OVER the last few weeks, former Mounthawk student, Cian Sullivan, gained national attention after he became only the eighth Irish basketball player – and the first Kerry man – to sign a contract to play with a US College (see previous story).

At the beginning of the month, news spread that the Ballymac teenager had signed and would next year hook up with Le Salle University in Philadelphia, after he finishes a year at St Andrew’s Prep School in Rhode Island.

While back on home soil for Thanksgiving holidays, we caught up with Cian to hear how his chance at the big time has been going and life in prep school.

“I’ve been getting on great with everyone; teammates, coaches and classmates,” siad Cian.

Since he arrived at St Andrews three months ago, the seven-foot-tall teenager has been soaking up everything he can from his coaches and adjusting to a new school curriculum.

“My shooting has gone a lot better, I’m getting faster and stronger as well, so it’s all good. The coaches focus on the small details a lot more then the coaches here,” said Cian.

Despite being the only international player on the team, the school is a melting pot of different nationalities, with students from all over coming to take on the prep school experience.

For Cian, what happens in the classroom is as important as what happens out in the court, so far though schoolwork has gone really well.

“I find it a lot easier than over here because homework goes towards your grade, it’s continuous assessment. The effort you put in goes into your grade as well, tests are only about 40% of the overall grade.”

The daily routine at St Andrews begins with an early rise of 5:30pm for training, but Cian assures us that’s not every morning. School begins at 8:00am and ending some days at 1:30pm and others at 2:40pm.

Study time is between 3 and 4pm. From then, until just after 6pm, is training followed by dinner, then more study time between 7:30pm to 9:30pm with lights going out at 11pm.

Quite an intensive regime, but it’s not all work.

“We do get a bit of time to ourselves. If we want to go play Xbox or something we can do that. Weekends, we train or stay in the house, we also head to Providence as well, which is the closest city.”

The season for St Andrews gets started on December 2 and will go on until the playoffs in March.

“We’ll be all over the east coast playing, we’ll also head up to Canada for a few games.”

The school year will finish in May, then it will be back home to Tralee for a bit in the Summer, before taking on his next step at La Salle University and hopefully greater things.

Cian Sullivan has been offered a scholarship to play US college basketball.

A TRALEE teenager, who headed Stateside to a prep school earlier in August to further his basketball career, has just been offered a five year scholarship with a Philadelphia college.

Nineteen-year-old Cian Sullivan from Ballymac is to sign a letter-of-intent to play at LaSalle University after committing to the college while on a visit to the school’s Philadelphia campus last week.

Their men’s basketball team, the Explorers, play in the top division  of the NCAA and Cian will be only the seventh Irish player in history to get a scholarship to play college basketball in the US.

The seven-foot tall teenager had won a scholarship at the $50,000 a year St Andrews prep school in Rhode Island USA, where he started in September, but La Salle coaches made two trips to watch him play and offered him a chance ‘redshirt’ next season and then play four years in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

To ‘redshirt’ is to delay or suspend an athlete’s participation in order to develop skills and lengthen his period of eligibility.

The St Andrews coach, Mike Hart said that Cian loves the game and is willing to work hard. He said Cian has a good shooting touch but lacks the strength to make a big impact in college right now.

“Cian is going to be on the Mike Hart diet this year and try to gain about 20 pounds,” Hart told the Providence Journal. “He likes the weight room and is getting stronger and in two years I can see him being 230 pounds. He loves the game and is willing to work hard.”

A MERCY Mounthawk student has designs on making it big in the NBA after winning a scholarship to a prestigious US prep school.

Standing at seven feet tall, Cian Sullivan already looks the part.

Now, by winning a scholarship at a $50,000 a year St Andrews prep school in Rhode Island USA, the Ballymac 18 year old is on the right path to make his dreams come true.

Cian has his head firmly screwed on though, as his eyes are firmly fixed on getting to the next step in his young career, which will be gaining a college scholarship in the States.

The son of John and Anita Sullivan of Ballymac, Cian has had a busy year juggling his basketball commitments and studying for the leaving cert but he’s handled it well.

“It hasn’t been difficult at all. I don’t do much other things, so it’s just basketball and school I’m focused on,” said Cian.

Cian tells us a prep school is basically like repeating 6th year. At St Andrews  he will study regular subjects such as maths and English along with furthering his ability as a player.

St Andrews, is ranked in the top 25 basketball prep schools in America and a fantastic stepping stone for establishing a career in basketball.

“I’m really excited about going over there, I’ll arrive in late August, school starts in September. For the last two years I’ve been looking for somewhere to go, so I decided to apply for St Andrews in November last and I received word in January that I had got in,” he said.

A former alumni of St Andrews is current NBA star and former NBA Rookie of the Year winner, Micheal Carter Williams, so there is a possible path to the big time should Cian seize his opportunity.

Though Cian has not yet played for the national side, such has been his development over the past year or so, he is said to be a shoe-in for the next selection of the Ireland U20s next year.

Mercy Mounthawk teacher and basketball coach, John Dowling, has had influential hand in Cian gaining this opportunity. The teacher, himself a experienced basketball player, made videos of Cian playing so that scouts in the US could see his talent.

“It’s a huge thing for the school, a huge thing for the county and a huge thing for the country,” said John Dowling.

“Only a small minority actually get this far, the fact he’s going to a school that is $50,000 a year to go to and several NBA players have already attended, it’s a big thing. I was speaking to the St Andrews coach over the phone last night and he said he has already arranged three college scouts to come and have a look at Cian,” John said.

“We’re very proud of him because he has worked his socks off. What he is now and what he was two years ago are two different people. Being a seven footer, it can take a while for the co-ordination to come. I’d love to have another year with him because we’d win all round us,” he said.

Plans are already in place for a Mounthawk team to head over to Rhode Island next year while Cian is out there playing.

“It will be a great thrill for the school to do that. All the players in the school are going to be looking up to him now, which is great for us,” he said. See video below of Cian’s basketball skills
