Kerry Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal Foley has offered €1000 as a reward for information leading to the prosecution of those that set fire to Killarney National Park.

Earlier this year, Tralee Municipal District Cllr Foley requested Kerry County Council to offer rewards for information on wild fires taking place throughout Kerry.

“Kerry County Council informed me that they could not do so. I have now taken it upon myself to offer €1000 as reward for any information that leads to a successful prosecution against those that lit this most recent illegal fire in Killarney National Park.”

“Killarney National Park belongs to all of us and is part of our heritage. Any of us lucky enough to call Kerry our home feel especially connected to our National Park. It draws visitors from near and far to see some of our last remaining wild areas. Those that light these fires year in year out have no respect for our heritage and must be confronted with every tool available.”

“Someone out there knows who set this devastating fire and I would appeal to them to report these people to the authorities. For far too long a blind eye has been turned despite the best efforts of some to tackle this criminality. The government and the EU must grasp the nettle and resolve the land management of our upland areas. The system in place at present is beyond sustainable and must be changed.”

“These fires damage our counties reputation far beyond the boundaries of Kerry and wipe out the delicate biodiversity in the Park. Thousands of ground nesting birds and other wildlife are severely impacted by these annual occurrences. The fires also have a knock on effect on water and air quality on the thousands of people living close by”.

  1. Fair play to Cllr Foley for taking this important step! Myself and others are delighted to hear that this kind of effort is being taken to help do something about the appalling illegal fires that are set every year.
