Daly Calls For Kerry County Council To Act On Illegal Dumping

SINN Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly,  has urged the Government and Kerry County Council to take immediate action to deal with the scourge of illegal dumping.

Deputy Daly has written to Kerry County Council to urge them to move forward with CCTV as a means to stop this practice.

“For years now, illegal dumping has been a problem throughout the country,” said Deputy Daly. “It is particularly galling to see bags of rubbish dumped at roadsides and in scenic areas with no concern for the environment or the community that surrounds it.

“The only deterrent is to find the culprits and fine or prosecute them. Given these people are driving into the countryside or out of towns to dump their rubbish, CCTV will be an essential tool that county councils and an Garda Síochána can use to find and charge them.”

“Seeing mattresses, furniture and household waste dumped in remote spots and on private land is a disgrace when there is a number of waste collection companies to avail of.

“GDPR does not prohibit the use of CCTV, if anything the legislation introduced by the EU in 2018 clarifies the position regarding the processing of personal information.

“The Data Protection Commission has published clear guidance on the use of CCTV, including community CCTV, while the Law Society of Ireland has studied the use and states that it is acceptable as long as it is operated in accordance with GDPR.

“All community scheme run CCTV must be approved by The Garda Commissioner who operates a quarterly review to vet these and ensure they are compliant with both the Garda Síochána Act and the European Convention on Human Rights Act.

“There should be no ambiguity here, CCTV is perfectly acceptable and it can be introduced without further delay,” he said.

Illegal Dumping Near One Of Tralee’s Most Scenic Areas

Bags of rubbish dumped on the ditch at the side of the road leading down to the Lock Gates area.

EARLIER this week, Tralee received some disheartening news about it’s placing in the latest Irish Business Against Litter league placing, dropping to 33rd place and being deemed ‘moderately littered’, despite the huge efforts of Tidy Towns volunteers.

Councillors rightly said people had to step up and take responsibility for their actions, but a case of illegal dumping on Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, beyond Lohercannon on the road to the Lock Gates, shows that message is falling on the deaf ears of some individuals.

A local resident contacted us in disgust at what happened near his home close to one of the Tralee area’s renowned beauty spots which commands amazing views of Tralee Bay. A place where a public picnic area is to be developed by the Council.

The rubbish dumped at the side of the road.

Someone had dumped four large black bags of rubbish and a tyre on the ditch on the side of the road. The resident said it’s a common occurrence and he’s fed up with it.

The Council was informed and workers promptly called out to collect the rubbish, thankfully before the bags were burst by animals or birds. Sadly, this is not the only place on the outskirts of town this is happening.

Other spots like the bridge in Kerries West or near Scotia’s grave have been the scene of disgraceful illegal dumping in the past.

Tralee Municipal District councillors said this week that the public has a duty to report people they see littering, but incidents like this usually happen in the dead of night when nobody is around in isolated areas. It’s a sad reflection on some of the people in this town.

THERE was another case of disgraceful behaviour by people at the weekend when bags of rubbish were dumped over a bridge just outside town.

The incident happened on Saturday night/Sunday morning, with residents in the Kerries West area noticing the bags dumped over a small bridge in the area while out walking later on Sunday.

Most of the rubbish at the bridge – located about 200 metres from the Tralee-Fenit road – was taken away  by Kerry County Council on Tuesday morning, but a local resident sent on a photo to us which was taken on Sunday morning showing the full extent of the dumping.

When we went to the area on Tuesday morning there were still bottles and cans floating in the water, which itself looked to be polluted, thanks to the prevalence of discarded material which no doubt can cause harm to wildlife in the area and the environment.

Sadly, dumping is a regular problem in this scenic part of the Tralee environs. The Litter Warden is going through the bags to see if the culprits left anything which might identify them. Scroll down for photos taken on Tuesday morning…

ILLEGAL dumping by litter louts may result in the two bins located in Pearse Park being removed should the problem persist.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Norma Foley raised the issue at the Tralee Municipal District meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday where she asked that the matter of illegal dumping there be looked at a matter of urgency.

Council management said they would continue to closely monitor the area to catch the culprits, but if the problem persisted, they would have to remove the bins. They said this method was used previously in another part of town and proved successful in eliminating the dumping problem in that area.

“I’d be slow to take them away. Maybe we could have bins with a smaller access point to prevent domestic rubbish being dumped there,” said Cllr Foley, who welcomed closer monitoring of the area.

“Pearse Park is a hugely significant part of our town, it always does well in Tidy Towns and it is such a shame and a poor reflection on our town that it is being abused in this manner,” she said.

Broken furniture and rubbish dumped at Banna.

A READER sent us in these photos (below) from yesterday of what greeted her and her family on a trip to Banna yesterday.

Broken up furniture and rubbish littered the path near the sand dunes.

“Myself and my family went out to ‘Banna 3’ today for a walk in the beautiful sunshine and the view that greeted us was awful,” said the reader in an email to us last night.

“It looks like someone emptied a trailer load of rubbish just by the path up the sand dune. It’s disgraceful. I don’t know how these people can sleep at night I don’t know if anything can be done or if the Gardaí would have any hope of tracking these people down but surely this is not the view we want tourists to see when they come to this amazing beach,” she continued.

She wanted us to publish these photos so someone might recognise the items and these people might be caught.
