THE town lost a great sportsman this morning when Bruddy Burrows passed away at Kerry General Hospital following a brave battle with illness.

Bruddy and his brother Seanie are the only brothers in history to win back to back All Ireland minor football medals with Kerry when they were trained by Dr Jim Brosnan in 1962-63.

Bruddy won two senior county championship medals with his club John Mitchels, but it was on the basketball stage where he excelled too, playing with Ireland on 22 occasions and captaining the side once.

Weeshie Fogarty, writing on his Terrace Talk Facebook page this morning, said: “If he had pursued his football career instead of basketball he would definitely have become one of the great Kerry midfielders in my opinion. A quietly spoken courteous person, being in his company talking sport was special. We will miss him so much.”

He is survived by his wife Margret, sons Alan and David and daughter Paula, sisters and brother and extended family.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
