NATIONAL Learning Network Tralee is Kerry’s only specialist training provider delivering a range of free QQI and City and Guilds courses to people with additional support needs.

If you need extra learning support, if you have had an accident, illness or injury, have a disability or mental health difficulty then we can help.

All courses are person centered where Instructors will encourage and support students on their journey of self-development, providing the confidence to pursue a career pathway to employment or progress on to further education at your own pace. Whatever your interests, we have the training programme for you!

Courses include I.T. by Blended Learning, Employer Based Training (including Childcare), Sport and Recreation, Retail Skills, Catering, Focus Mental Wellness Programme, Construction Skills, Applied Information Technology and Introductory Training Skills.

NLN Tralee assists students to fulfil their own personal goals, whether this is to get a qualification or a job, go on to further education or to simply work on personal development.

We work closely with our local community and have built a network of business and industry partners, including many local employers who offer our learners the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and in-work placements.

Courses can be accessed in a variety of ways: in your local centre, with a local employer; or even from the comfort of your own home.

All National Learning Network training programmes are funded through Kerry Education and Training Board or the Health Service Executive and therefore most students receive an allowance for participation.

Two NLN Students Win Medals At Event In Dublin

TWO catering and culinary skills students at the National Learning Network centre in Clash were celebrating after winning medals at an event in Dublin last week.

Erin Quirke from Ballyseedy and Anne Marie Fealey from Killorglin won bronze medals at the international Chef Ireland competition, which took place at the City West  conference in Dublin last week.

Anne Marie and Erin carried on a proud tradition of NLN students winning medals in this competition. They both won in the open hot dessert category preparing their dishes in front of a live audience.

Commenting on both students success, Tom Hardiman, catering and culinary skills instructor with National Learning Network in Tralee said, “We are so proud of Anne Marie and Erin. They both worked so hard on creating their dishes and practicing them. They are both extremely talented and have a passion for cooking.”

Anne Marie said; “I’m thrilled to bits with the achievement and I’ve practised a lot to get to this position.”

Erin also said she was delighted with the medal, but this wasn’t her first win: “I was in one competition before this at the county fair where I got two firsts, two seconds and an honourable mention. I got the passion for cooking from my nan Eileen.”

The Chef Ireland is an international three-day culinary competition that rewards practical professional cookery and restaurant services.

The competition which is co-ordinated by the Panel of Chefs of Ireland and run under the World Association of Cooks Societies is designed to showcase the creativity, skill and imagination of Ireland’s chefs.

National Learning Network Tralee Group Enjoys Finnish Adventure

THERE was great excitement among two Kerry groups last week as they departed for Tampere in Finland on an Erasmus Plus Exchange programme.

A group of 13 students and four staff from National Learning Network Tralee along with a smaller youth group and leaders from South West Kerry Family Resource Centre in Cahersiveen departed on Tuesday, October 8 for an eight day trip which saw the group visit the Verstas organisation in Tampere followed by three days of activities in the Marttinnen Youth Centre.

The theme of the trip was “Promoting Social Inclusion” and the group’s aim to exchange ideas on how best to ensure that young people of all abilities can be included in their communities.

This is the second part of an exchange organised by South West Kerry Family Resource Centre in Cahersiveen which saw a group from Tampere visit South Kerry in May 2018 where the theme was ‘Isolation’.

Such was the success of the visit that an exchange trip was agreed. Erasmus Plus is a European Union programme that supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

The aim of the programme is to develop new ways to support inclusion, diversity, equality, gender-balance and non-discrimination.

THE National Learning Network (Rehab Group) in Clash held their Certification Day on Friday at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

There were approximately 150 students receiving  QQI – National Framework of Qualifications and also the NPLQ – National Pool Lifeguard Qualifications.

NLN Centre Receives €3,000 After Fashion Fundraiser

THE National Learning Network in Tralee received a cheque for €3,000 on Friday last thanks to a fashion show back in October.

Fiona Hyde, whose son Dylan is a trainee there, helped organise the annual fundraiser in Sol y Sombra and some of the proceeds now go the facility in Clash.

“I want to thank the organisers of the Killorglin Fashion Show on behalf of all at the National Learning Network here and in particular, Fiona Hyde,” said Fiona Keogh, Area Manager NLN. ”

“Dylan is a participant on his first year of the School Leavers programme.It’s a programme funded by the HSE and we have a number of young learners who come from mainstream and special education needs schools to our three year programme for health and social gain.”

NLN in Kerry provides a range of free courses to people who have had an accident, illness, injury or have a disability and extra support needs.

The courses are tailored to each student’s needs, to help them to build their confidence while getting practical job-seeking skills to help them get a job or go on to further training.

National Learning Network Tralee Wins National Award

THE Sporting Chance course at National Learning Network in Tralee was announced as winners of the Nutramino Inclusive Health and Fitness Award at a ceremony in the Mansion House in Dublin earlier this month.

The award recognises the work students from the Sporting Chance course have been doing in the area of inclusive sport, physical activity and exercise.

This is the inaugural year of the awards which recognise the accomplishments of facilities, individuals and programmes from across the fitness and leisure industry throughout Ireland.

As part of their course, Sporting Chance students organise a number of sport and physical activity programmes for children and adults of all abilities.

Among these are an athletics coaching programme with children from Nano Nagle school in Listowel; A swimming programme with children from the autism unit in Killahan National School; an Easter activities camp with teenagers from Kerry Intervention Disability Services; Activity sessions with adults from Rehabcare in Blennerville; Soccer coaching with 3rd and 4th class students at Tralee CBS and providing personal training and fitness classes for students from other courses within National Learning Network.

A number of students have volunteered on Camp Abilities, a residential sports camp for children with vision impairments which takes place in Kerry each Easter and the group have also organised sports days for primary schools in Killarney and Limerick.

Over 200 people attended the ceremony which was hosted by Vogue Williams. Students James Lyons and Joanne Kelly represented the course in Dublin and accepted the award on behalf of all the students.

Sporting Chance is a QQI Level 4 and 5 course which provides qualifications and training for those interested in pursuing a career in the sport, recreation and fitness sector.

The course is open to jobseekers, the unemployed or to anyone who may be out of work due to health reasons. In the coming months, Sporting Chance students will be hosting a summer activities camp for Kerry Intervention Services and will be assisting at the FAI Munster Primary Schools Finals.

Four Return To NLN Centre In Tralee With Chef Ireland Medals

FOUR students from the National Learning Network centre in Tralee were among the medals at the  prestigious Chef Ireland Competition held recently.

The NLN Kerry Learners won four Bronze Medals at the event in the City West Conference Hotel in Dublin on Tuesday last.

Craig Coady, Liam O’Brien, Imelda O’Reilly, CarrieAnn O’Connor other catering  students  and their Instructors Tom Hardiman, Helen Egan & Frances Griffin travelled to the competition which had participants from all over Ireland and Europe taking part.

The Learners were awarded the Bronze Medals in two categories Irish Pork Junior Class & Hot Dessert Open Class.

Imelda was also announced as the overall winner in the Hot Dessert Open Class competition.

“We’re very proud of all the students who have enjoyed this fantastic success and the work by Helen and Frances has been rewarded too. We’re very happy,” said Tom Hardiman.

Chef Ireland is an interactive two day Culinary Competition that rewards practical professional cookery & restaurant services.

The Competition is co ordinated by the Panel of Chefs of Ireland and is designed to showcase the creativity, skill & imagination of Irelands Chefs.

Cllr Jim Finucane, Chairman of the Kerry ETB Board, was at the centre in Clash to congratulate the medal winners on Thursday.
