SIX points was the margin of victory for Kerins O’Rahillys against Feale Rangers in a match where The Blues never looked likely of being turned over.

The victory puts Strand Road into the Round 3 of the County Championship. The draw for who they will face in the next round takes place tomorrow evening after all County Championship matches have concluded.

Barry John Keane kicked five points from play, most of them dispatched superbly over the bar from around the 30 metre line. The Kerry forward did however have to be substituted late on in the game due to an injury that saw him limp off the pitch.

Tommy Walsh’s decision to quit the Kerry panel looks to be paying off. He was in explosive form once again, scoring one and setting up another goal.

The match lacked the tightness and intensity you would expect from a knock out championship encounter. Feale Rangers were comprised mostly of players from Listowel Emmets and St Senans and the North Kerry’s side main source of resistance came in the form of Conor Cox, who kicked 0-8 in total, three of which from play.

O’Rahilly’s first goal came in the ninth minute. After winning a Rangers kick out, David Moran, laid a pass off to Tommy Walsh who charged at the goal running 30 metres with no defender coming near him and crashing the ball to the net from ten metres out.

The goal put Strand Road 1-2 to 0-1 in front.

Feale Rangers responded with a free from Cox. Two exquisite points from thirty metres out by Barry John Keane and fantastic solo run point from Cormac Coffey followed.

Rangers replied with two points from Cox and a score by Padraig Quille, the scores now 1-5 to 0-5 after 20 minutes.

Barry John Keane hit two more points from play and with the half nearly over Strand Road concocted the move of the match and made a Feale Rangers comeback look unlikely.

Jack Savage gave in a perfect diagonal ball outside the square to Tommy Walsh how rose high and showed quick hands to pass to Kevin Walshe who anticipated the run off the big man.

Walsh, who has been making a habit of scoring goals lately, coolly finished the ball passed the Rangers keeper.

The scores now 2-7 to 0-5 at the end of the first half. Strand Road with a comfortable eight point lead.

Feale Rangers gave a better account of themselves in the second half, but really that could be attributed to O’Rahillys taking their foot off the gas a bit.

Bryan Murphy’s goal on 37 minutes was the catalyst for a bit of a fight back. The Emmets full-forward taking advantage of a high ball into the square that was not adequately dealt with by the O’Rahillys defence.

Rangers would bring it to within four points at one stage, but with the game petering out, a goal setup by Barry John Keane and finished by David Moran finally put the game to bed and Strand Road into an eight point lead.

Conor Cox hit the two final scores of the night and put a small bit more respectability on the scoreline. Scroll down for more photos…

Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-11

Feale Rangers 1-16

DESPITE being a man up for 45 minutes Kerins O’Rahilly’s could not get past Feale Rangers at this Garvey’s Supervalu Kerry Senior Football Championship Round 2 tie at Strand Road.

The game went to extra time where the north Kerryman showed fresher legs and eased home.

For large spells of this game, particularly when they were a man down, Feale Rangers adopted a blanket defence happy in the knowledge that when they needed to attack they could get the ball to the excellent Conor Cox and he would do the damage.

With so many players missing from last week, five in total, this was always going to be a mountain to climb for the Strand Road side.

It was Cox who got proceedings under way with a point in the first minute from a free, Rangers with the benefit of a stiff breeze in the first half. The game throughout was very stop-start and we had to wait five more minutes until their was another score, Declan Quill levelling it up for the blues.

Conor Cox pulled Rangers ahead on eight minutes with a free, the North Kerryman were setting up a ferocious defence, but the Strand Road side did find a way through on 12 minutes when Ross O’Callaghan cut through their half back line and passed it to Barry John Keane who then slotted it over.

Noel Kennelly, who was taking the frees from the left side, put Feale Rangers in front again to leave the scores 0-2 to 0-3 with 15 minutes played.

A big turning point in the game came after 17 minutes when Feale Rangers’ Kieran Quirke saw red for a closed-fisted punch to the face of Jack Savage.

What followed was O’Rahillys best passage of the game where they cut open the divisional side on a few occasions. Kevin Walsh had a superb goal chance, but he just fractionally drove it wide when one on one with the keeper.

Both Declan Quill and Conor Cox tagged on close range frees for their sides to leave the scores at half time 0-5 to 0-6. A one point lead for Rangers when they were on the ropes for the end of the half, O’Rahillys failing to capitalise on goal chances and their dominance.

A brief shower of rain, just before the beginning of the second-half, seemed to kill off the wind that had been a nice little advantage to Feale Rangers in the first period.

It was the divisional side who started much the better scoring two quick fire points at the start of the half – one of which being one of the points of the game from that man Cox again.

Despite being a man down, Feale Rangers had complete control of the game. O’Rahilly’s decided to take a big roll of the dice when they were forced to bring Micheal Quirke out of retirement and into the fray, further emphasising the lack of options O’Rahilly’s had.

Barry John Keane tipped over a free and Feale Rangers got two more from Cox and Sean McCarthy to leave the scores 0-7 to 0-11 with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Feale Rangers’ blanket defence had fully descended at this stage with that four point cushion and O’Rahilly’s were finding it very difficult to build any attack.

Jack Savage was operating as the extra man, but was ineffective in the face of the North Kerry swarm.

Declan Quill got another pointed free and soon after the Blues were handed a lifeline. With six minutes to go, Quill’s brother Ronan cut into the box only to be hauled down by Maurice Corridan, a penalty the verdict which Barry John Keane rifled home.

1-8 to 0-11. Game on.

Feale Rangers responded instantly with another fantastic score from Cox. Rory Molloy for Rahilly’s hit back with an even better score 40 yards out on the right corner shooting over his left shoulder.

The ref blew up exactly on full time to bring this game to extra time, the 60 minutes finishing 1-9 to 0-12.

With Feale Rangers full 15 now restored, the first half of extra passed by without an O’Rahilly’s score while Rangers tagged on three.

It was always going to be a difficult task to overhaul that in such a tight game, but Noel Kennelly put the game beyond doubt when he slammed the ball to the net at the beginning of the second half of extra time.

The Blues tried in vain by putting Quirke in full forward, but nothing came from it and the game petered out despite two pointed frees from Quill. The final score 1-11 to 1-16.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s are out of the championship, but even more worryingly they stand in the firing line for an exit from senior football in 2015.

Kerins O’Rahillys: Gary Kissane, Giles O’Grady, Martin Tierney, Tommy Begley, Ross O’Callaghan, Andrew Thompson, Rory Molloy (0-1), John Ferguson, John C O’Connor, Kieran O’Mahony, Sean Walsh, Kevin Walsh, Declan Quill (0-7f), Barry John Keane (1-2), Jack Savage (0-1).

Sport: No More Chances, O’Rahilly’s Need To Win This

Kerins O’Rahilly’s will face Feale Rangers in the ‘losers round’ of the Super Valu Senior Football Championship this weekend in Strand Road at 4pm.

HAVING been quite easily brushed aside by South Kerry in last weekend’s opening round game, O’Rahilly’s have one last chance to keep their championship ambitions alive.

As it currently stands, a realistic shot at championship glory looks unlikely after the performance in Cahersiveen which saw the Strand Road side lose by seven points, when really it should have been more.

The threat of a potential relegation play-off to retain senior status next year makes this game a must win.

A drop down in grade would be an embarrassment and run shivers down the spine of any hardened ‘Narie’.

O’Rahilly’s are a shadow of their former selves having to endure numerous absentees through injury, emigration and retirement from last year’s side that got to the semi-finals of this competition and won the league.

They now bear the hallmarks of a side in transition.

“We’ve lost so many players, we’ve been in transition really since the start of the year and will likely be for the next few years. It’s all about trying to bring young players through now for the next year and a half,” said manager Barry O’Shea

O’Rahilly’s were also dealt a massive blow yesterday, with the announcement that county star David Moran will miss the game due to a knock he received to his knee in the South Kerry game.

“What can you do? David is injured now we’ll have to get on without him, but losing the other players is massive as well,”  O’Shea said.

All told, the side is down five players since last week’s game. Ciaran O’Mahony has been ruled out due to injury and Greg O’Connell’s emigrated to America during the week. They will also be without Mitchell Donnelly and Tommy Begley.

“We’re losing so many players we could do with a massive support this Sunday to balance it out!” O’Shea added.

Looking at this, with so many players missing none more so then their main man around the centre of the field David Moran – it’s hard to see how O’Rahillys can win this.

But Feale Rangers late capitulation against Stacks at the weekend and the absence of their Finuge players suggests they may not have bonded as a unit.

O’Rahilly’s are at home and will be fighting for, not only to stay in the competition, but also their senior status. Something the Feale Rangers players don’t have the burden of.

I think that – with a bit of luck – could be the deciding factor in the end.

Verdict: Kerins O’Rahilly’s by a point
