You wouldn’t know it considering that we are going through the storm alphabet like there is no tomorrow. When we got to Gertrude I decided that I want the job of choosing those names. All I am saying is that if we ever get to Z, it better be called Zoë.
I talk a lot about positivity on here, but I guess it gets a little bit harder when you are faced with grey morning after grey morning. It’s okay to admit that it is hard to pursue that ‘glass half full’ attitude after such a horrible winter, and summer really, if we are all being honest with ourselves.
I think Irish people as a whole are obsessed with the weather. You can’t deny it. It’s the first topic of small talk conversation; no matter what you are talking about, any good home grown Irish person can change the topic to weather.
It’s oddly fascinating now that you think about it. Entire news programmes can be dedicated to it. So I guess it only makes sense that when the weather starts to let us down, and we can no longer put a new angle on the incessant rainfall, that we start to get a little sad about it.
That is completely okay to admit.
Another thing about the Irish people, is that we tend to pretend that everything is okay all the time. Unless you are flipping Dora the Explorer, I can guarantee you, that’s not true.
Yet people continue to insist that there lives purely consist of rainbows and ponies.
People ask you how you are and you have to come up with some elaborate story to prove that you actually have your life together. It’s turn into some sort of messed up competition to see who is currently living the better life. Maybe I don’t expect people to be totally honest with each other in these random small talk conversations, but maybe we should be honest with ourselves.
(I know we got pretty deep there, grab your snorkel everyone)
If your current ‘down in the dumps’ attitude does not have to do with the weather, and in fact you can’t come up with any such reason why you are sad at this current moment in time, that’s completely okay too.
We’re only human. You can actually have that idyllic Disney Channel-esque lifestyle and still feel like rubbish. There is no reason or explanation for it, but it’s okay to admit that it happens. It’s okay to wallow in it for a little while before picking yourself back up again.
But just remember that you can pick yourself back up. No matter how hard it seems to fight through the wind and the rain every day of the week, you can do it.
Just think of it like this, if Teresa Mannion can do it, so can you.
I would still like a little sunshine though…
Until Next Week x
