Watch Opera Live From The Met At Tralee Omniplex This Saturday

OPERA fans are in for a treat this Saturday evening as ‘The Met: Live in HD’ new season kicks off  with Cherubini’s thrilling opera ‘Medea’ being screened in Tralee Omniplex at 5:55pm.

Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky stars as the mythic sorceress Medea, who will stop at nothing in her quest for vengeance, taking on the tour-de-force role made famous by Maria Callas.

In an acclaimed production by David McVicar, tenor Matthew Polenzani plays Medea’s husband, Giasone (Jason the Argonaut); soprano Janai Brugger as the rival for his love, Glauce; bass Michele Pertusi as Glauce’s father, Creonte, the King of Corinth; and mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Neris, Medea’s confidante.  Carlo Rizzi conducts and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato will host the live transmission.

The 2022–23 Live in HD season will also include popular favourites like Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’, Giordano’s ‘Fedora’, Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’, Verdi’s ‘Falstaff’, Strauss’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ (with soprano Lise Davidsen and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the Marschallin and Octavian), two Mozart operas conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘Die Zauberflöte’ together with two new operas Kevin Puts’s ‘The Hours’ (starring the powerhouse trio of soprano Renée Fleming, mezzo- soprano Joyce DiDonato, and soprano Kelli O’Hara) and Terence Blanchard’s opera, ‘Champion’ based on the boxer Emile Griffith.
