National competition at that age is carried out on a pairs basis, so to have two athletes capable of that level of performance in the same club is rare, especially in disciplines as fiercely competitive as Sprint and Long Jump.
Sadie and Aria dominated both their events, with 2 PBs in the Long Jump seeing them with a combined total of 6.73m and almost a metre clear of second place, while they were also comfortable winners in the sprint by 0.5 seconds.
At Masters level earlier this month, demonstrating that age is no barrier, Patsy O’Connor was competing on the national stage for the first time in the over 65 category.
Emulating the younger cohort, Patsy also came home with double national gold, including a new national record in the Discus of 40.85 metres. Patsy now holds the national records for both events at the over 55, 60 and 65 categories.
Tralee Harriers are currently in the process of developing their club grounds, with the hope that the laying of the tartan running track would be completed next year.
Harriers President Martin Fitzgerald, highlighted that a significant amount of fundraising is required to complete this work so as to provide the requisite facilities for the clubs athletes to continue to perform at such a high level Nationally. The club will be launching a fundraising initiative within the coming weeks.
MEMBERS of Tralee Harriers gathered at their training grounds off the Dan Spring Road last night to officially turn on their new floodlights at the track.
They were joined by special guest Mayor of Tralee Norma Foley, longtime supporters and sponsors of the Tralee Marathon series which is funding developments at the grounds.
“The lights have been sponsored by the fundraising we do for the Tralee Marathon,” said Paul Griffin, Tralee Harriers PRO, who explained what the club has planned on the grounds in the coming years.
Continued below…
“Tralee Harriers hosts the marathon, Valentine’s Run and Rose 10k events. These fundraise for the developments at the grounds here. The first instalment of money has paid for the lights and we can start development of a 4x400m training track. Soon we’ll have a long jump lane and pit, a high jump area, shot, discus and hammer and eventually, as part of our five year plan, a clubhouse in the corner of the grounds,” said Paul.
The track lanes are planned to be in place by the end of 2018 with the addition of the high jump and additional lane in early 2019. These will be funded by the marathon income as well as grants and loans.
There is also a plan for an astroturf lane on the outside of the lights to facilitate people who want to do ‘Couch To 5k’ and to introduce free-weights like they have in parks to be used by the whole community.
Paul said the idea is that the entire Dan Spring Road area will be a sports hub with the tennis club, Aquadome, astroturf pitch at CBS and their own facility.
Exciting times then for the club which is gearing up for the marathon in three weeks time.

2. U9-U13 Munsters

The standard was very high this year with some great performances over the two days. 24 athletes attended the championships with all of them performing very well despite the rain and wind that blighted the two days.
It was two days of some very big highs, an odd low moment but most of all great fun, lots of smiling, laughing, gritted teeth, joys of new pbs, bottle flipping, determined running, short lived disappointments, spiked ankles and medicine made from spittle, chocolate covered faces, gammy legs (mine), fighting for the line, hoarse voices, followed by questionable looks from other attendees at our cheering, (mine again) delight at friends achievements, hugs and high fives and The Muppets wanting to stay U14 for a few years.

Radio Kerry’s Full Breakfast and Tralee Harriers AC’s Javelin Challenge
Elaine Kinsella and Andrew Morrissey of Kerry’s Full Breakfast took on the Tralee Harriers AC Javelin Challenge on Tuesday evening last.
After some very enthusiastic and comedic coaching by our National Masters Champion and throws Coach Patsy O’Connor, Elaine and Andrew took on brothers Daragh (13) and Cathal (11) Murphy.
First two rounds were obstacle challenges where they all had to throw the javelins through Hoops set at different distances from the throwing line.
The final round consisted of normal free throw with both Andrew and Elaine hitting the late teens and very early 20’s Daragh produced 3 throws in mid it late 20’s with Cathal stealing the show with a massive 31.40 and a new PB.
We would like to thank the Dynamic Duo from Kerry’s Full Breakfast, for coming down and highlighting the good work Tralee Harriers does with athletics and the children in the Tralee area. They really got stuck in and gave it their all, though sadly were put to shame by an 11yr old. (12 tomorrow, Happy Birthday Cathal)
Thank you to everyone who helped out on the evening and to all the kids and parents who cheered on the 4 contestants
If you would like to come down and have an athletics challenge, please contact any of the coaches and we will be delighted to have any of your companies, businesses and offices organise a challenge. Great for team building and getting some motivation back into the work place.
See Tralee Harriers AC and Radio Kerry’s Facebook page for the video.
Any questions please contact Paul on 083-4201475

It was a busy few weeks for Tralee Harriers athletes with open sports for the U9-U16 and Munster Championships for Juniors (U17-20) and U 23’s as well as the Juvenile Pentathlons held in Waterford.
Open sports were held in Castleisland hosted by Gneeveguilla AC. There was a huge turn from the club with many competing at their first event. The day was bright and a lot of fun was had with many of the athletes bringing home well deserved trophies. Tralee Harriers would like to extend our thanks to Gneeveguilla AC on hold a great event, and look forward to attending again next year.
Leevale AC held their open sports in CIT track in Cork City. Only one athlete attended this event and preformed well. Setting new bench marks for the coming Track and Field outdoor season.
Waterford RSC hosted the Munster Junior, U23’s and the Juvenile Pentathlons. This event was not as supported by athletes as in previous years and although the club did well there could have been a better turn out.
Results of the above events are listed below.
1. Tralee Harriers offer a huge well done to Derek Griffin; who competed in the London Marathon. It is a gruelling event, Derek was in fine form throughout the race but the last few miles took it out of him and despite having a stitch he keep going finishing the race in 2.43.59. Derek was the 15th Irish person home on the day
Superb running from this up and coming senior athlete, there is certainly much more to come from Derek this year.
2. Training turns up a few notches this week with Munsters only 5 weeks away. Relay trails will commence next Thursday 4th May. All athletes that would like to make a Munster relay Team. Please give their names to Linda and Paul at coming sessions.
3. U9-U13 Munsters is held on the 3rd / 4th June in Ennis Co. Clare. And U14 to U19 is on the 17th / 18thJune in CIT Cork.
4. Works resume on the grounds in the coming weeks, finishing off the flood lights and completion of the 4 lane 100m and long jump run ups. This is a welcome announcement with the closure of the track in Castleisland for resurfacing.
5. Tralee Harriers were recipients of a cheque of €146.00 from Tesco as part of their Local Community Fund. These monies will go some way to helping to replace some of the much needed equipment for both club training and the Primary Schools Links Programme. Thank you to all in Tesco for the generous cheque.

He was third in the 100m Hurdles (I recon he was second but I am slightly biased), he was also third in the Javelin.
He finished 4th in the High Jump.
He is improving all the time and the coming season is looking bright for him.
The Gneeveguilla open sports was held in An Riocht Today..There was a great turnout from the club with over 40 athletes competing. Day 3 of the Irish Life Health National Indoor Juvenile Championships took place in Athlone last Saturday and it proved to be a thrilling event with national records and surprise wins from some of the nations up and coming under age athletes.
Rachel Bowler was competing in the U19 Triple Jump. After last weekend’s Silver in the Long jump, she was hopeful of another medal. The competition started well for Rachel, but following her fourth jump she resigned from the competition following an injury to her ankle but her opening jumps and class in this event earned her the silver medal. We wish Rachel well in her recovery.
Orla O’Reilly was back in action again this week in the U18 200m. Orla earned a new pb in the 60m last weekend and she had her mind set on a pb of 26.99 for this event. Orla missed out on a place in the final by 0.03secs and having run a time of 26.36 well below her estimated time. Well done Orla
Cillian Griffin also returned to Athlone this weekend. After two 4th placings last weekend in the 60m and Long Jump, and the 200m being his least favoured event he was hoping to get a good time. Cillian was outside the medals after making it to the final 6 in the U16 200m having set a new pb in the heats in a time of 24.19 taking over a second off his past time.
Best of luck to all club athletes who are taking part in the Kerry Colleges Track and Field Championship in Castleisland on Thursday 6th. If any parents are free on the day and want to come out and help with the running of the event the organisers would be very grateful.

The Club would like to offer its sincere sympathy to coach Gina Barrett and her family on the sudden passing of her brother Gerry Clifford RIP.

Patsy shows young guns, 60 yr olds can break national records too
Patsy O’Connor represented Tralee Harriers at The Irish Life Health Master National Indoor Championships on Sunday 5th of March in Athlone. This is a very competitive event and provided another enjoyable spectacle and age defying performances at the Athlone International Arena.
Patsy has been a stable member of Tralee Harriers for many many years as well as being a permanent fixture on the Master Track and Field Circuit for more years than he would care to admit, though he’d only say he’s in 30’s.
As we know he may act like a young buck, he uses his years of training and competing to help the up and coming Kerry athletes develop their skills as a coach with Tralee Harriers and the Kerry Athletic Development Squads. Patsy took part in the over 60 Shot Put and with his first throw set a new National record in the event and age group, breaking the old record of 12.12m with his throw of 13.85m.
Well done to Patsy from all your young throwers and the club.
The Kerry Athletics yearly awards took place on Saturday and 7 club members received awards on the night. It was a fantastic night and all that attended had a fantastic time.

Three Tralee Harriers athletes competed in the Irish Life Health National Senior Indoor Championship at the new The Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Dublin last weekend.

Solange Diogo followed Aoibheann to the podium by taking a bronze in the Triple Jump 11.24m. This was only just .04cm shy of a silver medal.
Both girls are now ranked 3rd in the national rankings, in the respective jumps so great work.
