Kerry Animal Welfare Groups Receive Government Funding

LOCAL animal welfare groups received a boost yesterday when it was announced they would get funding from the Department of Agriculture.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, announced funding awards of €2,460,500 to 137 animal welfare organisations throughout the country involved in protecting animal welfare. The payments will be made with immediate effect.

Kerry SPCA in Tralee will get €18,000 in funding, €5,000 for Animal Help Net Kerry, €5,000 for Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society (KLAWS), the Homes for Unwanted Greyhounds in Killarney will get €4,000, while  The Daisy Fund in Tralee is to receive €2,000.

Minister Creed said that “these organisations contribute greatly to protecting animals, by providing sanctuary for in many instances surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals and the funding being awarded is evidence of my Department’s on-going commitment in the area of animal welfare and is a recognition of the important role played by these organisations in safeguarding animals particularly pet and companion animals’.

The Minister, in acknowledging the work of the welfare organisations took the opportunity to thank their staff and volunteers, ‘I wish to give a special mention also to the many volunteers and supporters involved with these organisations for their ongoing commitment to animal welfare”.

THE glory days of Nottingham Forest may be in the past, but their fans in Kerry and Munster did the club proud with a recent fundraiser.

The Munster Forest supporters club ran a dinner dance to mark its 10 year anniversary and the 150th anniversary of the English soccer club.

The event was held in The Manor Inn Killorglin on Saturday, June 18 and raised over €3,000 for two organisations, the KSPCA and Recovery Haven.

“We had Colin Barrett who played in the European Cup winning team in 1979-80 and his wife and Brendan Moloney from Beaufort who played with Forest,” said Mike Hurley from Munster Forest.

There was also 25 people from Nottingham who came over for the event. Mike and Gearoid Lynch have been going to matches over there for the past 25 years and have built up strong friendships over the years.

They were delighted to raise funds for the two groups.

The cheques – €1,538 each – were handed over to the two groups at the Recovery Haven in Killerisk on Sunday morning.
