Tim Horgan Presented With The Kerry Heritage Award

THE Kerry Heritage Award, which is presented each year by the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, has been awarded for 2023 to Kerry historian and author, Tim Horgan.

The presentation to the author of several books on the revolutionary period in Kerry was made at a special ceremony at the Rose Hotel in Tralee on Sunday afternoon.

The Kerry Heritage Award is presented annually by the Society to recognise individuals who have contributed significantly to the Society or to heritage and history in Kerry.

Speaking at the event on Sunday, the President of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Tony Bergin said: “We are delighted to be recognising a long term Society member, Dr Tim Horgan this year. He has contributed significantly to Kerry history through his research, lectures and books on numerous topics around the War of Independence and Civil War in County Kerry.”

Tim Horgan is a native of Tralee and a past pupil of CBS ‘The Green’ Tralee. He graduated from UCD medical school in 1986.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He works as an ophthalmologist in University Hospital Kerry.

Dr Horgan is also a historian with a specialist interest in the revolutionary period in County Kerry. He has had four books published in this field: The Men Will Talk to Me – Kerry interviews of Ernie O’Malley (Mercier, Cork, 2012), Dying for The Cause (Mercier, Cork, 2015) and Fighting for The Cause (Mercier, Cork, 2018) as well The Stones Still Speak – The Patriot Graves of Killarney’s New Cemetery (2022).

Tim has recently completed a book on the influence of eye diseases on the cultural and political history of Ireland.

A member of the National Graves Association, he is involved in the care of County Kerry’s patriotic monuments and graves. Tim Horgan is married to Ruth, has four children and lives in Ballymacelligott.
