A LOCAL woman was honoured last night at the Ladies Gaelic Football Association National Volunteer Awards.
Shirley Doody of the Kerins O’Rahillys club was presented with the Club Committee Officer of the Year award at a ceremony in Croke Park, MC’d by Marty Morrissey.
Administrators, coaches and media were among those honoured across nine categories.
Shirley has been involved with the juvenile and ladies side of the club for a number of years now and is currently secretary and PRO for the ladies.
The girls made the trip to Currow, a rewarding one this evening, coming away with a hard-earned victory against a strong physical Currow side who gave it their all.
In rather wet conditions the Currow girls started the brighter and raced in to a 1-4 to 2-point lead. Clounmacons points coming from the boot of Erin Finucane who gave a fine display of kicking from dead ball and play ending up with an impressive 8-point tally on the night.
Clounmacon were to get back into the game with an expertly soccer style shot from Laura Stack who apart from her goal but in a sterlings night work.
Further scores from the boot of Finucane were to leave the half time score 1-4 apiece. On the resumption the girls have had tended to start the second half on top and points again from Finucane and Marie Kennelly had the girls three in front.
Midway through the half a break away effort saw Currow strike for a goal to level proceedings up again, but the girls showed plenty of character from the kick out to move the ball up the field for a superb effort from Marie Kennelly to raise the white flag.
Also points from Sheila Moore, Finucane and the impressive Grainne Stack Mulvihill saw the girls race into a three-point lead. A lead they were to hold onto the finish. Despite some Currow pressure, solid goalkeeping from Marie Flaherty, ably assisted by her backs held firm to secure the final spot.
All girls played well on the night, but special mention must go to Ornaith Wall who had a tremendous game.
The club also would like to wish Maggie O’Flaherty all the best on her upcoming voyage and hopefully won’t be too long before we see her back in the black and amber again.
