The ‘Jester To The Kingdom’ Crowned At Toastmasters Event

.
Sonia Elston, event organiser, Anthony Garvey, Jester of the Kingdom and Zach Garvey, Anthony’s eldest son.

THERE were 23 humorous poets taking the stage in Tralee on Friday night to battle for the coveted title of ‘Jester of the Kingdom’.

The popular humorous verse competition, now in its fourth year, was held at Kerins O’ Rahillys GAA club, in front of a large, appreciative audience.

Organiser Sonia Elston, said she was delighted with the turnout and the number of humorous poems entered in the competition, both of which were at record levels for the event.

“Our Judges Noel King, Derry Butler and Vicky McCarthy had their work cut out to shortlist the entries, which ranged from humorous poetry and narrative stories told in verse, to downright doggerel!  We were transported across the world, from tigers in Africa and bullfrogs in America, to the inside of a Peugeot, and front row seats at a fictional wake for Eddie Dunne, to name but a few.”

After much deliberation the judges decided in 4th place was Anne Marie Kennedy, with an autobiographical piece called ‘Full Circle’, in 3rd place was John McGrath, with his poem entitled ‘Fair Day in Castleisland’.

In 2nd place was ‘Love is an awful curse’, by Mike Guerin from Newcastlewest.  Local Tralee author, Anthony Garvey emerged victorious with his poem entitled: ‘Sight for Sore Eyes’, which took a humorous look at his experience undergoing successful corrective surgery for a congenital squint.

“As a proud Dublin man, living and working in Tralee, it’s a great honour to win the Jester of the Kingdom,” Garvey said on receiving the award.  “It will have pride of place on my mantelpiece for many years to come.”

The Kerry Person of the Year award, which began in 1979 is now in its 41st year and recognises an individual who has shown leadership, brought honour to the county, and performed services for the county to such an extent that could be described as being beyond the norm of everyday life. Previous winners include literary legends John B. Keane and Brendan Kennelly, as well as sporting heroes  Mick O’Dwyer, Páidí Ó Sé and Colm Cooper. The Laochra Chiarraí award recognises a group for exemplary leadership in community activity.

Nominations for both awards are now being accepted through the online forms on the Kerry Association website at www.kerryassociation.ie, and the deadline for all nominations is Sunday, December 1st 2019. The awards will be presented at the Kerry Association in Dublin’s annual dinner, Oiche Chiarraí, on Saturday, March 28th 2020 at the Red Cow Moran Hotel, Dublin.

The Kerry Association in Dublin dates back to 1951 and was established as a way to celebrate the people, culture and, most importantly, the sporting achievements of Kerry people and to bind together the “emigrants” of Kerry who have made Dublin their home.

Kerry Mountain Rescue members Mike Slattery, Gerry Christie and Dermot Reen presented with a cheque by Keelin Kissane, Chairperson of Kerry Association in Dublin.

IT Tralee Open Day And Parents Information Evening

.

IN anticipation of CAO applications opening in November, IT Tralee will host its annual Parents Information Evening and Open Day to assist students and their families as they consider college options for September 2020.

On Thursday 24th October at 7pm IT Tralee will be joined by Psychotherapist, Media Contributor and Bestselling author, Stella O’Malley who will host a session on the best way to support children through the Leaving Certificate and prepare for the transition to third level education.

Also on the evening, IT Tralee Admissions experts will be available to give practical advice on making a CAO application and accessing student support services.

Commenting on the upcoming event Bríd McElligott, Vice President Research, Development and External Engagement at the Institute said; “This annual information evening has become a staple event at IT Tralee in response to the growing number of queries from parents and family members regarding the move from second to third level, and the opportunities and challenges this presents for the students concerned. We are delighted to have Stella O’Malley join us on the evening given her vast experience in this area.”

The following day, on Friday 25th of October, the Institute will welcome potential students and their families to its annual Open Day.

This ever-popular event will be held from 9.30am to 1.30pm at IT Tralee’s North Campus and will attract over 1,000 potential students from across the county and beyond.

Current IT Tralee students will lead this year’s campus tours, which will include a guided walkthrough the newly opened Kerry Sports Academy.”

Tailored workshops will also be delivered for mature students and students with learning difference.

Both events are free of charge and open to the public. Booking is requested for the Parents Information Evening. Please call 066 7191704 or email mary.reid@staff.ittralee.ie
