DESPITE dealing with its share of cynicism from the national media, the Rose of Tralee is still huge hit with Irish viewers.

Some 1.7 million people tuned in to watch the Rose of Tralee on RTE over two nights which was around the same figure as last year.

743,800 viewers watched on as Daithí announced Chicago’s Maggie McEldowney as the 2016 Rose of Tralee. On Tuesday night an average of 618,600 watched after the RTE Nine O’Clock News.

It wasn’t just at home either where people were enthralled by what was happening in The Dome. On the RTE Player and RTE Player International 115,000 were watching worldwide. Which is up a whopping 60% on last year’s figure.

40% of live streams were from abroad, with countries, UK, US and Germany making up the majority of that figure.

The festival was once again one of the social media events of the year. From Monday there were 55,400 mentions of the Rose of Tralee on Twitter. So no matter what some people may say, there is still a huge audience for the Rose of Tralee and it will be with us for many more years to come.
