be back next year with a full two-day event and an overnight halt.”
The event started from the Ballygarry House Hotel at 11am last Saturday morning and all cars made it back despite a few mishaps on the way.

“I thought we would have a few problems because of the heat, like fuel vaporising but it turned out most cars had problems because they were not used in the last year,” said Garrett.

The Myles Foley award for contributing to Vintage, Veteran and Classic car motoring, is presented every year by the Foley family in memory of their late father and this year was given to Johnny Cahillane, Killorglin, a long time member of Club.
The winner of best car was Daithi de Prat for his Porsche 911 and he received a €40 Garveys Supervalu voucher, sponsored by Garveys.
