NATIONAL Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today hosted an event in the Black Valley in Kerry to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband in the remote location.

Works to connect the Black Valley are almost complete with most homes and farms in the area able to connect to high-speed fibre broadband.

The remaining build works for a small number of premises in the most remote parts of the valley are set to be completed in the coming months.

Continued below…

.

Black Valley was famously one of the last regions in Ireland to be connected to the electricity grid in 1977.

The completion of these works will mean that residents in the area will have the same access to 1 Gigabit, reliable broadband as any of the almost 290,000 premises that NBI has passed across the country.

Works to connect the Black Valley involved unique challenges with NBI consulting with government officials, conservationists and local residents to ensure that the fibre rollout to the valley caused minimum disruption or impact to the natural beauty and heritage of the region.

Minister of State Ossian Smyth was present at the event which included local public representatives and residents of the Black Valley. Minister Smyth said: “The rollout to Black Valley encapsulates the work of the National Broadband Plan and I’m very proud to be here today to see first-hand the impact that a connection to high-speed broadband will have for local residents and businesses.”

Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “The delivery of fibre broadband to the Black Valley is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. This was one of the most challenging parts of our rollout, and we are delivering it with minimum impact to the natural beauty of the region and without disruption to the Black Valley’s important tourism season.”

TWO Kerry-based busineswomen, Letitia Fealy, founder of Lotus Optimisation, and Orla Brosnan, founder of Clippity Clop Therapeutic Horse Riding and Activities, have successfully completed the ACORNS programme – a highly-successful development initiative to support early-stage female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland.

They are encouraging other women in Kerry to apply for the next cycle of the free business development programme, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

ACORNS (Accelerating the Creation Of Rural Nascent Start-ups) has been providing a decade of support for female entrepreneurship in rural Ireland and has recently launched the 10th cycle of the business development programme.

The free initiative for early-stage female entrepreneurs is funded through the Rural Innovation and Development Fund by the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine (DAFM).

“Participating in the ACORNS programme has been instrumental in driving my business forward in such a short space of time,” said Letitia. “Being in a group of ambitious entrepreneurs that celebrate your successes, share your struggles, and motivate you to believe in yourself and the value of your business, is inspiring. Having a Lead Entrepreneur that has walked the path before you, offering guidance and support is invaluable. ACORNS helps you set solid business foundations on which to grow your business. I highly recommend to anyone who wants to grow their businesses with support and accountability.”

Orla Brosnan is the founder of Clippity Clop Therapeutic Horse Riding and Activities, an inclusive pony camp based at the Tralee Equestrian Centre.

Orla studied equine science at the University of Limerick before going on the University of Arizona in the US where she studied Equine Race Track Management.

Orla says: “It has been an absolute honour to have been part of the ACORNS 9 programme. To have been surrounded with supportive and knowledgeable women who all have your back just made it an amazing six months. It is not easy to choose the route to be an entrepreneur but with the ACORNS programme it reminds you why you did choose it and that it is possible when you surround yourself with the right people. The best advice I could give anyone is, if you are thinking of applying, there is no need to think twice, just do it!”

The deadline for applications for this special 10th anniversary cycle is midnight, September 20th. There are up to 50 places available for ACORNS 10. Those wishing to receive an application form should register on the website (www.acorns.ie).

Only early-stage female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland, and who have had no sales before the end of June 2021, are eligible to apply. As ACORNS receives many more applications than there are places available, selection is on a competitive basis.

ACORNS 10 will run from October 2024 to April 2025 and will include six monthly round table sessions, a workshop on understanding financials, a briefing by various development agencies and an end-of-cycle celebration.

Tralee Chamber Makes Pre-Budget Submission To Ministers

.

TRALEE Chamber has made a pre-budget submission highlighting the ongoing and escalating challenges facing retailers and small independent businesses across Tralee and the wider North Kerry region.

The submission, to both the Minister for Finance and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, notes rising labour costs, additional employee benefits, soaring operational costs, town centre crime rates, and the importance of reinstating the 9% VAT rate for businesses as crucial issues currently facing local businesses.

The Chamber believes that the impact of these challenges is devastating to the local economy and has resulted in the closure of several retailers and independent businesses, not just in Tralee, but in town centres throughout Ireland, seeing a vast increase in town centre vacancy and dereliction which needs to be fixed.

Continued below…

.

In the submission to the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Tralee Chamber has called on the Government to commit to the following requests:

• A review and adjustment of the pace of minimum wage increases to better align with economic realities facing small businesses
• The introduction of a zero-cost policy for the first three days of statutory sick pay
• Targeted financial supports for small businesses to help manage the costs of extended parental leave and the upcoming auto-enrolment pension scheme
• Government interventions to stabilise energy and insurance costs, as well as the escalating prices of raw materials
• Reinstate the 9% VAT rate for businesses – this is crucial to ensure the survival of many businesses, the economy, and our communities
• An enhanced Garda presence in town centres

Tralee Chamber believes that should the Government commit to these requests, the local economies throughout the country will not only survive, but will see a return to thriving, vibrant town centres and communities, and urges the Government to take immediate and decisive action to address these issues.

Temporary Changes To Security Screening Of Liquids, Aerosols And Gels At Kerry Airport

.

KERRY Airport has advised that due to an EU regulatory change regarding certain security screening equipment, the following Liquids, Aerosols And Gels (LAGS) rules will come into effect at Kerry Airport from September 1, 2024.

1. Only LAGS in containers of 100ml or less can be brought through security – these can stay inside your cabin bag and there are no restrictions on the number of containers or type of LAG (provided they are not dangerous goods) – they do not have to be in a plastic bag.

2. They will accept lags in containers over 100ml but these must fall into the category of baby foods/milk, medicines or special dietary requirements – these must be presented at the screening point outside of your cabin bag but do not have to be in a plastic bag – they will be subject to additional screening after they have passed through the x-ray equipment.

Continued below…

.

3. All other LAGS in containers over 100ml, aside from point 2 above, will be rejected and you will be asked to surrender them at the screening point for disposal.

If you have LAGS that fall into the category of point 3 above then please ensure they are packed into your hold baggage or else do not bring them.

It’s important to note that the screening equipment itself, which is of a high quality, is not in question and also that the European Commission are not acting on any new threat information, but rather they are responding as a precautionary measure to a temporary technical issue that has been identified.

Kerry Airport expects to resume allowing all LAGS to remain inside cabin baggage at some stage in 2025. For more information, please visit https://KerryAirport.ie/lags-changes-explained/

TRALEE Chamber Alliance and Cara Credit Union have announced the winners of the ‘Ag Siopadóireacht le Gaelainn’ initiative, an effort to promote the Irish language among Tralee’s youth during the Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations.

The initiative saw local retailers teaming up with primary schools and aimed to embed the Irish language into the daily lives of Tralee’s young residents.

By encouraging students to use Irish when engaging with participating local shops and businesses, the initiative sought to create a vibrant, bilingual community.

Continued below…

.

To celebrate the success of this initiative, three local primary schools were awarded gift vouchers to purchase art and craft supplies. These schools demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm and commitment to using the Irish language throughout the week-long celebration.

The winners are St. John’s Parochial School, Ardfert National School and Scoil Eoin Balloonagh.

Tralee Chamber Alliance’s CEO, Colette O’ Connor, expressed pride in the community’s response to the initiative.

“A key part of this promotion is highlighting the fantastic community and collaborative spirit that is exceptionally strong here in North Kerry. Business and community come together throughout the year on a number of projects.

“For Seachtain na Gaeilge this year, we really wanted to highlight Tralee’s status as a Gaeltacht Service town. Through our Education Steering Committee Sub Group, which includes representation from MTU, Kerry College, and Cara Credit Union, we explored ways to involve the area’s fantastic primary schools with local businesses.”

Cara Credit Union, the Community Partner of Tralee Chamber, committed to fund the initiative, and it was fantastic to see local businesses and the schools across Tralee and the wider North Kerry area, including Ardfert, participate in it.”

Cara Credit Union’s Marketing Manager, Siobhán Donnelly, said: “We are thrilled to support this initiative, which not only fosters a love for the Irish language but also strengthens community ties. Congratulations to the winning schools and a heartfelt thank you to Tralee Chamber Alliance and  all participating retailers for their enthusiastic support.”

Kerry Airport CEO Calls For Airlines To Take More Slots And Fly Direct To County

.
“No caps in Kerry other than the tweed kind” is the message from Kerry Airport CEO John Mulhern.

MANAGEMENT at Kerry Airport are inviting airlines to make use of available slots in Farranfore to help ease the pressure at Dublin Airport where a passenger cap is currently in place.

The Airport facilitated transatlantic aircraft under similar circumstances in 2023 and CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern said it would be a most suitable option again with the twice daily flights between Kerry and Dublin being extremely popular with passengers.

Kerry Airport is connected to three other major European cities – London and Manchester in the UK and Frankfurt in Germany – and it is capable of servicing the additional passengers, aircraft and crew.

Continued below…

.

Passenger numbers for 2024 are on course to match the record levels recorded in 2023 when 419,281 people passed through the Airport.

CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said; “Kerry Airport is an important strategic asset to County Kerry and the wider Munster region in strengthening transportation links both nationally and internationally. In excess of 25% of jobs in Kerry are directly dependent on the tourism and hospitality sectors and many more in business because of our airport connectivity. There are no ‘caps’ in Kerry other than the tweed kind.”

“Kerry Airport facilitates vibrant regional commerce, enables the movement of workers, drives business innovation and investment, and is of particular importance to many of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy based in Kerry. You can do business in Kerry, case in point Astellas Pharma, who recently commenced construction of a €330m facility generating 300 construction jobs and 100 highly specialised roles in engineering, science and technology.”

“I don’t agree with those who suggest that most visitors only want to fly directly to Dublin for tourism. In fact, many tell us they would prefer to fly directly to Kerry and statistics from Tourism Ireland and others demonstrate that very significant proportions of overseas visitors choose Kerry for their vacation. The emergence of the Wild Atlantic Way as a destination in itself has successfully attracted great numbers of visitors to this part of the country.”

“In this era of excessive urban growth, isn’t it time to shift the flow of people a little? I don’t have to fly to Dublin to visit Kerry, I can fly to Kerry to visit Dublin.”

Meanwhile, the Tender process is underway with work on an expansion project at Kerry Airport projected to begin later this year and be completed for the Summer of 2025.

All going to plan, it will involve increasing the size of the Departures Lounge, adding additional customer facilities, and developing a purpose-built Arrivals Hall which will include the necessary facilities for customs and immigration.  For more information on the airport visit www.kerryairport.ie.

Kerry Men Helping Expand The Junior Entrepreneur Programme Into China

.
Tom Cooper, PYP coordinator at Xiamen International School, pictured with his wife Fang and children Maureen and Danny. Maureen participated in the JEP pilot at the school this year.

THE Junior Entrepreneur Programme, founded by  Kerry businessman Jerry Kennelly, has made its first foray into China and two Kerry men are spearheading its expansion.

A new pilot programme was launched in the city of Xiamen in Fujian province earlier this year, and the first 85 JEP entrepreneurs have created their businesses.

It all started when Paul McCarthy, a teacher at Xiamen International School, began searching for an entrepreneurship and life skills development programme for his students last Autumn.

Continued below…

.

Paul has been teaching in international schools in different cities in China since 2015. He currently teaches Middle School (ages 11 – 15) at Xiamen International School. Xiamen is located on the South East coast of China. It is home to the first free trade zone established in China.

Marie Lynch and Vicky Landers of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme with Paul McCarthy at Xiamen International School. Paul accepted the Bright Spark Award on behalf of one of his students.

Paul had run the Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) at home in Kerry and felt something similar would be ideal for his class. “I was a primary principal in Lauragh, a small, rural 2-teacher school in South Kerry, from 2011 – 2015 and took part in JEP before I moved to China. The children greatly enjoyed it and learned a huge amount.”

“I felt that this type of programme, with a focus on collaboration and life skills, would fit very well with the ethos of Xiamen International  School. A high percentage of parents are business people, and I was confident they would appreciate the introduction of entrepreneurship skills at an early age.”

To his surprise, he could not find a programme comparable to JEP. “From my experience in an American International School, a British International School, and now an independent International Baccalaureate School, I haven’t encountered anything similar to JEP in the international community. Various countries have different initiatives but none of them bring together all of the elements in such a neat way.”

Paul contacted the Junior Entrepreneur Programme office to ask if they would consider allowing him to participate, and before long he and his class were up and running.

The pilot was a great success and culminated with one of Paul’s students winning the JEP Bright Spark Award.

Chen Jia (Jana) won the award for her idea, the PLA converter, which could convert used plastic into 3D printing material. The Bright Spark is the only award presented to an individual student.

Jana is looking forward to her trophy presentation when the school re-opens in mid-August. “I learned many lessons from this experience”, she said.  “The main thing is that things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. The sense of success came from a place other than making money. It came from the pride of being able to organise everything.”

Paul is not the only Kerry native working at the school. Tom Cooper, from Ballymacelligott, was the Primary Years Programme Coordinator at Xiamen IB School this year, and responsible for leading the implementation of the primary years curriculum.

Tom, his wife Fang, and their two children, Maureen and Danny, regularly visit Kerry. Maureen was a member of the class that completed JEP in Xiamen this year.

Another Irish staff member, James Gleeson from Midleton, Co. Cork, the IT and Communications Coordinator, has been based at XIS for five years and was heavily involved in the delivery of JEP.

According to Paul, there is a significant Irish community teaching in various institutions in China. ”The Irish education system holds up very well to international comparison. Irish teachers have an excellent reputation in China and around the world and are in high demand,” he added.
