TRALEE Chamber Alliance and Cara Credit Union have announced the winners of the ‘Ag Siopadóireacht le Gaelainn’ initiative, an effort to promote the Irish language among Tralee’s youth during the Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations.

The initiative saw local retailers teaming up with primary schools and aimed to embed the Irish language into the daily lives of Tralee’s young residents.

By encouraging students to use Irish when engaging with participating local shops and businesses, the initiative sought to create a vibrant, bilingual community.

To celebrate the success of this initiative, three local primary schools were awarded gift vouchers to purchase art and craft supplies. These schools demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm and commitment to using the Irish language throughout the week-long celebration.

The winners are St. John’s Parochial School, Ardfert National School and Scoil Eoin Balloonagh.

Tralee Chamber Alliance’s CEO, Colette O’ Connor, expressed pride in the community’s response to the initiative.

“A key part of this promotion is highlighting the fantastic community and collaborative spirit that is exceptionally strong here in North Kerry. Business and community come together throughout the year on a number of projects.

“For Seachtain na Gaeilge this year, we really wanted to highlight Tralee’s status as a Gaeltacht Service town. Through our Education Steering Committee Sub Group, which includes representation from MTU, Kerry College, and Cara Credit Union, we explored ways to involve the area’s fantastic primary schools with local businesses.”

Cara Credit Union, the Community Partner of Tralee Chamber, committed to fund the initiative, and it was fantastic to see local businesses and the schools across Tralee and the wider North Kerry area, including Ardfert, participate in it.”

Cara Credit Union’s Marketing Manager, Siobhán Donnelly, said: “We are thrilled to support this initiative, which not only fosters a love for the Irish language but also strengthens community ties. Congratulations to the winning schools and a heartfelt thank you to Tralee Chamber Alliance and  all participating retailers for their enthusiastic support.”
