THERE was a fantastic crowd and atmosphere at BTS Fitness last night for a special fight night fundraiser which raised well over €3,000.
The event was the brainchild of Akeem Molloy and his partner Katie Donoghue, who suffered a miscarriage last year and therefore decided to raise funds for the Miscarriage Association of Ireland, a charitable and completely voluntary body set up to support women and men who have been through miscarriages.
“We wanted to do an event to give something back,” Akeem told us when we called to the event on Thursday night.
“We approached the ITT students union who helped and Niall Hobbert of BTS Fitness gave us use of the ring for free. I got 22 fighters, so we’re having 11 fights. Some of the lads are local friends of mine and the rest are guys I met in college,” said Akeem, a student in Health and Leisure, while Katie is studying Social Care at the college.
“We’ve raised about €2,500 so far through ticket sales and that’s before the raffle,” said Akeem, who also told us that there is a also a fundraising skydive planned in the coming months.
This morning, Akeem revealed that €3,298 had been raised in total from the night and he and Katie thanked everyone for a helping make it a fantastic event.
There was a great atmosphere on the night and the competitors really went at it in the ring, much to the cheers of the crowd.
After the event, many hopped on the courtesy bus to Quarters nightclub for the aprés-fight party.
