Photos: Skyfest 2014 Wows Onlookers All Over Town

IF you happened to be driving around town during Sunday afternoon you may have spied people craning their necks to the skies, to take in what has now become a feature of the festival, the Skyfest.

Though it took a while to kick off – because of some blustery weather – when it did take off (sorry!) it had everyone’s full attention.

This year the airshow made the switch over from the Wetlands area to fly over the main stage in Denny Street. The move came about so that the people who were watching the Sunday afternoon parade in town could stay where they were and get a great view of the air display.

A host of different aircraft took part with some performing acrobatic to enjoyment of the crowd, particularly by the five strong Raven Display team from the UK.

Festival Countdown: Look To The Skies This Sunday!

2014 Advert

The Skyfest is always an amazing sight on the Sunday of the Festival. It starts at 4pm.

ONE of the highlights of the Rose of Tralee festival for the past few years has been the spectacular Skyfest on Sunday and this year promises to be no different.

SkyFest 2014 returns with a super line-up and this year organisers have made the viewing experience even better to allow spectators view the events in town including the Sunday Parade and Garda Band on Denny Street and allowing the public to browse the festival food and craft market, without having to leave the town centre.

They have accomplished this by moving the display axis into the town centre.

The display will start at 4pm and is best viewed from Denny Street. Eddie Goggins, a dentist from Dublin – who came third in the World Aerobatic Championships in 2008 is returning once again this year but in his new aircraft, a CAP 231, designed for competition aerobatics.

With a roll rate of 420° per second and a climb rate of nearly 3,300 feet per minute, the CAP-232 is still well suited for the aerobatic circuit. It can reach a maximum speed of 205mph.

The Garda Air Support unit will be on the ground in the Town Park during the air display, subject to availability.

Next up for the fourth year in a row is the Irish Coast Guard’s Shannon based Sikorsky S92 helicopter who will carry out a fly by over the town park and, if available, will also land in the town park..look out for the waving winchman!

Finally, the highlight of the air display will be the Raven Display Team from the UK. The five ship formation team formed in 2014 and although in some senses they are differing characters, the Team Raven pilots (and indeed support crew) share the same professionalism, drive, enthusiasm and passion for aviation and display flying.

The event is best viewed from Denny Street where the commentary etc. will take place.

Get in early for the best vantage point. The event will start immediately after the Garda Band performance.
