TALKS are already taking place between the Council and Tralee Chamber about how they can improve and build on the success of the Christmas markets at the Island of Geese in December.

Sinn Féin Cllr Cathal Foley had a motion before the meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors on Thursday, requesting that the Council, alongside Tralee Chamber Alliance, should make this an annual event and look to improve on it for future years.

He said it was like something you would see in northern Europe, with a wonderful atmosphere over the two days in early December. Cllr Foley said he would like to see it moved closer to Christmas next year and that it also showcased the Island of Geese being used for the right purpose.

Mayor Mikey Sheehy said there was a fantastic atmosphere despite the challenging weather conditions on both nights, but Council staff were on hand to help out and keep people safe.

He also said it was mentioned to him that the markets should have been extended to other weekends and he hoped this will be looked at for next year.

In reply, the Council said Tralee’s Christmas Market along with entire Christmas Programme of events was a tremendous success and the feedback from businesses, the people of Tralee and the wider public has been very positive.

They said Tralee Municipal District are already discussing plans with Tralee Chamber Alliance and the local business community for next Christmas to build and expand on the success of the first Christmas market at the Island of Geese.

However, it is subject to funding availability and will be discussed as part of the Community Support Fund priorities for the year.
