THE town is some sight this evening.

There was a fantastic family-friendly atmosphere in The Square this evening as the Christmas lights were switched on.

Brian Hurley was MC for the event which saw thousands fill The Square to dance and enjoy the festivities.

On 5pm, Mayor of Tralee, Jim Finucane and Brian McMahon from Ballyvelly switched on the lights to the cheers of the crowd.

The streets of the town were lit up and great credit is due to all concerned for making the town look spectacular for the festive season. We took photos of some of the streets. Scroll down for photos…

Christmas party season kicked off in spectacular style as Padraig McGillicuddy went full PT Barnum to welcome guests to ‘The Greatest Showman’ themed evening.

Over 340 guests at the sold-out event were greeted by a fire-baton twirling performer, before entering the Pavilion to enjoy jazz music and a glass of mulled wine or bubbly.

A FESTIVAL of literacy and fun was held in Presentation Secondary Tralee this past week as students and staff enjoyed their annual Love Literature Week.

A homage to all things literature-related, students were blown away by mesmerising and stimulating speakers and workshops. ‘The Fresh Film Festival’ with talented film-maker Mike Vanmealdon was a huge success with staff and students enthralled by a wonderful set of short films.

Moyvane maestro and celebrated Kerry treasure, Gabriel Fitzmaurice read a collection of his poetry to first years.

Another hugely successful event was the “Older and Bolder” gathering – a melting pot of Tralee’s senior citizens who regaled students with tales of their lives.

The school community visited The Rose Hotel on Wednesday to meet with motivational speaker and author Gary Cunningham of ‘I am enough’ fame.

Literacy table quizzes, treasure hunts, poetry, short story and aminations competitions were held throughout the week.

Fiesty females Elsa and Anna entertained 1st year and TY students at the Pres premiere of “Frozen 2” and a magical afternoon was had by all.

As is now tradition, the week concluded with a Gala Fashion parade as staff and students strutted their stuff dressed as characters for a whole myriad of literacy tales. Scroll down for photos…

THE KDYS was packed with hampers, vouchers and great prizes on Friday night, as the doors opened for this year’s St John’s Parish Bazaar.

It’s been part of the pre-Christmas schedule for years now and for the 68th year there’s the usual array of hampers, vouchers, art work, crafts and loads more amazing prizes to be won and auctioned off during the weekend, which raises tens of thousands of euro for the parish.

Eddie Barrett was acting as auctioneer when we called on Friday night, while Brendan O’Brien was proving an able MC calling out the winners to the raffles and keeping the crowd entertained.

The door prize on Saturday night is two nights B&B in The Gleneagle Killarney and Sunday’s door prize is a 32″ smart TV.

The proceeds will go towards the annual upkeep of three churches within St John’s Parish (Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rathass, St Brendan’s, Curraheen and St John’s Church in Castle Street).

Well done to all the businesses who donated prizes and to the public who helped fill those hampers. You can head down tonight at 7pm and Sunday at 2.30pm and all are welcome. Scroll down for photos…

THEY had a lot to compete with, what with the Late Late Toy Show being on, but they held their own in The Ballymac Bar on Friday night for a fundraising table quiz.

Coláiste Gleann Lí held their annual quiz at the Boherbee pub to raise funds for the school and local charity Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

They had about 12 tables on the night and some questions in round one were in which state is Yosemite National Park? How many All-Ireland medals does Stephen Cluxton have and who is Sheldon’s girlfriend in The Big Bang Theory?

No bother to them! There were spot prizes donated by local businesses and Mary Fitzgerald of Comfort For Chemo Kerry and John Creagh of the Ballymac Bar/Coláiste Gleann Lí expressed their thanks to prize sponsors and all who attended. Scroll down for photos…
