RACE NIGHT: Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic situation, last Friday’s Race Night had to be postponed. A new date will be fixed in due course..

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Now it’s just days away from an occasion which both Clubs haven’t witnessed in over 85 years.

It was on the 18th October 1936 when both sides last met in a Co. Championship Final. We won that Final by 0-6 to 0-4.

It was our 5th title after wins in 1928, 1930, 1931 and 1932. And look at the connection on that 1936 team and the current team.

On that 1936 team were the Doyle brothers, John Paul and Miko. John Paul was her father and Miko her uncle. We are referring to Angela Stephenson (nee Doyle) – mother-in-law of today’s outstanding player, Kieran Donaghy.

Come on to the present and look at the connections between both teams. Start with our Club Secretary, Elma Nix (McMahon) wife of Tom Nix who, with his brother Morgan, played with Rahillys.

Then we have Sarah Hoare who plays with our Lady SF team, a sister of Tom Hoare, the Rahillys midfielder, both grandchildren of Denis Dee Butcher O’Regan.

Conor O’Sullivan’s father, Timmy played with the Rock when he was very young and with Strand Road at Senior level and of course Conor’s grandfather, Denis was a Rahillys and Kerry stalwart in the sixties and seventies.

His mother is Gráinne Power, a Rock woman through and through. Ross O’Callaghan (KOR) is a cousin of our own Shane O’Callaghan and they could be marking one another on Sunday. And that’s just the connections that we are aware of – there could be more.

And as we are on football let us send congratulations and best wishes to Club Footballer, Brendan O’Sullivan and his new bride, Ciara who got married last Saturday.

SUPPORTERS CLUB: Kevin O’Carroll informs us that Supporters will gather from noon at the Club Grounds and will march from 1.15pm down the Rock and up through town in time to welcome our heroes on to the field from our Terrace location. All are welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS: from everyone in the Senior section of the Club to Melissa Whyte, daughter of Josh and Dell, on her recent election as Chairperson of the Ladies Club.

FITNESS CLASSES: The Individual Pod Fitness Training sessions continues in the Clubhouse every Tuesday and Thursday evenings  from 7pm to 8pm. All are welcome. Contact Diane at 087 7940531for further information.

DECEMBER IN THE PAST (01/12 to 07/12). On the field of play our C team won their 3rd Co. Championship title (The Barrett Cup) in a row on 4th Dec 2004, defeating Ardfert in the final by 1-9 to 1-5 in Caherslee. Team: Darren Carey, John Slattery, Kevin Barry, Alan Tobin (Capt), Kenneth Leahy, Daniel Bohan (0-2), Danny Carroll (Snr), Chris Kerins (0-1), Garrett Clifford, David Conway, Martin Courtney 0-1), Joey O’Connor (0-4 – three frees), Anthony Moriarty 1-0), Tommy O’Connor (0-1), Peter Williams. Subs: Alain Creagh (12m), Graham O’Connell (55m).

Off the field three great Rock men were elected Club Chairmen during the first week of December in the past – Jim Naughton in 1996, George Dineen in 1998 and Denny Long in 2000.

Also on 5thDec. 1997 Pa Laide won an All Star Award after a brilliant season with Kerry during that year helping them to win the All Ireland Final that year after an eleven years drought..

CLUB LOTTO: Monday Night’s (29th Nov) Jackpot, worth €3,350, was not won. The numbers drawn were 4, 12, 21, 23. The €20 winners were Noreen Power, c/o The Club; Siobhán Cushen, c/o OnLine; Denise Relihan, c/o The Burger Shack; and Oliver Healy and Ian O’Shea, both c/o Carmel O’Neill.

U13 Boys
Well done to our u13 Boys who on Sunday  captured the Division 2 Tralee/St Brendan’s District League title with a 2-7 to 1-7 victory over Ardfert after extra time.

Match Report
Our u13 Boys team capped a fantastic Season for them when they won their third trophy of the Year on Sunday last in Ballyrickard with an extra time replay victory over Ardfert in Division 2 of the Tralee/St Brendan’s District League.

Underfoot conditions were heavy which didn’t help matters so great credit must go to both teams for contributing to a most exciting game.

Ardfert had the advantage of the stiff breeze in the first half and led at the break 0-4 to 0-1.

Ballymac played their best football of the day early in the second half and led 1-7 to 0-5 entering the last ten minutes and seemed set for victory, however Ardfert had other ideas and their relentless pressure paid off as they added 1-2 in time remaining to force extra time.

Both sides were tired after the exertions of the normal time so any score in extra time would be critical, Ballymac struck for a goal late in the second half of extra time to snatch victory to see them run out winners on a 2-7 to 1-7 scoreline.

Captains John Leen, Tommy Walsh and Michael Quirke accepted the trophy on behalf of the team from Chairman of the Board John Rice.

Credit is due to both teams for giving us two marvellous games. Both going to extra time with only one score between them at the end of the day.

Team: John Leen, Tommy Walsh, Darragh McMahon, Fionn Enright, Cian Gilroy, Jackson Brosnan, Conor McCarthy,Padraig Reidy, Eoghan Joy ,Jack Collins, Michael Quirke, Liam Rahilly, Graham West, Jamie Tarrant, Sean Martin, Conor Lynch, Ryan Burke, Shane Cassidy, Cathal Carr  and Seadhna O’Brien.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

Munster Junior Club Championship

Parnells 0-8

Skeheenarinky 1-22

Our seniors represented Kerry in the Munster Junior quarter final last Saturday in Austin Stacks Park.

Even though our lads had finished their season a number of weeks ago the club took on the challenge against a Tipperary side fresh off a county win and backboned by intercounty footballer Conor Sweeney.

The loss and unavailability of some usual starters created an opening for Graham Sheehy to make his senior debut.

The opening quarter saw last ditch defending from Parnells including a top class save from the ever improving veteran Mark Ryall. Some nice scores came from the usual Darragh Reen and Geraoid Doherty leaving us a single point behind. But for some narrow wides we could have gone in front.

The Tipp lads owned the start of the second quarter scoring consistently including a well won goal from a high ball into the square. Parnells, already depleted from some usual defenders, lost Luke Barrett through injury after he took two heavy knocks and was replaced by Niall Cassidy.

However, then came our best spell with some top class team scores from captain Doc (Gearoid O Doherty) and a skillful individual effort from Graham Sheehy. Half time Parnells trailed 0-7 to 1.11

The second half opened with the Tipp lads getting some easier scores from some unfortunate errors. It could have been worse only for another top class save from Ryall and a goalmouth scramble where the two Tadhgs, Reen and Brick somehow managed to clear the lines.

Parnells introduced a number of subs and came close to scoring a goal whilst at the other end young Tadgh Reen held up Sweeny from getting through for another. Whilst it was a comprehensive beating there were nevertheless positives.

It was good to see Pip Gilsenen and Paul Daly who have given so much to hurling get this rare opportunity. There was some excellent play from many including the hard working high fielding Cathal Dunne, Tadhg Brick, Gearoid Doherty. It was good to see Darragh Keane make his senior comeback and it was good that the club rose to the challenge.

We wish Skeheenarinky every good wish going forward.

Foireann; Mark Ryall, Tim Kelliher, Tadhg Brick, Luke Chester, Tadhg Reen, Brian Lonergan, Luke Barrett, Cathal Dunne, Ciaran Breen, Graham Sheehy (0-1), Gearoid O Doherty (0-5, 3f), Andrew Morrissey, Ronan Gilsenan, Darragh Reen (0-2), Cillian O Riordan

Subs Used; Niall Cassidy for Luke Chester, Paul Daly for Ronan Gilsenan, Daire Keane for Darragh Reen, Johnathon Lowe for Tim Kelliher, Stephen Morrissey for Cillian O Riordan

Healthy Club
We recently received the good news that the club will retain it’s GAA Healthy Club status. Congratulations to Caroline Somers our Health & Wellbeing Officer and those who helped out during the year on this great achievement. The Healthy Club award recognises clubs who support positive physical and mental health among their members and the local community.

Facilities
Thank you to everyone who helped in any way with club facilities during the 2021 season; the volunteers who prepared and stewarded Caherslee for home matches and the Friday academy; those who assembled and stored the juvenile goals and organised the storage container.

A special thanks to Agnes Sheehy who regularly went above and beyond to ensure that on-field activities went off safely and smoothly. Finally, thank you to groundskeeper, Joe Wallace, for his flexibility and patience, and for ensuring that the pitches at Caherslee were in top condition throughout the season. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

Social Hurling
Boys from U9 to 15s are welcome to meet up on Saturday mornings at the astro picth at the MTU Sports academy for an hour of social hurling.  This is an opportunity for the boys to keep up their practise during the off season.  Games will be supervised and whoever is available can just turn up that morning.  U9 to U11s meet at 9am, U12 to U15s meet at 10am.

Ballymac Merlin Works His Magic To Win €30,000 Irish St Leger

.
Ballymac Merlin, winner of the 2021 Matchbook Irish St.Leger Final at Limerick Greyhound Stadium for Liam Dowling Ballymac Kennels in a time of 29.68 with Paul Geasley of Matchbook Betting Exchange & Shane Dowling of Ballymac Kennels.

A DOG trained by Liam Dowling was the winner of the the Matchbook Betting Exchange Irish St. Leger at Limerick Greyhound Stadium on Saturday night .

Despite heading into the decider as the 8/1 outsider, it was Ballymac Merlin who produced a phenomenal performance to hand Liam Dowling a second St. Leger triumph in three years.

At the outset, 96 greyhounds went into the hat hoping to land what is one of the most prestigious prizes in greyhound racing.

Continued below…

.

Liam Dowling won the Irish St. Leger in 2019 with Ballymac Anton and it was the Kerry handler who was destined to take back the title in 2021 as Ballymac Merlin, a son of Vulturi and Ballymac Belle, displayed pure grit and determination to see off Deerjet Sydney by three parts of a length at the winning line.

The joint 8/1 outsider of the field, Ballymac Merlin has just the four career wins to his name from twenty-two starts but he produced a sensational display on the night that mattered and after stopping the clock in 29.68, he is the Matchbook Betting Exchange Irish St. Leger champion for 2021, taking home the €30,000 first prize.

News Update:

MKL Gaels

Another fantastic day for the MKL Ladies Senior Side as they performed incredibly against Cloney-Quin of Co Clare to go through to the Munster Junior A Football Final.

On a momentous day at Paddy Burke Memorial Park the action started with a win in the intermediate semi final for Castleisland Desmonds over Galtee Rovers St Pecauns of Tipperary. Best wishes to the Desmonds ladies in the final.

The second game of the afternoon saw local ladies team MKL Gaels face Cloney Quin of Co Clare and after a blistering performance the MKL Ladies went on to win the game with the final score MKL Gaels 6:10 Clooney-Quin 1:04.

There was incredible support for the MKL Seniors on the day and we want to wish them all the very best in the Munster Final on what will be another historic day for the club.

Thank you sincerely to all of the many volunteers who helped on the day to make the day so successful and enjoyable for all. There were in excess of 30 volunteers throughout the day, thank you to each of you for your help. Thank you also to the supporters of the teams in action for their support of our club lotto and shop and to the Munster LGFA also.

The year has not finished but we are looking towards the new one and hoping to create a team at our club for Operation Transformation in January. At the moment we are looking for anyone interested in helping to organise our clubs OT efforts? Please contact Danny on 087 653 6631 if you are interested.

County Championship Final

Wishing the very best to coaches who worked together at our Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club Wayne Quillinan and William Harmon who are going head to head next weekend for Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the County Championship Final.  Best of luck to both teams on what will no doubt be a fitting occasion to finish off this year’s championship.

Wayne was Senior Manager of our club winning the 2014 Mid Kerry Championship along with William and Senior Manager David Heasman who were selectors for the team. William of course played for Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club from juvenile to Senior Level winning many honours with the club. Best of luck again to both with their respective teams next weekend.

Congratulations to the U15 team who were victorious in the Mid Kerry Shield Final winning by a score of 3-06 to 0-05 against Glenbeigh/Glencar – Cromane.

It was a fantastic end to the year and much deserved for this hard working team. Well done every member of the panel who all drove each other on throughout the year and showed great team spirit all throughout.

Thank you also to the fantastic coaching team Turlough, John, Laurence, James & Sean for all of their hard work.

Captain Tristan Jasinski received the Shield and  Man of the Match award was Aaron Dinham, well done to them both and all of their teammates.

We would like to pay special thanks to Alan O’Connor and his team at Almas Takeaway for providing the food after today’s final for the team and for their support on many occasions throughout the year.

We would like to thank our Coiste na nÓg sponsors Foleys Spar, Milltown for their continued support in their 4th year supporting the youngest members of our club and also for sponsoring our brand new social area.

A sincere thank you to the many volunteers and supporters who helped throughout the year covid supervising, taking photos, sending reports, bringing food to events and for being so supportive of the team.

Thank you to our Coiste na nÓg`chairman Ollie Kirwan and Secretary Joan O’Shea all their support in their first year in their roles and we look forward to a full football year for 2022.

This time last year we were facing uncertain times, it ended up that we didn’t have football until the month of May but we were overjoyed to see the juvenile members of our club take the field again and hopefully we will be able to hit the ground running in 2022. Thank you to each and every club member for making 2021 as special as possible for our young footballers.

Senior County Championship Final

All roads lead to Austin Stacks Park next Sunday afternoon where our senior team meet local rivals Austin Stacks in this years decider.

The game promises to be a titanic battle with both teams having impressive semi final victories.

The final will once again see us enter as underdogs with the majority of observers giving the nod to the men from Rock Street, this however will not bother Will Harmon and his management team, as we have been underdogs in all our championship fixtures this season so far.

The is a huge buzz of excitement in the club over the last few weeks with our supporters young and old getting behind the team.

The support that we had in the semi final victory over Dr Crokes was outstanding and this will be needed again next Sunday.

The game throws in at 3pm, and we wish the team and management all the best for this fantastic occasion.

The game is an all ticket affair, supporters are advised to purchase tickets online as early as possible as this will be a sell out.

JUVENILE NOTES

Adrian Doody.

We bid farewell to our juvenile chairman Adrian Doody who has served us so well over the past 5 years.

Adrian, described by many as a gent, took on the role of juvenile chairman in 2017.

He has helped bring  our juvenile section of the club to where it is now. Adrian treated everyone with respect and hopes that parents and children alike benefited greatly from being involved in our terrific club.

Adrian always put our girls and boys as NUMBER 1. He showed no favouritism ever and each child and family were treated equally regardless of their circumstances or background.

Community meant a lot to Adrian and he organised many events during his term as chairman.

Pre Covid we all enjoyed the Christmas, Halloween, Family Open Fun Days etc. During lockdown he kept the show on the road keeping everyone active and had raffles and online competitions for our youngsters and even for the Moms in our club .

After all “The GAA is a community based volunteer organisation promoting Gaelic Games, culture and lifelong participation.”

He also organised the Donal Walsh Livelife Invitational Tournament which we only enjoyed for two years so far because of Covid. Looking forward to it again in 2022 and meeting up with Elma and Fionnbar.

A proud day for our club in 2019 was the raising of the ‘Amber Flag’ . We were the first club in the county to do so.

The amber flag acknowledges our work with mental fitness within our club and community. We might not realise it but somewhere in all of our families, some one may be affected by a loved one who has mental health problems.

Adrian has done trojan work within our club and we thank him for this. Well done on a tremendous job. You can hold your head high !

In a historic week for the club he feels particularly proud of the part that he and the juvenile coaches have  played in building a strong juvenile club as that’s the foundation for days like next Sunday.

Adrian also thanked the great coaches and admin who put in so much time and effort over the last five years…only for them we would not have a juvenile club.

Adrian knew each child by name and had a brilliant way about him. He was extremely dedicated to his role and was a doer.

He loved meeting people and chatting on Sunday mornings and of course telling everyone to help themselves to a cuppa and a bite to eat.

Many hours were spent at home in the evenings organising Sunday mornings. Not a day went by but he was working on his much loved juvenile academy.

Adrian will be no stranger to Strand Road. He is staying on the senior executive and word has it that not one but two age groups in our club are trying to rope him in to help out with their teams!

Adrian sent out a message to everyone offering hid sincere thanks to the children and to the parents for their amazing commitment and support over this time.

He stated that our juvenile club is thriving and without the parents, children and volunteers  this would just not be possible.

He said that it has  been an honour and privilege for him to work with so many wonderful children and their families in the best club in the county.

Adrian is looking forward to seeing you all at the county senior final Sunday week. Let’s get all our support behind the Blues he said!

Thank you so much everyone, he was overwhelmed with the beautiful text messages he received.

Best wishes to Rob Lacey who has stepped into Adrian’s shoes as the new juvenile chairman.
