St Brendans BasketballLadies Div 2

KCYMS 54 St. Brendan’s 72

St. Brendan’s Senior Ladies travelled to play KCYMS in the Ladies Div 2 County League and came away from Killorglin with a great win. Brendan’s got off to a slow start but in an evenly contested opening quarter the sides were locked together at 23-23 at the end of the first.

Brendan’s began to find their scoring range in the second and steadily built up a 44-32 lead at half time. A mix of great defence and accuracy in offence say Brendan’s make the most of the opportunities in the third quarter and led 61-45 at three quarter time.

The visitors were able to rely on some fast break baskets in the final quarter and easily saw out the win on a final scoreline of 72-54. Our Ladies will next play away to HHS Lixnaw on Wednesday 20th January.

Boys U14 Div 3 Plate Quarter Final

St. Pauls 26 St. Brendan’s 41

Brendan’s travelled to the Aura in Killarney for their second game of the Div 3 plate competition. As both teams warmed up it was clear that the St. Pauls team had a serious height and size advantage over the Brendan’s boys.

Brendan’s pressured the Paul’s offence giving little room for them to manoeuvre.

Graham Sheehy and Sean Dillane forced turnovers and took off on the fast break yielding some precious scores.  Garry Lynch’s ball-handling and passing was assured providing a solid base from which Brendan’s formidable offence was launched.

Ryan McHugh and Sam McCarthy played bigger than their stature, boxing out and securing rebounds in offence and defence. After the first quarter Brendan’s led 9 -3. Paul’s fought back in the second quarter using their size and strength to good effect.

Liam Kingston broke through the Paul’s defence to score a basket and Jack Clapham followed this with a lovely shot. In defence Matthew Hussey and Sam McCarthy battled hard with the Paul’s big men limiting them to 4 baskets in the quarter but at a cost of 4 fouls for Sam. At half-time just one basket divided the teams.

In the second half Brendan’s really applied themselves and their defence stood solid. Daniel Bowler was incredible and secured rebound after rebound only to emerge from between the two Paul’s ‘giants’ and make the pass that initiated the Brendan’s offence.

With a combination of good movement, smooth passing, steals and fast breaks saw Brendans score double Paul’s total of 8 in the quarter. The final quarter continued in the same vein with Graham Sheehy and Garry Lynch scoring at will.

Brendan’s emerged victorious on a final scoreline of 41–26. The semi-final will be a local derby meeting with Tralee Tigers and promises to be an enthralling game.

The game opened brightly for both sides but it was Brendan’s that led by 8-4 at quarter time. The home side fought back and took a two-point lead 12-10 into the half time break.

The second half was score for score as both teams looked for the decisive scores.
