A TRALEE woman is preparing to head off to the United States to take part in a World Championship event.

Éidín Dowling from Oakpark is off to the ICF Kayak Freestyle World Championships in Columbus Georgia USA from October 9-14.

The 23 year old former Mercy Mounthawk student was selected for the Irish team in Spring and has been training hard ever since. She began kayaking four years ago when she started college at the University of Limerick.

“After attending a clubs and society recruitment drive I was encouraged to sign up for the kayak club and haven’t looked back since,” she said.

“Freestyle kayaking fascinated me every since I started so I decided to give it a go. After training every day, last year I was selected to represent Ireland at the Nottingham ICF Freestyle World championships which was an unforgettable experience,” said Éidín, daughter of Evelyn and Eddie Dowling.

Éidín said she is honoured to have the opportunity to represent her country again, but it’s an expensive business so she set up a gofundme page in the hope people might make a small contribution to help get her to the US.

“Freestyle kayaking is a self-funded sport which means athletes are left to find the funds to attend competitions at every level. I would appreciate any donation of any sort to help me achieve my dreams of getting to this year’s world championships!” said Eidín.
