John ‘Tweek’ Griffin: “People Are Taking Notice Of Kerry Hurling”

Gavin O’Connor speaks to Kerry hurling captain, John ‘Tweek’ Griffin, about Saturday’s victory in the Christy Ring Cup and where Kerry hurling goes from here…

IT was a special weekend for Kerry captain, John ‘Tweek’ Griffin, who along with walking up the steps of the Hogan Stand to collect the Christy Ring Cup, brought the chalice back home to Lixnaw for the victory celebrations on Sunday night.

“It was fantastic to be around family, friends and teammates, it’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives,” he told TraleeToday.ie on Monday.

“Only a select few in their lifetime get to go up the steps of the Hogan Stand and collect the cup. We got a great crowd as well last night. It wasn’t just Lixnaw people either, they came from all around North Kerry and beyond,” he said.

It was a case of third time lucky for Kerry, who had tasted agonising defeat in the two previous Christy Ring deciders.

“We’ve lost a few of these finals so it’s nice to come home with a victory. They say you have to lose one to win one, so we really appreciate it after the couple of defeats,” he said.

“People are taking a bit more notice now of Kerry hurling. We’ve had a fantastic year, with the promotion to 1B as well. We’ve never had as much exposure at home and nationally as well,” he said.

It really has been a landmark year. Along with entry into the Leinster championship preliminary round next year, they have earned the right to face the likes of Clare, Limerick and Wexford, in Division 1B of the Allianz National Hurling League.

Even so, the Lixnaw man has his feet firmly planted on the ground and he knows the huge task that is ahead of them.

“It will be nice to have a few of those teams down here next year. They should draw a good crowd, it will be great for supporters to see the likes of Tony Kelly (Clare) down playing here,” he said.

“Laois, Carlow, Westmeath have been consistently performing, so that’s the level we’ve got to get to. It will take a lot of work to do that, but the lads are prepared to do that work. Seeing Laois beat Offaly over the weekend – that’s the level we want to get to.”

“This is the best prepared Kerry hurling team I’ve been involved with, but we can’t be under any illusions either. Division 1B is a massive step up, physically, mentally and every other way you can think of.”

“After such a great year, I know that fellas will go and challenge themselves again. In the past, Kerry hurling teams were able to get the odd win here and there, or maybe the odd good year, but they mightn’t be as good the year after.  So if we can drive on next year it will be great for the kids in the county to show them that we’re a serious team and we’re serious about our hurling,” said John.

Kerry will have to make do next year without playing at their regular home of Austin Stack Park which will be under development for the entire league campaign.

“It’s not really a issue for us. They had to do a bit of work on it and that’s it. Obviously it would be nice to have a few of the better sides there, but if we had games in one of the pitches in North Kerry it would gather a massive crowd and have just as good an atmosphere,” he said.

While giving the speech, ‘Tweek’ broached the possible idea of a team holiday in Thailand or Miami at the end of the year.

“I probably mentioned it a couple of times! The last time we won the Christy Ring we went to Thailand for 12 days. If we can get something at the end of the year it will be just rewards for the players. It would be nice to get a bit of sun,” he said.

The beaches of Koh Samui or Phuket won’t know what hit them.

Kerry Annihilate Kildare To Reach Christy Ring Final

Our hurling analyst, Mike O’Halloran, was in Newbridge yesterday for Kerry’s comprehensive victory over Kildare in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final…

Kerry strolled to the most convincing of wins ever I would guess in the history of Kerry hurling.

I predicted a close game that would end in a draw with Kerry winning in extra time – how delightfully wrong I was.

I based my predictions on Kildare having a couple of more competitive games than Kerry in the past few weeks and how Meath had tested Kerry in Tralee.

I did not reflect back to Abbeydorney two years ago in the league where this team gave Kildare quite a dusting.

The game was well and truly over by halftime when Kerry led by 3.13 to 0-3, the goals coming from Michael Boyle who was on fire from the first contact with with the ball.

In my preview I said that Michael needed to win ball in the air and man did he win ball!

His hand was like a magnet all day and his distribution and scoring was a joy to watch.

From the off, Kildare had no answer to Kerry in any area of the field and were it not for the heroics of their goalkeeper, Paul Dermody, Kerry could have had at least five more goals.

To add to his general saves, he also saved a bullet of a penalty from Shane Nolan.

All through the game, the Kerry fullback line was hardly troubled. The half back line of Collins, Dineen and Carmody blocked everything before it went anywhere near the danger area and along with preventing scoring opportunities they also linked up with Griffin and Egan to set up the “Magnificent Six” forwards.

Michael O’Leary was awesome from the throw-in and scored four points, Colum Harty worked and ran himself into the ground all day, bagging a goal and a point, Michael Boyle caught everything that was struck in his general direction and stuck in four goals and one point while his brother Padraigh was awesome.

He set up scores and tapped over five points himself and David Butler was busy all hour.

Oh yes, did I mention the man who is said to have had a “quiet game”, well Shane Nolan only scored 1-7, not a bad return for a “quiet game”. With his scores alone, Kerry would have won by a point.

The Boyles and the O’Learys scored 4-11 between them, enough to win most games.

This was a performance that needed to be witnessed first hand to be believed and in fairness to the Kerry supporters they travelled in numbers.

Kildare cannot point to any aspect of the game that they can take comfort from. Perhaps they can point to playing more than half the game with 14, but frankly I don’t think it made any great difference.

They never gave up the effort to get into the game but Kerry as a unit were not to be denied one of their greatest ever victories.

Kerry now face Derry in the final at 5.30pm next Saturday in Croke Park.

We will remember that Derry came to Tralee in the league and held their own that day.

Can they do the same next Saturday?

No they can’t. There is nothing to stop this machine. They set out to “Win The Ring” and that’s what they will have done by seven o’clock next Saturday.

Scorers for Kerry:  Michael Boyle 4-1, Shane Nolan 1-7, (5 frs, 2 65s), Michael O’Leary 0-4, Colum Harty 1-1, Padraigh Boyle 0-5, John Griffin, John Egan and John O Neill 0-2 each, Daniel Collins, Keith Carmody, Brendan O Leary 0-1 each.

REPORT/PHOTOS: Kerry Get Past Down Challenge In Christy Ring Cup Clash

Our hurling writer, Mike O’Halloran, was in Austin Stack Park this afternoon for Kerry’s Christy Ring Cup clash with Down…

Kerry 2-17

Down 2-10

‘Job done’ the Kerry management will say.

The Christy Ring Cup is the terminus for the 2015 journey of this team and they have taken the first steps towards that station.

A seven point win was secured against a resilient Down team who opened brightly and led by 1-3 to 0-1 after seven minutes when Danny Toner flashed the sliotar past Stephen Murphy in the Kerry goal.

Kerry started slowly – perhaps they had been upset by the late defection of Bryan Murphy who was unable to line out due to an ankle injury, he was replaced by John Egan with Keith Carmody moving to corner back.

The slow start came to an end when Darren Dineen smacked over a beauty giving Patrick Kelly licence to do likewise before Padraigh Boyle kicked the ball to the net to level matters on 13 minutes.

From that point on, Kerry were never behind with Down only adding two more points to 1-4 for Kerry, all the points coming from Shane Nolan. Colum Harty struck his customary goal on 35 minutes leaving the half-time score Kerry 2-7 Down 1-5.

John O’Neill, the Tipp man, replaced Michael Boyle for the second half and – as in the first half – Down had the first score when James Foyle split the posts.

Down were not to score again for a further 14 minutes with Kerry adding four – Shane Nolan with two Patrick Kelly one and a raker from Padraigh Boyle. Down did have a goal chance cleared in this time.

Kerry added further points from Michael O’Leary, John Egan, Patrick Kelly, David Butler with Shane Nolan adding two. Down added four more points and scrambled a goal towards the end when Myles Nicholson pushed the ball into the net.

Kerry scored 2-17, which is a fair old tally, but that is what is needed these days to win hurling matches.

The management will say a win is a win and so it is, but the shooting of 16 wides is surely a concern. It must have been difficult for the players to raise themselves for this game, one which everybody expected them to win easily.

There were flashes of the play that won the Division 2A title but not enough of it. So this game is the reminder that, as the management has been saying, the Christy Ring Cup is hard won.

So now it is on to next weekend where Kerry will meet the winners of one of today’s other matches.

The trip to Croke Park is definitely on and there is plenty in the tank for this team who played well within themselves today.

The loss of Bryan Murphy, the shooting of 16 wides, the huge weight of expectation and the lacklustre performance of a number of players, all these matters can and will be rectified in the coming days.

Bryan told me he will be back for next week, the fact that they created a further 16 scoring chances, and the dip in form of a few players will be sorted on the training ground, are all positives that will see their opponents next week fearing the Kerry hurling machine again.

PREVIEW: Kerry Hurlers Begin Quest For Christy Ring

Our hurling writer, Mike O’Halloran, previews tomorrow’s big Christy Ring opening round game for Kerry against Down in Austin Stack Park…

The Division 2A champions take on ‘The Ards Men’ on Saturday in Austin Stacks Park Tralee at 1pm.

The management of the Kerry hurling team have set the winning of The Christy Ring Cup as their goal for 2015 – one wonders if that was based on an expectation that they might not have been able to progress to division 1 B of The Allianz National Hurling League.

But progress to Div 1B they have and in some style. It make sense that the management would target the Cloyne man’s cup as it is the only vehicle on board which Kerry can compete in The McCarthy Cup.

Down come to town on Saturday to face the top dogs of Div 2A. Down finished third in Div 2B so Kerry must be odds-on favourites to progress to face other winners next Saturday in this format, which sees winners play winners and losers play losers in the next round with places in the semis and quarters available.

Kerry players and management that I have spoken to over the past few days are very wary of the favourites tag and caution that this championship and anything can happen inside the white lines.

There have been some disappointing defeats in the final of this competition over the years.

Kildare snatched a win last year as Kerry were favourites, in 2013 Gareth ‘Magic’ Johnson, a favoured son of the men from the Ards peninsula, grabbed a last minute goal to deny The Kingdom.

Kerry players and management are hoping for a large turn out of fans to help the team on its way and to perhaps acknowledge their great success so far in winning Div 2A making Kerry one of only a handful of counties with a hurling and football team in division one.

So come out and support the newest dual county!
