Garvey’s Super Valu Senior Football Championship Round 2 Kerins O’Rahillys 0-20 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-14

A great display when our backs were to the wall down to 14 men for most of the game with a tough game against Milltown/Castlemaine which went down to the wire and we advance to the next round of the Co. Championship against East Kerry next week end.

We had the opening score when Barry John Keane put 1 over the bar. Both sides traded points and it was 3 points each after 11 minutes our other 2 points put over by Barry John Keane and John O Connor. Then the sending off and we were down to 14 men for the rest of the game.

But with Tommy Walsh in great form at full forward and Con Barrett winning great possession at mid field we added further points from Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane, Giles O’Grady Dave McLoughlin and Cormac Coffey, to leave us ahead by 0-08 to Milltown/Castlemaine’s 0-04.

Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh added further points to leave us ahead by 0-10 to Milltown/Castlemaine’s 0-04. A high ball in went over the backs and was finished to the net which brought Milltown/Castlemaine back in the game.

They followed with 2 further points to leave the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10 to Milltown /Castlemaine 1-06.The second half saw the introduction of David Moran and Jack Savage for Kerins O’Rahillys. We had points from Tommy Walsh, Jack Savage and Barry John Keane and the teams were level on 4 occasions and we introduced Ross O’Callaghan, John Ferguson, Mitchell Donnelly and Tommy Begley for fresh legs such was the pace of the game and with 14 men the pressure was on from Milltown /Castlemaine who ran the ball at any opportunity.

Jack Savage was making a big impression at centre forward putting over 2 great points and with Barry John Keane also on song the teams were level at the 55th minute Kerins O’Rahillys 0-16 to Milltown/Castlemaine’s 1-13.

But with Tommy Walsh getting possession and being fouled the resultant frees put over by Jack Savage and a well taken point by Barry John Keane got us over the line and into the next round against East Kerry. This game is fixed for Saturday next the 3rd of October and will be played in Strand Road at 5pm. Extra time will be played in the event of a draw.

U14 TEAMS from Kerry, Dublin and Limerick will contest the Oaklands Daybreak Rose Cup Boys Football Tournament during the 2015 Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Now in its seventh year, this competition is a prestigious event on the GAA Juvenile calendar in Ireland and it will be organised by Coiste Trá Lí under the banner of the Rose of Tralee International Festival.

Plans for this year’s event are at an advanced stage but it will see 16 teams from Kerry, Dublin and Limerick battling it out for the Rose Cup and Rose Shield.

The Tralee area teams taking part will be, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Austin Stacks, Na Gaeil, Churchill and Ballymac. From further field coming to the tournament are South Liberties from Limerick and St Maurs from Dublin.

Other Kerry clubs include, Dr Crokes, Legion and An Gaeltacht so you can expect the standard of competition to be high. Indeed, last year’s Rose Cup champions, Austin Stacks, have gone on to sweep the boards in 2015, claiming a national Feile title. Na Gaeil meanwhile are the current holders of the Rose Shield.

Each team will play three games of 20 minutes and the top teams will compete for the Rose Cup and Rose Shield. These will be presented to the winning captains by the 2014 Rose of Tralee, Marie Walsh and the proprietor of Oaklands Daybreak on the Listowel Road, James O’Donoghue.

The matches will get underway on Saturday August 15 at two Tralee GAA venues – Kerins O’Rahilly’s and Na Gaeil.

County League: O’Rahilly’s Lose Again While Mitchels Continue To Pick Up Steam

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-10

Austin Stacks 0-13

Austin Stacks dropped points away to Milltown Castlemaine and lost pace in Division 1.

It’s never an easy task heading out to Milltown and it was made even tougher for Stacks who were missing nine of players from the side that lined out in the All-Ireland club semi-final last May.

The game saw both sides with periods of dominance, especially in the first half. David Mannix was again the top scorer for Stacks with five points, but only one from play.

Shane O’Callaghan’s four points from play was a real positive note, the forward looking like he was regaining some of the form that had people taking notice last year.

Next up for the Rock they will welcome the visit of Dingle in Connolly Park this Saturday evening.

Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10

Castleisland Desmonds 1-11

There was disappointment for Kerins O’Rahilly’s yet again as they continue their losing streak to four games in a row between league and championships.

The blues were left struggling, even more so without the injection of inter-county talent and will not look forward to going away without the Kerry players against Dr Crokes on Saturday.

A goal by Desmonds just after half time was enough to give them a cushion where they held onto the lead to the final whistle and gained themselves a valuable two Co League points.

The loss means that Strand Road edge ever closer to the middle of the pack and away from challenging for a league, crucially though the remain in touching distance of Austin Stacks a point ahead.

John Mitchels 5-11

Listowel Emmets 0-06

There is no doubt that the in-form team in town so far this year are John Mitchels.

Over the weekend they continued their unbeaten run in the county league with a 15 point shellacking of Listowel Emmets.  The win asserted their lead at the top of table, with quiet a decent supporting cast on their tail.

The star of the Mitchels show once again was forward Alan O’Donoghue, the Kerry junior firing 2-3 of his side’s impressive haul.

Next up, Mitchels can expect a sterner test from their second place rivals and senior championship club, Rathmore. That game will take place this Saturday evening down in Rathmore at 7:30.

The league is a fine thing, but championship is king, so the Mitchels will be fixing their sights on an intermediate championship against Spa Killarney soon. The date and time of that fixture still yet to be decided.

St Pats 1-12

Listry 4-05

St Pats sink to defeat against Listry, but all is not lost for what has been a promising year so far.

A hat trick from Listry stalwart Derry Aherne saw Listry claim the spoils in a high scoring encounter in sun drenched Blennerville on Sunday.

This was a game that could have gone either way but Listry had that extra bit of cuteness in the form of Man Of The match Derry Aherne who finished with a personal tally of 3-01.

Luck deserted the home side on this one, with the concession of soft goals and poor concentration at vital stages in the game not helping the cause.

Kieran Hurley who scored 1-8 was the home side’s best performer with Brendan Poff, David O’Callaghan and Adrian Greaney also playing well.

St Pat’s head south to play Skellig Rangers for their next test in the League this Saturday evening at 7:30pm.

Beaufort 2–11

Ballymacelligott 0–11

Ballymacelligott made the trip out to table-toppers Beaufort on Saturday evening, but despite their best efforts came home empty handed.

Despite some periods of dominance, Ballymac, were left having it all to do, trailing by 6 points going in at the break. Two first half goals by the home side proving to be a nice little cushion for them to sit on for the remainder of the match.

The second half saw both sides score 5 points each and although Ballymac tried their hardest to close the gap, 4 points was the closest they came to Beaufort.

Next, Ballymac will travel to Annascaul on Saturday evening next for Round 6 of the Co. League. Throw in time for this game is 7.30pm.

Na Gaeil 1-12

Annascaul 1-12

NA Gaeil faced Annascaul in the fifth round of the county league.

In near perfect conditions Na Gaeil started the stronger with early scores from Diarmaid Herlihy, two 45s from Mike Griffin and Jack Barry.

The vistitors settled and brought the game back to two points, with both sides trading scores up to half time. With the score going into the break Na Gaeil 0-7 Annascaul 0-5.

Annascaul started stronger in the second half racking up 01-04 to no score before the home side settled with scores coming from Mike Griffin and Diarmaid Herlihy.

Na Gaeil, with time running out and a point down, goaled to gain a two point advantage but two late points from Annascaul, the last at the final whistle, earned the visitors a deserved draw.

Na Gaeil will take the trip up to Brosna, this Saturday at 7:30.
