IT’S been a long wait, but students who sat their exams in Tralee schools back in June finally received their Leaving Certificate results on Friday morning.

While the results can be accessed online and mailed out to students, some schools in town invited them in to meet with former classmates and discuss the results.

At CBS The Green, one student was celebrating top marks, achieving 725 points. Denis  Brosnan from Ballymac received seven H1s and was understandably delighted with his results.

“I was nervous this morning as you never know really, but I had put in the work so I thought I did well. Seven H1s was more than I expected though!” said Denis, who plans on studying Finance at UCC.

“He deserved it,” said his proud mother, Doris Blackwell. “He worked extremely hard and it paid off. He’s very grateful to all his teachers and the staff at CBS The Green who helped him along the way,” said Doris.

Principal of CBS The Green, Anne O’Callaghan, congratulated Denis and all the students on their results.

“He’s an outstanding young man, it’s the first time we’ve had a student receiving 725 points at the school. We had a number of students with over 600 points and they deserve it,” said Ms O’Callaghan who wished all the students well in their quest for third-level places.

It was the final time students gathered at the Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí in Moyderwell to receive their results (their new school near UHK will be ready well before next year’s Leaving Cert).

Students met up and were greeted by some teaching staff and Príomhoide Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, Ruairí Ó Cinnéide.

“We are delighted with the results achieved by this year’s Leaving Certificate students at and we congratulate them on their success,” said Mr Ó Cinnéide.

“Following a challenging final two years to their second level education, it is great to see their hard work rewarded with such exceptional results.  Overall the students and their families are extremely happy with their achievements and we are extremely proud of all our students.

“Notably over 70% of the students in Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí achieved over 400 points, while three students achieved the maximum 625 points,” he added.

Over at Presentation Secondary School, Principal, Chrissie Kelly, congratulated the students and wished the well for the future.

“Considering the two years the girls have put down, they showed tremendous resilience and received excellent results,” she said.

“Many achieved better results than they thought they would. Everyone who has come in to us is exceptionally happy today, which is testament to the hard work they put in. We’re extremely proud of all the students,” added the Principal.

Over in Mercy Mounthawk, a large crowd of students came to the school to meet up and discuss their results. Principal John O’Roarke was effusive in his praise for the students and the work they put in over the years.

“We’re very pleased with this year’s results. The students acquitted themselves very well under conditions that were difficult for them over the past few years. We had a number of students who achieved 625 points,” he said.

“I hope that when the offers of places come out on September 8 that all students get their chosen course. However, I want to remind students that there are numerous pathways to their destination and that is something they need to remember as they await offers of college places,” added Mr O’Roarke. Status Yellow Rainfall Warning Issued By Met Éireann

.

A STATUS Yellow Rain warning for Ireland has been issued by Met Éireann.

Met Éireann say high rainfall amounts this weekend may cause disruption with the warning valid from 9pm on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday.

Looking more locally, tonight is looking to be a wet one in Kerry with heavy showers. It’ll clear up in the morning for a while, but it’ll be a showery Saturday afternoon and evening.

Those heavy showers will continue overnight but should clear to make for a dry and pleasant afternoon before the rain returns that night.

Billy Ryle: Celebrate The Results But Keep An Eye On What Happens Next

.

Billy Ryle says Kerry’s 2022 Leaving Cert Class can celebrate superb results but must also keep a close eye on a fast-moving timeline…

RESULTS ARE OUT

The long wait for 61,107 Leaving Cert candidates (58,056 LC Established & 3,051 LC Applied), including 2,009 candidates from Kerry (1,902 LC Established & 107 LC Applied) finally ended at 10am today when results were issued by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) directly to candidates through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP) at www.examinations.ie. Leaving Cert results were also available in candidates’ schools at 10am.

POST MARKING ADJUSTMENT

Following a ‘linear adjustment’ to ensure that the 2022 Leaving Cert results would be no lower than last year’s exceptional results, this year’s results are on par with the 2021 results.

After the marking of exam scripts, results in 2022 were lower than in 2021 right across the board. In order to raise the results to the 2021 level, additional marks were added to all exam scores on a gradually reducing scale from 11% at the bottom to 2.7% at the top of the scale.

Continued below…

.

No marks were adjusted downward. Of the 410,161 grades awarded in the traditional Leaving Cert, 50.5% increased by one gradeand 49.5% remained unchanged.

In the final analysis, the overall results this year are at the very high grades levels of 2021. For example, 14.3% of grades were at H1 level in 2021. This year its 14.4%.

CELEBRATE

The outstanding results are likely to keep CAO points at last year’s high level, but that’s an issue for next Thursday.

Today is a day for celebrating the achievement. Considering the hardship endured by the 2022 Leaving Cert cohort, they have done themselves and the country proud!

SUPERB

Leaving Cert results in Kerry are superb. Offers of third level college places will pour into the region when Round One is issued by the CAO at 2pm next Thursday, 8th Sept.

It looks as if Kerry’s CAO applicants will be top of the class in securing college places. More than 70% of Kerry’s Leaving Cert candidates are likely to progress to higher education. A further 20% will secure places in Further Education, Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

Continued below…

.

DEFERRED SITTING

For a number of reasons, the Leaving Cert results were issued late this year. There was a deferred sitting of the Leaving Cert exam in July for students unable to sit exams in June due to serious accident, injury or illness, close family bereavement or Covid-19.

A total of 397 candidates sat the deferred exam, having missed out in June – 270 due to Covid, 43 due to a bereavement and 84 due to serious illness. More examiners were also needed and the SEC found it difficult to recruit a sufficient number of examiners this year.

COMMITMENT

The Government also gave a commitment that the 2022 Leaving Cert exam results would be, on aggregate, no lower than the 2021 results.

The SEC said that this extra time was needed to ensure that the results were adjusted accordingly. The Government has fulfilled this commitment but the consequences for CAO applicants won’t be known until next Thursday.

TIMELINE

Because of the late exam results, this year’s timelines for candidates to apply to view scripts and to lodge their appeal applications are very tight and moving faster than sprinter Israel Olatunde.

The SEC maintains that these timelines are essential to ensure that the remaining stages of the appeal process can be completed as quickly as possible.

I sincerely hope that the appeal results will be issued in time for candidates, who benefit from a CAO offer as a result of an upgrade, to take up the offer this year rather than having to defer it until 2023.

MARKS

Candidates can see their marks, including marks for each subject component on the CSSP from 12.00 on Tuesday, 6th September.

Candidates can apply on the CSSP to view their scripts online from 17.00 on Tues, 6th Sept. until 20.00 on Wed., 7th Sept. It’s well worth viewing your marked scripts before deciding to appeal any subject(s) results.

VIEWING SCRIPTS

Both scripts marked manually and scripts marked online will be available to candidates for viewing.

In the case of the former, each candidate will be assigned one of three sessions on Sat., 10th Sept. Session One is from 9.00 to 11.00, Session Two is from 12.00 to 14.00 and Session Three takes place from 15.00 to 17.00.

Online access to view scripts that were marked online will also be available from 9.00 on Sat., 10thSept. to 12.00 on Sunday, 11th September.

GRADES APPEAL

Any candidate who wishes to submit an appeal application against an awarded grade – commonly called ‘applying for a recheck’ – can do so on the CSSP between 9.00 on Sat., 10thSept. and 12.00 on Mon., 12th Sept.

Until such time as the number of appeals is known, the SEC won’t commit to a specific date for publishing the appeal results.

CAO DATA

Latest CAO data confirms a final figure of 83,803 applicants, down slightly from 84,526 in 2021. 2,505 applicants have applied to CAO from County Kerry. That’s a 3% increase on the 2021 figure of 2,424.

The blue riband courses are again in high demand and will require high points to secure a course offer. However, with over 50,000 places on offer this year, applicants can be very hopeful of a college offer.

CAO ROUND ONE

To date, 11,345 offers have been issued by CAO in Round A and Round Zero to 9,256 special category applicants.

For all other successful applicants, Round One, the main round of offers, will be available online on 8th September at 14.00 and successful applicants will also receive offer notification by email and text message.

You can only accept one offer, in any round of offers, from either the Level 8 List (Honours Bachelor Degree) or the Level 7/6 List (Ordinary Bachelor Degree/Higher Certificate).

You may accept a Round One offer online until 15.00 on Wednesday, 14th September. An offer automatically lapses unless you accept it on time. Round Two offers will be available online at 10.00 on 19th September.

The very best of luck to all candidates getting Leaving Cert results on Friday.
