A TRALEE man played his part on the big stage of European football in helping his UCD side advance to the next round of the Europa League as they defeated F91 Dudelange on away goals last night.
Gary O’Neill, who is originally from Caherslee, is an ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers and Port Vale FC player who is now putting his undoubted talent to good use with his UCD exploits.
The former Kingdom Boys/Tralee Dynamos player was playing in the first round qualifier of the European competition in Luxembourg where, despite losing 2-1 on the night, he and his teammates did enough to progress with a 2-2 draw on aggregate.
The students went down to 10 men early in the first half, so it was a dogged and determined performance from the Irish team as they held on for what will go down as a famous night in the team’s history.
Gary and UCD will no doubt have their work cut out for them again in the next round of qualifiers taking place later this summer.
The Tralee man took to social media after to match to share his understandable delight.
Wow! Unbelievable feeling, down to 10 men for 65 minutes, through the next round on away goals! Made history! Best feeling of my life⚽️🔵🙌
