KERRY Sinn Féin TD, Pa Daly has urged action on the skills crisis within the building trades.

Deputy Daly said Kerry is facing a crisis in the construction labour market with declining numbers of plasterers, brick layers and blocklayers.

“We need to build and deliver houses to alleviate the chronic issues in housing,” said Deputy Daly. “However any investment will be endangered if we don’t have the skills available to carry out the work.

“The covid-19 pandemic put a dent in the rates of training needed, and we cannot afford to delay any further. Accordingly, I have been in discussions with the ETB in an effort to expand the number of training courses around the county, not just in the Tralee training center.

“Numbers are still limited due to pandemic, but we can and should look at venues such as Killarney, Cahersiveen, Castleisland, Listowel and Dingle for extra sessions. This would not only equip young people with skills they can use and allow for an active labour market, but also breathe some extra life and footfall into these towns as we in Kerry look to recover from the devastating economic and social effects of the pandemic,” concluded Deputy Daly.

TRALEE and Kerry schools are being urged to apply for a share of the €40m available for the Summer Works Scheme next year.

The scheme funds small and medium scale building works such as gas, electrical and mechanical works, roof and window upgrades, and structural improvements.

Local Labour TD, Arthur J Spring is advising schools to submit their applications over the next two weeks, before the November 27th deadline.

He welcomed the announcement today by Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, T.D.,that €28.5 million has been provided for the payment of a Minor Works grant to primary schools for the current school year and that €80 million has been allocated for a 2016 and 2017 multi-annual Summer Works Scheme for schools.

“I would like to urge local primary schools to apply to the latest Summer Works Scheme, the application process for which is now open,” he said.

“This is an incredibly important scheme which supports those schools who need to get minor but nonetheless urgent repairs carried out.  Each school in Kerry can apply for one small scale project and will be responsible for the completion of those works. It also generates local construction work.”

“I’d encourage local schools to submit their applications as soon as possible before the deadline of November 27th. The process is now fully online and a dedicated helpline has been set up to assist schools who have queries about the process. Schools are also welcome to contact my office where someone would be happy to step them through the process,” he said.

“This is the first major house-building programme in Kerry for many years and the first phase of the Government’s Social Housing Strategy . €312 million has been approved by Minister Kelly which will see an additional 1700 social housing units come on stream by 2017 with an estimated 3000 additional jobs in construction created,” said Kerry North/West Limerick Labour Deputy Arthur J Spring.

An Bord Pleanala Uphold Decision To Refuse Planning For New Estate

AN Bord Pleanala have upheld a decision by Kerry County Council to turn down an application to build 98 houses at Caherweesheen.

O’Flynn Construction applied to build 98 houses with a crèche at Caherweesheen and Skahanagh.

The development was refused planning permission by Kerry County Council, as it found the site was prone to flooding.

The developer appealed Kerry County Council’s decision to An Bord Pleanala but the state body upheld Kerry County Council’s decision.

Bord Says No To Construction Of Large Estate At Caherwisheen

PLANS for a large new estate at Caherwisheeen have been shot down by An Bord Pleanala.

The planning body has refused permission for the major housing development proposed by O’Flynn Construction Company Limited to construct 98 residential units and a crèche at Caherwisheen and Skehanagh.

The planning permission was previously refused by Kerry County Council but was appealed by the company to An Bord Pleanala.

The proposed plans involved the construction of 98 residential sites and units, along with a crèche, and associated development works, including roads, footpaths, landscaping, and drainage.

Among the reasons given by the planning appeals board was that the site was prone to flooding, had just one vehicular entrance and currently has no zoning for residential development.
