It was a special time for Conor McCarthy, Jack Farren, and Sophie McKenna who received their graduation hoodies as they prepare to move on to secondary school.

SPONSORED: Flemby NS — A School Of Diverse And Enriching Experiences

.
Flemby NS.

IT’S a small school but Flemby NS has so much to offer children and parents can find out all about its attributes at an open day next Tuesday, February 19 at 7pm.

Flemby NS is a two teacher school on the outskirts of Tralee in Ballymacelligott. It’s a school full of diverse and enriching experiences, as Principal Paul Roche explained.

“Due to the size of our school and very low pupil/teacher ratio, we offer a unique learning environment to our children. The outdoor classroom is an integral part of our ethos and we take every opportunity to get out and about. If you’d like to know more about our school please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or e-mail.”

At Flemby NS, they believe that self-esteem, personal growth and healthy living are key components of your child’s holistic education and are integral to the primary school curriculum. They aim to foster a life long love of learning and will assist each child according to their individual learnig needs.

The school has a rich history as in January 1966, the pupils of Ballymacthomas National School moved to the new school in Flemby after almost 100 years.

The school celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2016 with a great celebration attended by many past pupils. It was just the kind of occasion which showcased the familial feel to the school, which parents of children beginning their education this September can find out about first-hand next Tuesday. THE history of two Ballymac schools will be explored on Saturday with a special event in Flemby school.

In January 1966, the pupils of Ballymacthomas National School moved to a new school in Flemby after almost 100 years.

With the school celebrating its Golden Jubilee, it was thought fitting to include those who went to Ballymacthomas too.

“Flemby is 50 years old and Ballymacthomas is 150 so we decided to interview past pupils from both schools for a special booklet which will be available on Saturday,” said teacher, Fiona Cooke.

Former pupils have been contributing old photos for a special exhibition on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm at the school. They are invited to come in and share memories of their time there, to look at their names in the roll book and a calendar and commemorative booklet will be for sale on the day.

Later there will a mass at 7,30pm in Cloghers Church to remember past pupils and then a special night at O’Riada’s in Ballymac with music and chat.

The pupils at the school have taken a great interest in the event and have been learning about what life was like in Ballymacthomas all those years ago and went on a trip to an old schoolhouse on Muckross farm.

“They were very interested in what it was like in the old school, the differences between then and now and what the punishments were like,” said Principal Paul Roche.

Back in the 1966 when the school moved to Flemby, the teacher was interested in gardening and they even had beehives. Now we’re going back to that now with our butterfly bed and polytunnel,” said Fiona. It should be a great event for all the parish, but especially for past pupils of both schools.

WE’VE bad timing.

It was break time when we called to Listellick NS on Wednesday morning and the junior infants were a bit bemused with us interrupting them mid-sandwich to take some photos.

All 30 of the new pupils seemed to be very happy though, as their teacher Riona Ruane explained.

“They settled in really well, there were no tears. There’s a big number here and they’re all very happy and enjoying themselves,” said Ms Ruane.

Over in Flemby NS, teacher Fiona Cooke, had a lot fewer new arrivals to welcome. There were five pupils beginning at the Ballymacelligott school, joining the other 13 from other years in Ms Cooke’s class.

“They all settled in very well. Some of them have siblings or cousins here in the school, which makes the transition easier in a multi-class. They are used to coming in for open days and science evenings. We usually invite them in beforehand for community walks so the parents have a chance to meet each other parents and the pupils can get to know their classmates before they start,” said Ms Cooke.

It makes for a great close-knit school as far as we could see when we visited. Scroll down for photos…

IT was an exciting week for children in Flemby NS, Caherleaheen NS and St John’s Parochial School in Ashe Street when we visited on Tuesday morning.

The junior infants had all been settling in well since starting this week and were getting to know each other and their teachers.

In Flemby NS, teacher Fiona Cooke said the six pupils were all very excited on the first day, but some had siblings in the same classroom so they settled down well.

Over in Caherleaheen NS, teacher Eveleen McCarthy said the 21 pupils there were very good on Monday and settled in in no time.

Meanwhile, in St John’s in Ashe Street, the five junior infants only started on Tuesday morning in Ms Fitzell’s class. Another new arrival was the Principal, Aoife Benton, who started her new job on Tuesday.
