Tralee Art Group To Hold Exhibition To Celebrate Local Oyster Fishing

TRALEE Art Group will open their upcoming exhibition on Friday, October 20, at the Parish Centre, Fenit (V92 Y8DW).

‘Our World, Our Oyster’ celebrates Oyster Fishing in Tralee Bay, Fenit. Many fishermen and women from Fenit and surrounding areas take part in this seasonal oyster fishery, operating generally from October to December. It is closely regulated to ensure future sustainability.

Guided by local artist, Rebekah Wall, over the last year, a body of work has been created by ten artists, providing a social commentary on a not very well known local industry which supports families in the area.

“Becoming more aware of the Flat Bed Oyster (also known as the Native Irish Oyster) and this local community enterprise, has helped the us learn more about a sustainable industry on our doorstep and has been an inspiration,” said Ber Earley of Tralee Art Group.

Children from 5th and 6th class in St. Brendan’s local National school worked with some Tralee Art Group members in a Look and Respond Workshop. This resulted in the children creating collaborative, responsive pieces which will also be on display.

The exhibition consists of large and small works, including paintings, video, installations, textile works, found objects etc.

All ages are welcome to this community orientated, social commentary on a long established tradition. There will be refreshments and music by local musicians.

Opening on Friday, October 20th in the Parish Hall, Fenit, V92 Y8DW, it will be open daily, Monday to Sunday, at 10am-12 noon and 2pm -4pm until Sunday Nov 5th.
