Ballymac GAA v Rathmore GAA – Minor – Club Championship A Shield Final

Ballymac GAA 1-16 (19)

Rathmore GAA 4-13 (25)

Our Minor team played Rathmore GAA in the Final of the Club Championship A shield on a cloudy evening in Fossa GAA pitch last Monday Evening, July 22nd.

In the first half, both teams went at it in a frantic, high paced game. It was an even affair for much of the opening period with both sides exchanging scores. Ballymac went into a 3 point lead initially and had early dominance of the first 15 minutes with the breeze. Rathmore, with their first meaningful attack, slotted away a goal which brought them right back into the mix.

Ballymac 0-08 Rathmore 1-06

In the second period, Ballymac brought it back level with a nice score from Michael Quirke. However, it was Rathmore who, especially at the centre of the field became dominant which provided the platform for their eventual victory.

Rathmore went on to bag 3 further goals to really impose their advantage. Our lads kept battling to the end but in the end to no avail with the Rathmore men running out the victors by 6 points.

This group of young men have been a credit to the club so far this season and, despite a disappointing defeat for both players and mentors, they can hold their heads up high with a bright future for themselves and the club overall.

We would like to wish all those from the club taking part in the St Kierans minors panel all the very best in the upcoming county minor championship.

Seniors:

There are times when winning is not about elegance and precision but rather about grit, determination and experience.

Experience was the key factor tonight,  bringing as it did a deep understanding of what was needed to win, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and the mental toughness to push on and not panic when the game was there to be won.

We lined out as selected on the match programme with Laune Rangers making four changes to their original selection and having won the toss, playing with the breeze in the first half.

They adopted a defensive set up from the get go, often having up to 12 players defending, keeping two up front at all times.

In the first half we were sometimes sluggish, sometimes ponderous and found it hard to break down the massed defence – Rangers for their part, dictated a lot of the play with Eoin Clifford, Eoin O’Sullivan at midfield and John Burke dangerous – the result was that we trailed by 3 points at the break, 0-06 to 0-03, our 3 scores all coming from play from Tomás Kennedy (2) and Gearóid Dillane.

We twice struck the post with fisted efforts but it was Laune who would have been the happier at half time following good scores from Eogan Hassett (3), John Burke (2) and Eoin O’Sullivan who had opened the scoring from play.

The 2nd half saw Laune extend their advantage again through Eoghan Hassett but Tommy had us back to a 3 point deficit before David split the posts from long range in the 5th minute.

Laune again hit back but then Tommy, now much more influential, won a long ball and laid it off to the inrushing Barry John who billowed the net from close range. It was now game on and when Tomás Kennedy fired over from a free we led for the first time.

The introduction of Cormac Coffey on 12 minutes was vital as he showed he had lost none of his skills when he made ground before slotting a lovely score to leave us two ahead with 12 minutes remaining.

Laune then hit back with 3 rapid points to go one ahead before Cormac, again found the target to leave the scores level 1-08 to 0-11 with only 4 minutes remaining.

Laune again took the lead with a score from play from sub John Tyther but then came the decisive moment when we attacked down the middle, Tommy again winning the ball before parting to Tom Hoare who  played a captain’s part as he found the bottom corner of the net low to his right.

The clock ticked to 30 minutes when Eoin Clifford pointed to reduce the deficit to the minimum but the kickout was ours through David and following a good bout of interpassing BJ pointed off his left guaranteeing us the win.

There were still a couple of minutes to play but Laune failed to hit the target and the kickout brought out the best in Tomás who soared high to win us a vital possession and though we fell short with the effort at a point, it was enough to garner the win.

This was a real championship encounter, but it was in the big moments that our experience shone through. We dug deep, drawing on all our years of training and competing at the highest level and found a way to grind out the victory.

Every man deserves great credit for getting us over the line from Rob in goal who made two great saves, our defensive sextet who were tested time and again, our midfield duo of David & Tom who wrestled back control in the second half and our attacking unit who never stood back and kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Commiserations to Laune Rangers who left with nothing to show for their efforts but there are 2 big games remaining and they will still have a big say in what two teams emerge from this group.

Final score:

KO’R 2-09

LR     0-13

Team: Rob O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Donagh Buckley, Ben Hanafin, Jake Foley, Daniel Bowler, David Moran (0-01), Tom Hoare (1-0), Gearóid Dillane ( 0-01), Shane McElligott, Barry John Keane ( 1-01), Gearóid Savage, Tommy Walsh ( 0-01), Tomás Kennedy ( 0-03).

Subs: Cormac Coffey ( 0-02), Ryan Carroll, Con Barrett.

Round 2:

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

Tralee Parnells Minor squad who defeated St Brendans in the quarter final of the County Championship

Minor Hurling
Parnells minors took on St Brendan’s in Ardfert last Thursday evening in the 1/4 Final of the Co Championship. Having been beaten in the Co League final the previous week, the boys were looking to bounce back quickly.

They got off to a slow start however and St Brendan’s raced in to a 1-1 to no score lead thanks to a goal from midfielder Eoin Flaherty. Parnells started to come into the game with points from Dan Maloney and Fionan Ryan and the steady free taking of Eoghan Costello edged them ahead. However another goal by Flaherty where he breezed through the Parnells defence to smash the ball to the net had the teams level at half time Parnells 0-10 St Brendan’s 2-4.

The second half started with both sides sharing points but Parnells gradually started to get on top. Liam O’Connell, now positioned at the edge of the square, was impeded as he made his way towards goal and Costello raised a green flag with the resultant penalty.

St Brendan’s were always dangerous and Cian Harris in the Parnells goal had to be sharp when Flaherty went for goal from a close in free. Brody Leen scored from the 65. There  was still only 2 points in it with time almost up when a Parnells sideline cut was floated in which deceived the Brendan’s keeper and eventually ended up in the net.

John Ross blew the final whistle soon after and Parnells had just done enough to progress to the semifinal. Final score: Tralee Parnells 2-14 St. Brendan’s 2-9.  A good result but Parnells know more will be required to get to a Co Championship final.

Tralee Parnells U11s with their coaches Ollie Broughton and Finbar Canty after an enjoyable day of hurling at the Gaelic Grounds

Our U-11 boys had a busy week last week.  On Wednesday evening the boys had a fantastic game against an excellent Rathmore team at home Caherslee. Both teams put on a superb display of hurling. Thank you to Donnacha Buttimer for refereeing the match.

The team then traveled to the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Friday to play three matches against Tubber of Clare, Doon and Na Piarsaigh of Limerick. The lads played three tremendous games with the quality of passing, tackling, striking and score getting worthy of the Munster championship venue. A massive thank you to all the parents who traveled to Limerick to support the boys.

U9 Hurling

U17 Boys: Unfortunately our u17 lads went down to St. Michaels Foilmore/Skellig Rangers in the Club Championship Shield final in Cromane last Monday.

Senior Men: Last Saturday night our Senior men took on Milltown/Castlemaine in Round 1 of the Senior Club Championship in Austin Stack Park. The first half was evenly contested with never more than 2 points between the sides.

The pick of the scores was a neat point from Dan Goggin following a slick move involving Diarmuid O’Connor, Andrew Barry and Enda O’Connor. Jack Bourke was very much to the fore in that first half helping himself to 3 points, one from a mark.

A point each from Dara Devine, the impressive Kieran O’Connor and Oisin O’Brien kept the scoreboard ticking over but it was wind-assisted Milltown/Castlemaine who went in at halftime ahead by 10 points to 8.

A swift start to the second half by our lads led to a pointed free from Dara Devine and another mark from Jack Bourke to level the match. A pointed free from Milltown/Castlemaine was cancelled out by another point from Jack Bourke from play.

Neither team managed a score for the next 8 minutes until Jack Doyle kicked a great score to put Na Gaeil ahead for only the second time in the game. The game was in the balance at this stage and the next few minutes were probably where the game was lost.

In the space of 5 minutes our lads twice went for goal when maybe a point was the better option. We also kicked an effort into the Milltown/Castlemaine keeper’s hands. Eventually two frees and a point from play by Dara Devine were matched by 4 from our opponents to leave the sides level after 29 minutes.

Milltown/Castlemaine got the next point to edge ahead once more with the game in injury time. From the kickout Diarmuid O’Connor drove at the Milltown/Castlemaine defence and shot from 40m out.

It looked to be the equaliser but the umpire waved it wide. Again our lads won the kickout and gained a 45m free. Diarmuid O’Connor stepped up to take it only for the ball to come back off the upright and the referee blew the final whistle.

Despite the loss it was a great display by our lads considering how depleted our team was on the night.

Next Saturday the lads will be away to Dingle in Round 2. Final score: Na Gaeil 0-15, Milltown/Castlemaine 0-16. Team: Jack Rodgers, Ryan O’Neill, Damien Bourke, Seán Barrett, Oisín O’Brien, Andrew Barry, Jack Doyle, Diarmuid O’Connor, Enda O’Connor, Peter Doyle, Kieran O’Connor, Kieran O’Donovan, Jack Bourke, Dara Devine, Dan Goggin. Subs: John Kearney, Mark Lynch, Kevin O’Donoghue, Oisín O’Sullivan, Liam Óg Kingston, Seamus Looney, Shane Kelly, Shawn Duggan, Rory Reen, Aaron Dewey, Shane Daly, Tadhg Reen, Fergal Barry.

Two minutes later a wonderful free flowing move involving Caroline Harrington, Ellie O’ Rahilly and Simi Ogungsbesan ended with Grace Hamilton blasting the ball to the Glenflesk net from the 21 metre line.

Niamh Myers added 3 pointed frees and when she added a goal in the tenth minute, the large home crowd were in dreamland pushing the girls in Green and Gold an amazing 10 points clear.  Glenflesk responded with a wonderful goal from Niamh Cantillon who was then denied by a wonderful save by John Mitchels goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins, before Ava Buckley kicked a delightful point for John Mitchels following good approach play by Aoife O’Brien and Shannon Martin in the fifteenth minute.

Niamh Myers added her fourth and her first from play two minutes later and then Diana O’Keeffe burst forward from the back to kick an amazing point off he left foot.  Glenflesk responded with their second goal from their midfielder Keelie O’Connor and added a quick point from Eabha Rudden to cut the deficit to just 6 points but John Mitchels added points from Shauna Hannafin and a beautiful long-range effort from Grace Hamilton to leave the half time score John Mitchels 2-09 Glenflesk 2-01.

John Mitchels began the second half in the same manner as they started the game and scored 3 points, one each from Ava Buckley, Sarah Kilgallen and Niamh Myers to open up an eleven point advantage.

Glenflesk responded with a goal from Abby Cronin and points from Caitlyn Kelly and Niamh Cantillon to reduce the gap to six points by the tenth minute.

Any thoughts they harboured for a comeback, however, were dashed by some resolute defending by Tanya O’Connor who put in an exhibition of blocking, Tara Fitzgerald who excelled in her new role at full back and Erica O’Connor.  Ava Buckley added a further 2 points from play and when John Mitchels introduced, Anna Murphy, Linda O’Connor, Abigail O’Shea, Eabha Mullins and Nicole Hennig for her Senior debut, the changes led to further points by Ava Buckley and Shauna Hannafin and a fantastic goal from Niamh Myers.

While Glenflesk never gave up and responded with a goal from Abby Cronin, it was the home side that had the final say when Ava Buckley scored a wonderful goal from a fine passing movement.

Final Score John Mitchels 4-15 Glenflesk 4-03.

What was again very encouraging was that we fielded 20 players for the fixture and gave yet another of our underage players their Senior debut and also the large crowd that came out to support the team on the night.

The club is without doubt going from strength to strength and this is very encouraging for all involved. John Mitchels now face league leaders Killarney Legion next Monday night, July 29th at home and hopefully a big crowd will come out again to support the squad in this very important fixture which may consolidate their divisional status for 2024. We look forward to seeing you all.

Barrett will wear the number 24 shirt for Kerry FC for the remainder of this season.

Speaking on his announcement as a Kerry FC player, Cian Barrett said; “I’m delighted to be back and looking forward to getting started. I had a couple of options closer to home but everyone at Kerry was brilliant with me last season and I really enjoyed my time here. So I felt if I was going out to the first division to get games I wanted to show them the same loyalty they showed me. I can’t wait to meet everyone in Mounthawk Park again and get a big push on for the remainder of the season”

Also speaking to kerryfc.com following the announcement, First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy said “It’s great to have Cian back for the rest of the season. He was a fan favourite here last season and did really well for us. Since he’s gone back to Rovers he’s also been doing well with plenty of appearances in the Presidents Cup and several League games as well. I was chatting to him this morning and he’s excited to get back to Kerry and is mad to get going. He enjoys the club here, the environment, the fans so is buzzing to get back to the Kingdom. He will be a big addition to us now until the end of the season”.
