CANCER support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, has been chosen as the host organisation for the Kerry leg of the poignant Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Tour, which comes to Tralee on April 21 and 22.

The Tralee-based charity has joined forces with portrait owner David Brennan and friends and family of the late cervical cancer campaigner for an awareness raising initiative, kindly supported by MTU Kerry and Tralee Chamber Alliance.

As part of the weekend’s programme, the stunning portrait will be open for public viewing at the Sólás Centre, MTU Kerry North Campus on Saturday, April 22 from 10.30 am -1pm.

David Brennan, lifetime friend of Vicky, will be present to unveil the portrait at 11am sharp, followed by public viewing until 1pm.

Painted by artist Vincent Devine, the vision for the portrait is to continue Vicky’s legacy and educate people about cervical cancer. This is the first time the portrait has been exhibited in Kerry and Recovery Haven Kerry board chairman, Tim McSwiney, says the charity is honoured to have been invited to host the event.

“Given the nature of our work in supporting those with cancer and their families, we were honoured and extremely privileged when we were approached to facilitate the exhibition and tour here in Kerry,” she said.

“This is a very important awareness raising campaign and we are thrilled to be part of such a special event that also celebrates Vicky’s incredible story. We are so grateful to be invited to collaborate with Vicky’s friends and family and wish to acknowledge their support, as well as the support of MTU Kerry, Tralee Chamber Alliance and so many other local businesses people and community groups.”

Saturday’s unveiling and exhibition will be preceded on Friday night by a panel discussion with John Wall – Cancer Patient Advocate and Friend of Vicky Phelan, David Brennan, and a number of other prominent advocates and campaigners at MTU, attended by close to 200 invited guests. Journalist and Radio Kerry presenter, Deirdre Walsh, will chair this event.
