Tralee Bay Wetlands To Host Events For National Biodiversity Week

A WEEK of nature events are scheduled to take place at Tralee Bay Wetlands Eco & Activity Park during National Biodiversity Week 2022 which runs from May 15-23.

Most events are free of charge, but the Wetlands asks that you reserve your place or book your tickets on line in advance.

The aim of Biodiversity Week is to encourage everyone to experience the nature & wildlife all around them.

Below is a full list of events taking place for Biodiversity Week, with times and links to website to reserve or book.

Monday 16th May: Habitats for Bees and Butterflies with Niamh Ní Dhúill   4:30pm – 5:30pm

Tuesday 17th May: Meet some of our Wild Native Plants with Niamh Ní Dhúill   4:30pm – 5:30pm

Tuesday 17th May: Bat Walk with Irish Wildlife Trust   8pm – 10pm

Wednesday 18th May: Explore the Wonderful World of Peatlands Workshops with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council   10am – 11:30pm, 12pm – 1:30pm & 2pm – 3:30pm

Friday 20th May: Ponds and Dragonfly in Conservation Workshop with Alan Balfe  10am – 11:30pm

Saturday 21st May: BioBlitz: Moths, Bugs and Flowers Oh My! with Jessica Hamilton  10am – 1pm

Sunday 22nd May: “ Be an Ocean Hero” with Irish Whale and Dolphin Group   12pm – 1pm (suitable for Children aged between 7 and 12 years) €9 per person

Sunday 22nd May: “ Identify Species in Kerry” with Irish Whale and Dolphin Group   2pm – 3pm (suitable for Adults) €9 per person

Some of these events are outdoor events so they ask that you bring appropriate outdoor clothing and suitable footwear.

Numerous Events Around Kerry For Biodiversity Week

BIODIVERSITY Week is returning to the great outdoors this year offering a range of family friendly, fun events that celebrate Kerry’s wildlife.

From Saturday May 14th until Sunday May 22nd many local groups are running events, days out, walks and talks on the many aspects of Kerry’s wildlife.

Events are kindly co-ordinated by Transition Kerry with support from Tralee Wetlands Centre; Gortbrack Farm; Forest Connections; Magharees Conservation Association, LIVE (Llŷn IVeragh Eco-museums) and Tidy Town committees all over the county.

A sample of events include a free eco-tour boat trip into Tralee Bay; learning how-to create a wildlife community garden; lots of walks and events by the sea-side in the Maharees, South Kerry or maybe go inland for a family woodland walk near Castlemaine.

Any budding wildlife photographers should enter Ireland’s 10th Annual Biodiversity Photographer of the Year competition.

The competition, open to all amateur photographers, is looking for photographs that capture an image of some of the biodiversity in your area. Whether you live in the heart of the countryside or the centre of a city, there is wildlife to be found.

Photos must be taken in the month of May and can be submitted at https://biodiversityweek.ie/photo-competitions/ between May 1st and May 31st.

The week is funded by Kerry County Council and supported nationally by the Irish Environment Network and the Heritage Council.

Special ‘Spotter Sheets’ To Help During Kerry Biodiversity Week

KERRY Biodiversity Week has been running all this week, with International Biodiversity Day taking place today.

The week is being coordinated with Kerry County Council in collaboration with the Irish Environmental Network (IEN), who are hosting a calendar of events nationally.  The theme this year is ‘We are all part of the Solution’.

Kerry Biodiversity Spotter Sheets, which were developed by Kerry County Council, will help you to explore the different habitats around you.

There are a large number of wildlife groups, community groups, Tidy Towns groups and schools working on local biodiversity projects around the county.

Usually, this week is celebrated with public events, nature walks and talks.  But this year it was a little different, due to restrictions.

Biodiversity Week is coming next week and offers a range of family friendly, fun events that celebrate Kerry’s wildlife.

From 18 to 26 May, Kerry County Council in association with several local groups, are running a number of events, days out, walks and talks on the many wonderful aspects of Kerry’s wildlife.

“The series kicks off with a family friendly seashore bio-blitz in Waterville followed by rock pool dipping and other sea safaris throughout the week,” explained Cathy Fisher, Biodiversity Officer with Kerry County Council.

“A walk and talk on the Maharees Peninsula is hosted on Sunday next.  This year, film will again form part of the week thanks to events organised by Siamsa Tíre.  Killarney House has a series of events planned and our ever-popular nocturnal ramble in Killarney National Park and bat walk in Ballseedy, Tralee are also back. Annascaul is packed with events, not to mention events in Ballylongford and Finuge.  So get out and about over the week – there is loads to choose from,” she said.

Events are co-ordinated by Niamh Ní Dhúill and the Kerry Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust with support from Ballylongford Tidy Towns, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, Annascaul Adventures, Maharees Conservation Association, Gortbrack Farm, Transition Kerry, and the Kerry Education and Training Board. The programme of events is funded by Kerry County Council.

The events are open to everyone and many are suitable for children. Booking is required for some events.

Events To Take Place Around Tralee For Biodiversity Week

Biodiversity Week is just around the corner and offers a range of family friendly, fun events in Tralee and around Kerry that celebrate Kerry’s wildlife.

From May 20th until May 28th, Kerry County Council, in association with several local groups, is running a number of short workshops, days out, walks and talks on the many wonderful aspects of Kerry’s wildlife.

The series kicks off with an introduction to coastal life in Tralee Bay followed by wildlife gardening in Gortbrack Organic Farm, Ballyseedy.

There are boat trips, talks, sea safaris and rock pool dipping not to mention a jellyfish workshop in Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium.

This year, music and film will form part of the week thanks to events organised by the Fenit Development Association.

Waterville will host a sea safari by marine biologist Lucy Hunt and there will be the ever popular nocturnal ramble in Killarney National Park.  Kayaking with Wild Water Adventuresand coastal walks in Fenit and the Maharees will allow participants experience the beautiful coast.

Other events are supported by Clean Coast (An Taisce), Team Bramble, Tralee Wetlands Centre, Annascaul Adventures, Swift Conservation Ireland, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, Killorglin Tidy Towns, the Kerry Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust, the Community Water Officer, Maharees Conservation Association and many more.

So if you have an interest in learning more about Kerry’s biodiversity come along and take part. Most of the events are free, open to everyone and several are suitable for children.
